Two things can be true: Kevin Durant was the best player in the 2017-18 Championship teams and deserved credit for what he accomplished. And it was the closest thing to a 1A/1B situation. The Warriors didn’t go after KD because they didn’t have enough to win a title, who do you think we’re the favorites as soon as they lost the Finals? They went after him because they could and they wanted to. Kevin Durant is one of the greatest players ever thag perfectly fit the system. If you can add a guy like him without breaking up your team and keeping good depth: you do it, no matter where you finished previously. This is why the discussions about Steph, Skip was creating even before this 2017-21 were so insulting. The way he discussed this guy you’d think he’s a regular season player who hasn’t broken through or had much Playoff success, while in reality, even before 2022, he was a 2x MVP, 3x Champion, had been to 5 straight NBA Finals, and had the sixth highest scoring average in the Finals ever. He was their best player in the 15, 16, and 19 Playoffs when they made those runs (KD was injured in 2019 and Steph averaged 37 to send them to the Finals). That’s a majority of that run including a title in that span. That’s why what he did in the 2022 Finals was not a surprise, it’s what I expected, because this is who he’s always been, since that 6 game series they lost to San Antonio in 2013.

It’s funny how Skip always goes back to 2016 because KD had a collapse in 2016 too. His team was 3-1 against those same Warriors in the WCF. Then they lost 4-3. Skip uses Westbrook as the scapegoat because he hogged the ball too much for being an inefficient basketball player (which is true). Though that’s half the story the other half was KD wasn’t a good enough leader on the team and he also had a game or two where he wasn’t at his best either. It’s funny how that always gets swept under the rug by Skip. Bottom line KD needed the warriors a little bit more than they needed him. -MC Ron
