What a story about your stepmother. To lose both parents at such a young age and to find her own mother dead after suicide is horrible. You need to be very tough to handle those things. Thanks for telling us this story and how you learned to appreciate music from all over the world. I was hoping that this song would be your cup of tea. It's the type of spiritual music that touches your soul. The song itself can be interpreted as a metaphor for the obstacles (the mountain) that stand between us and our loved ones and the hardships we go through to be with them. The title was online translated as "The Mountain approached", but maybe we have some Bulgarians here who can tell if this is the correct translation.

The correct translation is The mountain collapsed. This is a song sung at funerals by female mourners. The soul through the song understands, that the body is dead and must leave it. The song talks about the power of a mother's love. And the sad truth that no one in this world will love you more than your mother loves you.😉

Well, the meaning is 'the Mountain has closed its paths' so She doesn't allow them to save themselves and reach their families. One has a mother the other has bride that are waiting for them. Not Arabic though much much older anyway

This is a song writen for Hristo Prodanov he was Bulgarian mountaineer. He was the first Bulgarian to climb mount Everest in 1984 doing it via the most difficult way-the West Ridge-as well as alone and without oxygen. He died on his way back to base camp. The original song is by Stefka Sabotinova.

Wrong. This is a folklore song from West Thrace. Stefka Sabatinova learned it from her grandmother and it was in her repertoire.

No, it’s not. The song is traditional centuries old Thracian song.

Bro, Prodanov died on Everest 50+ years ago. This song has nothing to do with him! This song is old as f*ck. The mentioned mountain is not Everest :)

I am Bulgarian and I credit my extensive love for our folk music for my ability to connect with and deeply appreciate Middle Eastern and North African music. Even though it's different you're right that there are some similarities that provide a connection. Something makes it feel familiar on another level. If you want to hear another amazing song but accompanied by traditional instruments and one of the greatest Bulgarian vocalists, check out Oi, Yano by Nadka Karadjova. It'll have the red album cover with the people on it and a woman in front holding a red flower. You'll also hear a traditional double flute in it - dvoyanka.

Greek-Bulgarian here. Musically, the song has a lot more to do with Asian than with African folk sound, be it Northern or otherwise. Think Tibetan sounds, throat singing and so on. Even south-east Asian ancient music is closer related to Bulgarian folk sound and especially our usage of scales, than anything else, even Greek.

This is a Bulgarian song made for the honor of the climber Hristo Prodanov who died on returning from the mount Everest after he conquered the top without oxygen tanks...may he rest in peace !!! MAGNIFICENT SONG !!! You should whatch the original version which is made by Stefka Sabotinova...there is also a voice moments of which they called him on the radio...telling him to stay awake...and that the help is comming... its such a sad story ...when i liscen to this song my soul and my body trembles...

Someone already mentioned that this is NOT Stefka's song. She only made it popular, that is all (and not without the help of foreign music producers and record labels, which put Sabotinova on the map). The song precedes the birth of Stefka Sabotinova and is not about Hristo Prodanov. The then regime in Bulgaria had no interest in promoting the Bulgarian music to the West, let alone invest money in professional recordings. We have yet to see the full cycle of Vladigerov's concertos recorded in modern times, by Bulgarian artists. And those are big. Prokofiev big.

This is bulgarian folklore song from Thrace and it's not written for Hristo Prodanov!

Nope, she is not. I was wondering about the same because the pronunciation is really good, near perfect, but then she is pronouncing soft L in planinata, which is only a thing in several Bulgarian words, but not in this one. In almost every word the "l" is hard. She does the opoosite the word Любе(liube) with firm L. I google them. She is of Serbian and Hungarian descent.
