Jared T we just bought our first lil 3 bedroom ranch house close to the beach. Beautiful area but I’m gonna have a lot of improvements to make b4 I can exhale and relax. And since hubby is a truck driver and only home weekends, I’m stuck doing it all myself..So I have to do a lot of learning.

This a good video for HOMEOWNERS to get good results. This vid is not for professionals... professionals have more skills, but it begs the question, why are pros looking at "how to" videos? LOL! An average homeowner DOES need to use tape. An average homeowner is not going to be using five gallon buckets of paint with a grid for their painting project. An average homeowner doesn't need five gallons of one color... Let's keep things in perspective and remember the POV. Good video Andy!

Andy, thank you so much for showing us how to paint a room. You were very detailed oriented and explained it really well. Also, I have to say this is the best painting step by step video I have seen on KZbin so far. My husband and I are definitely excited to paint our house this weekend!

Oh my goodness I’ve watched a bunch of “how to paint” videos but I’ve learned the most from yours. Thank u so much. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. I’m a small 5’ tall woman and need to paint my entire house all by myself, every room. And I’ve only really painted once before, about 10 yrs ago and I made so many mistakes. And yes I didn’t put the lid back on the can and I ended up tipping the paint can over, got blue paint all over my Livingroom carpet coz of course I only covered the area I was painting and not the adjoining room and the can was right by the door. I can’t tell u how long it took me to get out all of that paint. Most of it did come up but the carpet in that area was ruined and I wasted so much time. This time, I’m older, wiser, not as impatient and I’m doing my homework. If nothing else, I am covering every inch of my house in thick plastic, doubled, just in case. I can not afford to ruin the nice new carpet in the house I just bought. Your video is truly what I needed. So many great tips. Truly I am thankful

This is my first time painting myself and all the little hacks and tricks of blending and running the roller fast has really helped me. When I painted earlier without any instructions it was just so messy with all different shades of paint. Then I decided to take a break and watch a video which happened to be this one and then I finished painting one side of the room in just 15 minutes and it looks awesome. Thanks for the nice video

Thank you Andy, great explanation. I could say is one of the best I've heard in You Tube, when it comes to painting. You say what we should not do and why we should not do it, with some examples. To get the best edge is to lay the tape down and then use a small bead of caulk on the edge of the tape to stop the bleeding. Being sure that you knock down the caulk really tight, just enough to seal the edge of the tape. You'll get a perfect edge that not even the best of painters can get by hand.

i have to say as a painter i rarely use tape, if you're good enough at your job you should be able to cut in without any problem. In the even you slip up a damp rag will solve any slip up.

Well i do this for a living, and found that this is good for beginers trial and error with the tape, but for a buisness it is way slow, can you imagine getting a contract for 3-4 newly built houses that need painting in under 1 week & you use tape! my advice is, use the right size brush for your job your on and preferably a horse hair brush. Also generally the more you spend on a roller the better feel and overall quality you will acheiv.

I have watched this video with some interest to see how Andy's techniques would be at all useful for someone who has never painted before. Reading some comments seem pretty harsh. There are many things a professional painter wouldnt do as Andy has done, but for someone with no experience, some tips may be of some use. 1. A professional would never use tape. It just gets in the way, and no matter how well you think you have taped an edge, there is always a tendency for the tape to bleed giving you a messy line. However, from a distance, (if taped well) this messy line can be hard to distinguish. The result would more than likely be a much better outcome than some people who have tried to cut a line with no tape (i.e. for the inexperienced). 2. The goal of rolling a wall is to get a nice even coat. Hence the V shape as Andy suggests. As a professional this is certainly not a technique that we would use (particularly when he had to reload to get back to the corner). I understand that this technique may be benefit someone with no experience so aid them in not flooding an area and leaving others skimp. (it just takes a lot longer, thats all) 3. I cant stress enough: the only complete criticism i have with this video, is that he 'wipes' his brush out on his roller tray to load it evenly? Firstly, use a pot for your brush so it limits the chance of it drying out. Secondly, you do have to load the brush evenly. You can do this by working the bristles into the paint to 'swell' the brush so it literally cant hold any more paint and then scrape it out on the side of your pot. This pre-loads the bristles. You should then only have to dip the tips of the bristles into the pot to load up, and your ready for painting. All this should take about 1min, and you only have to do this the first time when you get out your brush. My best advice is though: Please dont go out and get a two dollar brush and roller kit from the local hardware store. For most of you, you are about to do something you dont usually do and you dont need any further stress added in. You dont need a top of the range brush which a professional might use, but you can get a good quality synthetic brush nowadays for about $10-$15 and it will get you through more than satisfactorily. It will save you a lot of heartache. Also opt for a mid range roller (the type will obviously vary depending on what you want to do), as the very cheap rollers tend to lose a lot of fibres when rolling. If anybody wants any further advice, just post a message and i will try and help. My experience as a painter is 18 years in the trade with workskills awards and a Master Builders Association (Australia) Crafstman of the Year Award. So hopefully I know what I'm doing :)

My big question is weather it will matter if I brush my edges and let it dry before rolling will that look worse than if I didn't wait for it to dry? The idea being that I want to split the tasks into two days.

If you use paint tape with Behr, be sure to wait until it's completely dry or cut it with a blade when you go to remove it to avoid tears!
