This is an awesome breakdown! My wife recently stepped on my daughters Sandisk Clip. I got a replacement for her but I’m considering trying to open the broken one and replacing the LCD for myself. Curious your thoughts on if that’d be worth the effort and if you have suggestions on where to source parts. Thanks!

I've swapped clip lcd's before between a bricked unit I had on hand and one that had a shattered screen. It's not particularly difficult if you have some experience with surface mount soldering. As for where you can source a replacement part, I'd start with looking at the back of the lcd for a model number to google. I honestly don't know off the top of my head if it's a custom part or off the shelf that would be easy to find a replacement for.

Hi, I saw your youtube vid about swapping out the uSD card on a Sandisk Clip Sport+. My daughter's Clip has developed a couple faulty sectors on the 117MB hidden partition and will no longer boot. Could you share a copy of your backup image so I can fix this up please?

INCORRECT disassembly. Use a heat gun carefully to remove the clear lens, exposing 4 screws, then the top control will come off. Two more screws removes the whole circuit board.

just bought one of these. wow, upgrade the storage to however big a sd card i want? any other upgrades anyone can think of like the screen or a better clip? is bluetooth connectors upgradable, so it can use aptx or ldac? sure its still low quality as opposed to hi res, but for $60, i wish i had one of these instead of 5 ipods back in the day. wander how much we can pimp out these lil guys, to make them more competitive to "advanced technology"

I'm looking for a reliable simple mp3 with an insanely long battery life and a massive storage capacity. Do you think we can mod these Sansa players with a large battery?

Yep, I added a 1000mAh battery to my old clip+ and I easily get 40+ hours of runtime.

It's a 32gb file, so not really sure how to share without deleting half my cloud storage (and it'd take a long time to upload/download). I can try compressing it but that may not help much.

Try using a 512 GB memory card. I did that with my SanDisk Sport Clip in the external card slot. It works fine. Now I can listen to 27,500 320 Kbps .MP3s. With over 149 GBs free space on the card for more music.

If you decompile and reverse engineer the firmware yes that's possible but probably not the easiest thing to do.

Do you think it is possible to add an antenna to this so you can listen to radio with Bluetooth instead of having to use wired headones?
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 2 жыл бұрын
I don't see any physical reason why this shouldn't work, but the software might lock out bluetooth automatically when the radio is turned on so you may have to modify the software to disable this.

Lol I did something similar to an older clip+ I had with a busted clip, but I glued a 1000mAh battery to the back where the clip went. The thing could run forever on a fully charged battery (I ran rockbox battery tests and it easily ran for over 50-60 hours).

I've got a 16GB version of the Sansa Clip Sport Plus and it won't connect to my BT 5 earbuds. It works fine with an older BT4 headset. I see that the 32GB firmware page has some BT code that isn't on the 16GB page. Has anyone tried putting this BT code on a 16GB device - either as is or upgraded as in the video (nice work, btw).
@steverussell1215
@steverussell1215 2 жыл бұрын
I upgraded to 64GB following these instructions and installed the 32GB firmware and the 32GB BT firmware. Works fine except BT gives an error and won't turn on. Reinstalling the 16GB firmware restores the BT function. Then I discovered that just putting the 32GB firmware on breaks the BT, so a bit of a disappointment as it seems the 32GB firmware is needed for the larger card size to work properly (as reported below).

Great job! But here's a radical idea, why don't they just make them expandable. Like they were over a decade ago.
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, hell they could even ... gasp, use it to sell their own memory cards!!! I'm seriously sick of everything going either to the cloud for storage or just having non-expandable storage with a massive premium price jump over a similarly sized sd card.

I think they did it this way to make the unit more water resistant. An external SD card slot is one more point of failure where water could get in.

It really depends if you want to do electronics as a profession or a hobby? I don't really believe everyone has to go down the four year degree path to get the kind of experience they want, especially if it's for a hobby, but if you want to go into something like designing/fixing electronics as a day job then it may be necessary to obtain some level of degree and/or certification.

A start would be looking into some electrical engineering courses at local community colleges to see if you'd like to get deeper into the subject. From there you can decide what area you wanna concentrate on, which affects if you want to try for a 2 or 4 year degree and/or the necessary certifications.

@@sjm4306 ah I see, so if someone buys one of these new, do they have to have soldering equipment or not to do this? I only have the knife and hairdryer. Also, does the thing feel more flimsy after the mod is done or does it feel the same just without water resistance
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 Жыл бұрын
Technically no soldering required (though it is usually a good idea to desolder the battery before swapping the sd card as working on a live circuit has a risk of damage). I don't really notice a difference after the mod but I'd guess the water proofing is a bit less effective as I reused the original adhesive (replacing it with new adhesive and properly applying it would get it back to original condition).

i wonder if a 256gb card would work?!
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 Жыл бұрын
I'm sure it would work, but there are two possible gotcha's: the entire capacity may not be fully recognized (depends on how the firmware's address space is implemented) and even if it does there's definitely a hard limit on how many tracks will fit in the music database (I think I remember reading the limit is somewhere around 4000 tracks but I could be misremembering).

It's an interesting idea, and your skills are obviously well above average, but this looks like quite a lot of trouble to go to for this player when you could simply get one of the much better players compatible with high resolution audio that come with one and often two SD card slots for expansion. Also, I wouldn't want to compromise the moderate water resistance by breaking that seal, especially because I often carry mine in my shirt pocket, where that resistance is really useful while I'm out mowing the yard and doing other work get the sweat going.
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I wouldn't suggest specifically going out to buy this player to mod, but if someone already has one and wishes it had more memory then this mod will do just that. As for breaking water resistance, if that's a key feature then applying silicone lubricant to the rubber o-ring seals before reassembly and applying a new cut adhesive to the front bezel (though not sure how much waterproofing this actually does even on a stock player, I expect most of that is handled by the previously mentioned rubber seal ring) will do the trick.
