One of the first 'rock' songs I learned on electric guitar in 1965 - I was 13 yo - Jr. High garage band! Still a go-to campfire song, minus arthritis, of course... and there's 'Louie, Louie'; 'Seventh Son'; 'Hang on Sloopy'; 'Wild Thing'; LoL. Thanks, Lauren, for the memories 😊

Great tutorial! Thank you! I'm a 66 year old beginner and I'm working on this song and the F chord, sometimes I can do it and that makes me happy. I have very small hands, my baby finger is only 1 3/4" long, I didn't think it was possible when I started but with practice it's happening, YAY!

It's amazing how our bodies adapt to whatever we're doing repetitively. When I first tried to play with a guitar strap standing up, I thought there was no way. But I just kept doing it and one day it seemed quite natural. I'm 62 BTW.

I love your teaching method and that you strive to make it fun. You make it possible for me at 59 to learn to play guitar. P.S. I am going to park my strat as soon as my new Yamaha LL16 RLHB arrives from Sweetwater. You inspired me to play accoustic and learn finger picking, too!. Thanks for doing what you do on youbute.

Many of us no doubt have had that experience of being at some party or another in our formative youth and having to put up with that person who would deign to pick up the random acoustic sitting in the corner and inevitably start rather crudely strumming that achingly familiar chord progression. Props once again for breaking down and articulating the essential applications of nuance and feel to a dare I say, deceptively simple song.

@@LaurenBateman I learned that song from a local guitar teacher. He taught to strum the cords as a repeated sequence and when I thought I had it down in a 4/4 beat he refused to play it with me at a party because he said I had it wrong. What happened is he failed to mention the arpeggio and the 6/4 timing. Turns out he was like most guitar teachers I have seen that want to show off their abilities but don't know how to teach. Sounds familiar anybody? Thanks Lauren your a refreshing exception.

Great introductory lesson to this song! Something I would like to suggest is because the timing is everything with is piece, what would you recommend a beginner set the metronome rate at? I have tried everything from 60 - 240 with the timing at 6/8 and still can't quite get it. Years ago I did play this song flawlessly but time has taken a toll. Thanks

Thanks so much! One great exercise that I do with students is to have them set the metronome for 10BPM higher than their maximum speed. You can learn more about this concept on this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqPWnombhM5lfqM

Nice tutorial Lauren. Speaking of F barre chord, do professional guitar players from time to time still unintentionally muting and strings with their F barre chords?

Lauren... Dylan did this tune on his 1st album.... never sang this song again after recorded by the animals.. Dave Vonronk did this tune many times in the village which caused a big riff between Dylan * Vonronk

Lauren, on the D chord, after starting with the open D, go back up over the D string and start the rake with the D and it will flow like the rest of the chords.

@@LaurenBateman I learned to play on a guitar with a real skinny neck when I was already 19, so I could always do the thumb wrap around thing for the low F. 🙂

the F chord arpeggio starting at about 4:06, it's tabbed incorrectly on screen as a 3 on the G string when it should be a 2. just thought you should know.
