Step 3 to RESET Your Metabolism to Burn Fat (Reduce Glycogen)

Step three to reset your metabolism to burn fat for fuel is to deplete your glycogen (stored glucose) stores.
Once glycogen levels are chronically lowered, the body can then turn to it's fat stores (and dietary fat) to metabolize for fuel. When this begins to occur, ketones begin to accumulate in the blood stream, which is a metabolic state known as ketosis.
Ketosis brings upon many health benefits, especially for the brain.
This is the third of four steps to reset your metabolism away from sugar dependency to fat burning from a more in-depth video explaining all 4 steps and why burning fat for fuel can be profoundly beneficial for the brain.

Am I right in saying people looking to burn fat need to try avoid carbs so they can burn fat in their workouts?
@JoshPerryBMX
@JoshPerryBMX Жыл бұрын
Great question. It's about burning fat beyond just a workout. Carb restriction is also one pice of the puzzle. Workouts improve strength, cardiovascular and overall health, as well as aid in burning fat due to using up glycogen stores and utilizing energy in general. Carb restriction helps support the glycogen efforts overall throughout the day, but it's all context on the persons goals, age, activity, diseases risk factors, etc.

Q about rice. I guess the best approach if you are going to eat it - would be to weigh it out dry. So 100g of Basmati dry would have apx 32 g of carbs.
@JoshPerryBMX
@JoshPerryBMX Ай бұрын
from my understanding, you can calculate it cooked or dry in macro / calorie tracking apps. I use Chronometer and it allows you to pick dry or cooked.

Hi Josh. What does resetting your metabolism means? Can you link to some studys on the topics you mentions?
@JoshPerryBMX
@JoshPerryBMX 2 жыл бұрын
In short, we are not meant to just metabolism glucose for fuel. We are considered "dual fueled", meaning we can metabolize fat and sugar to create ATP (cellular energy). Today's society primarily runs on sugar and we have seen a lot of damage occur from this over the last few decades. Resetting out metabolism, as described in this video and others on this topic, is to get back to the "dual fuel" energy production of metabolism. Here is a great article citing multiple studies to check out on fat metabolism, fat adaptation, etc. drinklmnt.com/blogs/health/4-ways-to-become-fat-adapted-and-why-its-different-than-ketosis

@@JoshPerryBMX no studys in the link you just send me. You mention duel fuel. Do you have some litterature on the subject, from a non bias source? And some studys on the subject of sugar being a cause of todays problems, best with some RTC studys, so calories are equated.

Is glycogen basically water weight?
@JoshPerryBMX

glyocgen is stored form of glucose / energy. Each gram of glycogen stored in the body is bound to 3 or 4 grams of water.

I am unaware of an exogenous form of glycogen specifically. Carbohydrates breakdown to glucose and then get stored as glycogen in the muscle and liver tissue.

50 grams of carbs for example, looks like 5 bowls of rice. It’s a lot
@JoshPerryBMX
@JoshPerryBMX 6 ай бұрын
It’s actually not that much. You can use a food scale to weigh out the food source in grams and plug it into an app like Chronometer to see how many carbs a food source is. 1/4 cup of oats is about 22g of carbs if I recall correctly. 1 TBSP of honey is 14g of carbs.
@JoshPerryBMX
@JoshPerryBMX 6 ай бұрын
5 bowls of rice is an arbitrary example that could be 200-500g of carbs or it could be 50g if there’s like a heaping spoon full in each of the 5 bowls. 1 cup of cooked rice is about 45g carbs.
