A live recording of Elliott playing one of his rarest songs "You make it seem like nothing" also known as come to me, as far as I know there's only 2 live recordings of this song this one from around 96 and one I'll upload later this week from a show in 2003

Did this man ever write a bad song? This one really touches the heart. So beautiful, and so sincere. And ended with his usual humble "thanks." No, thank YOU, Elliott.

I feel the same way! I've been listening to him since 97 and this is the first time I've heard this song. I like to come in to You Tube and read all of the comments from many who still listen and love his music and it makes me happy, even though I always feel like I'm the only one who knows about him among my friends and people I encounter daily.

For anyone trying to learn this song in the way Elliott played it, his guitar has a capo on the first fret and then both E's are then tuned down a whole step. The chords are C, G, F, C; D-, A-, F but you'll need to alter the top and bottom strings to get the right voicings. For the fingerpicking pattern, I made a video that may help you get the gist of it, if anyone cares: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnvNl2V7YtWWjbM

im sick of the talk of how depressing and sad it all is. this song fills me with elated, euphoric joy. i think we can agree the music transcends a certain definition. it may comfort while sad, but comfort is a good thing. but you dont have to tell yourself that you must be sad to listen to this... its soothing and can inspire hope because we all can relate to the broodings and sadness spoken of, but in a light of joy its possible to see these things...

This song (like many of Elliott's songs) affects everyone differently... for me the lyric that really stood out was "I can't help you when you're sad, that's a constant source of pain to me, because I want to really bad, even though you make it seem like nothing"... this is exactly what I am going through, she broke up with me, but she is equally sad about the breakup as I am... I'm trying to tell her all will be ok, and that we will be happy one day, but I don't even know this myself... whatever happens to me, I hope one day she can be happy again

I’m always just reminded that he was brilliant and very tortured and he didn’t make it. Dunno how anybody sees much hopefulness there. It just beautifully verbalizes how a very depressed person feels, also addiction, codependency, etc but nothing happy. The man was miserable and he fought it and was a genius but in the end he lost. How’s that bode for us who relate to him? I find it all sad, but his music is so beautiful and he is such a genius, and I unfortunately relate in every regard, so that’s why I love his music. But I don’t get how it makes people feel good. You must be in a better place in life than me, lol.
@thmyon2452
@thmyon2452 6 ай бұрын
@@christiangasior4244 Makes you feel good in the same way when someone really understands what you’re going through. Moreso than words can articulate. It’s hopeful in the way that you aren’t alone, and yeah, he didn’t make it, but you don’t need to be the same person to understand what they feel. You can feel the same way as he did, you could feel worse, but that doesn’t mean that you must succumb to it. Shit’s hard, but if it wasn’t a challenge, what fun would it be?

it always frustrates me when people characterize elliott’s work as the saddest of the sad, pure depression. sure, his music is VERY sad very often, but his music also has so much hope and joy and softness in it. when i started listening to him i was surprised by the amount of sweetness and love i found in his music. while i do listen to him while i cry, i can also put on elliott smith and smile harder than ever. his story is truly heartbreaking, and he has made so many beautifully somber tunes, but he was more than that!

His song "Somebody That I Used to Know" came on while I was searching for a different song while I was thinking deeply on my past and the things that happened, and that one time I didn't specify the creator of the title was how I found Elliot Smith's music. Now I've been binging each song I come across, and I wish I could've said thanks to this man. It's been helpful to listen. Thanks, Elliot. Hopefully, I'll see you on the other side.

I've listened to this song many times over the past few years, but this one time, it is hitting far harder than it ever has... especially that second verse... I couldn't help her when she was sad, and that will be a constant source of pain to me, probably for many years to come, maybe for the rest of my life... the last time I talked with her, all the light had left her dark green vibrant eyes, I'd never seen her like this before, and she said she couldn't bear the pain of being without me even for just a moment (it was a distance relationship)... she cut off all contact with me, I just hope she is ok, I hope she hasn't come to any harm

I've listened to this song so many times and I hadn't realized it but I was interpreting the song differently than I should have I always felt like my ex treated our breakup like it was nothing and I realize now that she never hated me and she wasn't lying when she said she missed me. We broke up because she felt bad that I was alone so much and we didn't get to spend enough time together. I told her I was alone a lot of the time anyway. I was the one that made it seem like nothing.

I really like that the music doesn't drown out the lyrics. He makes it all about the lyrics, not like most artists now that just seem to drown their words like oreos in milk or keep repeating the same thing over and over to horny beats. lol

@StelliosHolmes I remember reading something about when Elliott released Roman Candle his girlfriend at the time was plugging the album to all of her friends who said it was awful boring repetitive and then she gave it to them again after they had broken up with someone and they were saying how he was the next dylan and how poetic it was and they'd never heard anything like it people are a funny breed they don't know what's good for them until they need it......

I'm not used to coming through More accustomed to a falling out I'm trying hard now as I can for you Not to fuck up on some stupid doubt You've got your hopes set way up high Way on up there where the air is thin The limit's supposed to be the sky I'm trying not to let you down again It's starting to come to me I didn't know about hadn't figured it out But it's starting to come to me now A little bit too late I can't see anything you've done Any reason for the trouble you've got You haven't hurt anyone - Compared to most that's saying quite a lot I can't help you when you're sad That's a constant source of pain to me Because I want to really bad Even though you make it seem like nothing It's starting to come to me I didn't know about i hadn't figured it out But it's starting to come to me now A little bit too late

I love discovering these rare songs left behind by Elliott. After listening to most all of his discography a hundred times over, hearing these special live songs feels so fresh and new, almost as if he's still writing somewhere out there. I love playing your songs on guitar Elliott, they feel so true and honest.
