Phil Lynott father was from Guiana, British Guiana whilst his mother was Irish and was raised in Ireland. Despite facing no racism Lynott felt different (Ireland back then was very white and religious). Thankfully due to Irish Catholics facing discrimination themselves, they knew what it was like so being Irish myself i'm quite proud that there is little overt racism or any practiced deliberately. My parents generation in decades gone by could remember going to England to try and find work only to find many lodgings with signs saying No Irish, No Blacks. Anyone whose a racist are just ignorant, the only difference between us is those living in hot countries have evolved more melanin pigment in their skin to protect their bodies from the sun and the ultimate irony is that everyone originates from Africa until early humans migrated out of Africa and around the world.

He was a black Irish man raised by his white single mother after she was dis-owned by her family. He had great love for her and wrote songs about her. This is actually an old irish folk song that turned out to be the first hit. They were huge all over and they erected a statue of him in his home town.

He was raised by his grandparents but this was because his mother wanted him to have a father figure and his grandfather filled that role perfectly. His mother though still stayed close to him and played an active role throughout his life. In fact they were very close. She also moved him there so he wouldn't face the racism he'd seen in England. From all accounts his childhood was a very happy one.

Thin Lizzy has so many great songs. This song was one of their early works. Phil Lynott the lead singer had a black father and a white mother. There is a great "Behind the Music" story about Phil. Continue the good reviews.

His father was Black Brazilian and mother a Dublin woman....she only died last year I think. Philomena a wonderful woman. I don't think any son had ever idolised his mother like Phil did her. They have so many Epic tracks but as always the popular ones that got air play remain so sonomoyus but tracks like Renegade, cold sweat, sun goes down, thunder and lightning....list goes on! Epic band ahead of their time!

Yes, Phil Lynott was of mixed race, his mother was white. This was an old Irish folk song. Thin Lizzy was a very underrated band here in the U.S. but I believe pretty successful in England and Ireland. "Whiskey in the Jar" is an Irish traditional song set in the southern mountains of Ireland, often with specific mention of counties Cork and Kerry. The song, about a rapparee (highwayman) who is betrayed by his wife or lover, is one of the most widely performed traditional Irish songs and has been recorded by numerous artists since the 1950s. Here are the lyrics: As I was goin' over The Cork and Kerry Mountains I saw Captain Farrell And his money, he was countin' I first produced my pistol And then produced my rapier I said, "Stand and deliver or the devil he may take ya" I took all of his money And it was a pretty penny I took all of his money, Yeah, and I brought it home to Molly She swore that she loved me, No, never would she leave me But the devil take that woman, Yeah, for you know she tricked me easy Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da Whack for my daddy, oh Whack for my daddy, oh There's whiskey in the jar, oh Being drunk and weary I went to Molly's chamber Takin' Molly with me But I never knew the danger For about six or maybe seven, Yeah, in walked Captain Farrell I jumped up, fired my pistols And I shot him with both…

I would say Baileys for the ladies, and maybe Powers, Tullamore Dew, Teelings, or Bushmills whiskey for the guys. The singer was Phil Lynott, his dad was black and his mother and him came from Dublin.

@Spud Ryan, There's lots of Myths and stories about St Patrick, but according to his own autobiography, Confessio, Patrick was born in Britain of a Romanized family. At age 16 he was torn by Irish raiders from the villa of his father, Calpurnius, a deacon and minor local official, and carried into slavery in Ireland. He spent six bleak years there as a herdsman, during which he turned with fervour to his faith. Old Kilpatrick on the North shore of the Clyde is where it is thought that he was taken to Ireland. He escaped Ireland and returned to his family but returned to Ireland to Evangelise the Irish people. Toward the end of his life, he retired to Saul, Downpatrick, present day Northern Ireland, where he may have written Confessio. It is said that an angel conveyed to him that he was to die at Saul, the site of his first church, despite his wishes to die within the ecclesiastical metropolis of Ireland. His last rites were administered by St. Tussach (also spelled Tassach or Tassac).

People have been singing Whiskey in the Jar for about 400 years. The Dubliners, The Gratefull Dead & Metalica are 3 groups who recorded it.This is a traditional song from the 1600s, so nobody actually wrote it. It's about the real life murderous highwayman, Patrick Flemming. He made the mistake of robbing a military officer & was hanged in 1650 after being betrayed by his girlfriend.
