Here's how to take back from closed guard; this works for BJJ white belts and for black belt world champions like Roger Gracie. From www.grappleart..., the amazing Grapplearts instructional featuring renowned jiu-jitsu instructor Jon Thomas.

Great series. I've tried a variety of grip breaks, many similar to what is shown. For guys north of 210 or so, we end up just looking at each other with the unbroken grips in place. The only way I've found to make big guys let go is to attack other parts of them in a way that makes them want to let go. "They say break the grips then pass. The older I get the more I have to pass while they still have grips." -- Leo Vieira

fyi the red border around the video thumbnail somewhat matches the way how KZbin shows bottom red border on videos you already watched. Confused me a little, made me think I have seen the video before. Could be not a bad idea to remove the red border or replace it with different color. The content is great, I'll try it today :) thank you!

I love this sequence, but the number one problem I run into is after dragging the arm and shrimping out, they use their free arm (and sometimes the dragged arm if they can get the grip) to grab my bottom arm (the one that did the drag) and pull it as hard as they can in front of them. The opposite of the way I'm trying to rotate around them, stopping me from being able to rotate around. I guess that's a reasonable defense. Any tips for that response?

If I understand the scenario you describe correctly then it sounds like you could transition to an armbar and/or the pendulum sweep. With the arm across position the backtake, the armbar, and the pendulum sweep work synergistically

i would also be wary about the opponent's left arm. If you do not bring your right leg clear, the uke opponent can just LATCH on or hunker down on your leg trapping you and start to control you from that bottom leg. you need to free your knee line to mobilize your hip line

5:55 with all that space between them a good blue belt could escape with ease

The second hook will literally be following in suit immediately after the first hook... that space isnt enough for them to capitalize on.

I imagine he's leaving space so you can see what he's doing with his legs. In practice I'd assume he at least keeps his upper body in contact with the other guy through the entire movement.

@@acidreflux19 well yes that is accurate. There will probably not be much space at all, only enough to rotate the hooks into position.
