I live and work in Japan, and while I love it here, the work culture has gotten out of hand for everyday people. Working 12 hour days and taking no days off is not only common, but even expected, in what we call “Black” companies. These are typical corporate entities with antiquated work ideologies that will purposefully overwork, underpay, and low key threaten to ruin your professional reputation if you quit. It’s not every company, but it more than you would think. The only difference is that no one here calls it “hustle culture”. It is just normal. No one will admire you or give you props for it. No one is proud of it, and they shouldn’t be. It’s a toxic work culture that is slowly draining the life from people for no other reason than “it’s just the way it is.” Don’t let this become the norm in North America.

That's horrible, especially when you consider how Asia in general treats mental illness. And that's saying something, when nearly every place around the world treats mentally ill people like shit. I hate both the normalization of it in the east, and I hate how it's idolized in the west. There's no way anyone can take what is essentially slavery with the illusion of a choice and make it into something to aspire for. Not a damn person in this world should be killing themselves for the decision between food, water, shelter, and simple luxuries. We've advanced far beyond the need for that kind of struggle.

It already is, and has I mean before the unions in America advocated for higher working standards Americans would sleep on a literal rope and call it a day.
