Crazy, I was just watching your 2011 North South video with Marcello Garcia this afternoon and thinking "Must check if Stephan has an escapes video."

When i typed in "how to escape north" the first prediction youtube made was north korea 😂

This was great. I've had one particular BJJ guy who seems to love the north-south position, and has been owning me on it. Time to escape it :)

I like the Cosby grip to create space. Exactly what I was looking for from this position.

anyone ever wonder why side control is not called east - west 🤔
@landonpowell62965 жыл бұрын
Because sometimes it'd be west - east.
@benbrumett56495 жыл бұрын
North south refers to the body positions being in line with each other but facing the opposite directions. East west would be the same position. Side controll would be south west, south east, ect.. idk tho I'm just a white belt lol

Those name are invented, it could be called that too. The real names of all this positions comes from Judo.

IMO the best escape tech was the double Cosby grip one. Everything else left you in potentially greater danger.

Hello stephen I've been an avid watcher and fan for many years now. I haven't trained for 2 years as a result of a bad hip injury. I want to resume my training when I have my hip replacement. I only recently seen you have had yours done. How are you getting on are you able to still train and maybe spar. I need some positive news as I consider myself only temporarily sidelined. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Ive seen Firas Zahabi, emphasizing the frame to escape side control. I can see How that would be helpful to get out of N/S

I absolutely hate north south. Getting caught in it is just a claustrophobic hell. Hate whenever they just sit there and hold on to it like there’s no tomorrow... bleh
@takingbacktoxic78983 жыл бұрын
Originally that is the purpose of the technique, to put your weight on the chest and face of the person to smother them.

Stephan, I like this, because I didn't know any NS escapes. But, I'm talking from my experience, when I'm caught in nourth-south, my opponent is always in sprawl. This means I can't frame on the hip and I can't grab the legs. What then? All the guys I'm fighting with in my gym use north-south while in sprawl only. And they pivot on top of you using chest pressure. I do that myself when I end up controlling my opponent with north-south. This is how we fight. So, what options do I have then? LE: It's okay, I've commented before seeing the entire video. Prevention is the key. Not getting in the position.
@nohbdy11225 жыл бұрын
You can still frame the hips when they sprawl.
@MoooseBlood5 жыл бұрын
I would grab their belt and spin on your back. If their sprawled it makes it easier to possibly go to closed guard or at least half guard.

As a bigger guy, I can defend a lot of straight guard passes, but a small quick guy or a taller guy can easily get past and put me in a North South type position. I find myself there a lot lately. Hmmm

Definitely not digging this whole "getting back into side control" - the guy who put you in North-South will probably start from side control on one side, get you in North-South, then transition to side control from the other side anyway.
