Lewis gets the asteroid Ceres confused with the dwarf plant Eris. But generally what he's saying about there being tons of big bodies zipping around the solar system is mostly accurate. A special kind of accurate called yoggcurate.
@AstroPsych_
@AstroPsych_ 8 жыл бұрын
Even then, Eris probably isn't bigger than Pluto. While Eris's diameter is fairly precisely known (2326km), Pluto's is only known to be somewhere between 2300km and 2400km. That means that there's roughly a 75% chance that, among Eris, Pluto, and Simon, Pluto is the biggest dwarf. And, even if Eris is the biggest, it's only by a maximum of 26km, hardly half the size of a mid-sized city.

er, is it ok if I assume you're not joking? space is huge, it would take you 100,000 years to go across the milky way alone, let alone intergalactic spaces. the space-time continuum, right now, consists of, I think about 14-15 billion years, massive, right? it is. and it is a lot of time for massive galaxies to develop, tons of stars to be born, die, and give birth to other stars. any one galaxy consists of trillions of stars. sorry, if you were kidding, I don't mean to be a know-it-all, but i'm just saying, space is far more massive than anyone will ever comprehend before tearing your sanity to pieces in seconds.

+Vol7ar Eris and Pluto are almost exactly the same size. Eris's diameter is confirmed at 2326km, and Pluto's is only known to be somewhere between 2300km and 2400km. That means that it's more than likely that Pluto is actually slightly _bigger_ than Eris, and even if Eris is bigger, it's only by an amount roughly equal to half the size of a small city. Hardly enough to be consider "way bigger than Pluto."

hmmm, the civ channel had to change its URL... Likely a legal reason, but why now...? I'm calling it, Civ VI is going to be announced soon (E3?) and 2K (or whoever) wanted the /Civilization youtube url.

When people talk about spiral galaxy, they're probably thinking of a proper relatively uniformly circular spiral galaxy. This is probably why Lewis is making a distinction by saying it "isn't much of a spiral galaxy." It's like a barred galaxy with little bits dragging behind, which is the spiral part.

The Milky Way is classed as a Barred Spiral Galaxy, the most common form of Galaxy. It's got a straight Bar in the middle, believed to act as a star Nursery. The Milky Way was originally believed to only have two arms, but was somewhat recently discovered to have four.

If anything in this game was to scale, the game would be unplayable, considering that the sun is more than 1,000,000 times the volume of Earth and makes up more than 99% of the mass of the solar system. So that's not a valid reason not to include Pluto in the game silly goose.

Did Lewis just said the Milky Way isn't a spiral galaxy?
@kanders7391
@kanders7391 8 жыл бұрын
He was close actually, its a disk-shaped barred-spiral galaxy. Spiral galaxies have a lot more arms than Barred spiral. The truth is apparently not well known.
@kanders7391
@kanders7391 8 жыл бұрын
Wiki: "The Milky Way is a large disk-shaped barred-spiral galaxy. A majority of spiral galaxies, including our own Milky Way galaxy, have a linear, bar-shaped band of stars that extends outward to either side of the core, then merges into the spiral arm structure." So take away two of those spiral arms at 8:07 and make the two remaining ones fatter, and that is what it really looks like. Sort of an exaggerated S. Other fun facts: Most galaxies in the Universe are dwarf galaxies, about a hundredth the size of the Milkyway. Many dwarf galaxies may orbit a single larger galaxy; the Milky Way has at least a dozen dwarf galaxy satellites. Our Solar System is located in the Orion Arm, 26,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way.
