It's a team game . Bulls team defense held Sonics under 90ppg in the 96 finals while Jordan was 27pts on 41% and the TEAM defense held Utah to 54pts in a finals game in 98. I once saw a MJ's interview that he explicitly said he didn't regret his 1st retirement and instead he genuinely enjoyed his baseball period. His 1st retirement helped him have a good rest, physically and mentally. And during his absence, the bulls underwent rebuild, being reinforced. Those factors greatly contributed to the 2nd 3 peats. If MJ didn't retire in 93, they could make to final But I don't think their winning chance high. After all Olajuwon and his Rockets were unstoppable during 94 - 95. I personally loved MJ's Wizards years. After watching him retire in 1994, and then 1998 again, the NBA wasn't the same without him. He saw another challenge and the greateast of all time felt he had gas left in the tank. His numbers weren't vintage but he was still phenomenal, a must watch player on a nightly basis. Look at his highlights from when he was 40 years old and compare that to stuff you see today from 20 and 30 year olds. He came back 20 lbs heavier, played forward, and was carrying the Wizards, who lets face it were terrible. He was much more cerebral. His skill set, footwork and moves were so tactical. He really had to pick his spots without the athletic ability. We all like the idea of walking in the sunset a champion, but when you are "the man in the arena" I think you need to have the game retire you and not the other way around. He should regret nothing. Bigger, Faster, Stronger, more athletic, better passer, better teammate, better rebounder, more longevity, didn’t have a HOF coach, better 3pt shooter, could defend 5 positions with ease, not able to hand check on defence because of the rule change, played against stronger teams, his teams crumbled after he left while Jordan’s still won 50+... etc. But let me guess, his finals record is the only thing that defines him right?

Lavar Ball yeah bc Jordan built his teammates up, expected greatness. Lebron just shuffled the deck every year, jumps team to team. He has the ball in his ends most of the time. All his teammates do is stand on the three point line. So when Lebron leaves the team, it becomes a mess, and there’s new faces. It’s a completely different team lol And don’t even bring up “he can defend 5 positions” that’s the biggest lie I ever heard. He wanted NO part of Dirk in 2011. NONE. I don’t think he even rubbed elbows with him in game 6 lol He’s never won a DPOY either.

The last comeback was a favor to David Stern and Ab Pollin. The league at the time ratings were down because Jordan’s retirement and other factors. A promise was made that ownership would be given to Mike but Ab Pollin pulled back in the agreement that’s why Micheal was seen driving off furious.

Even if you want to go with the actual timeline with the Wizards - Jordan & The Wizards would've made the finals in 2002. So not including the hypothetical return in 1999 & 2000, you have 1989 if they got past the Pistons. 1994, 1995 & 2002. 4 highly plausible finals appearances.

Only regret I can see from this is retiring in his physical prime after his 93 season. The Bulls still topped the East without him those years, he could've easily gotten 8 if he wanted.

I wish I could find the video where he said it, but I think I heard MJ say he had one regret over wondering if they could've remained perfect in the Finals. As long as the core stayed together with Phil, I think Jordan would've preferred to have kept playing until they couldn't reach the finals anymore or finally got beat.

i used to think about why he did what he did..and at time not understand,,, now im adult and ecant play anymore, and i get it all! he loved the game .. he was on top.. tragedy... he wanted play baseball , he knew he could so he went for it..then he realize still love the game,, and head clear and ready to return! the wizards was again he loved the game ..he wanted play while still able .so he did... it doesnt tarnish what he did, it only makes him more likeable that he was just having fun.. not worried about legacy...and it makes for a more interesting time line of his life ..

Jay Williams is spot on about MJ’s philanthropic side. It’s easy to google and see that he was giving from the 80s. He’s given huge amounts of money during his career and post career but he’s done it with little fan fare especially before social media.

I agree with Steve and Jay Williams. Michael had nothing more to prove. When he came out of retirement to play with the Wizards, a few things happened. At first, he looked old. But after he got on national TV in an after game press conference and said "I THINK WE STINK!! These guys are young enough to play far better than they are now!" That lit a fire under their seats and with that, he turned that team into winners and that was his main objective. For the first time, the Wizards had a winning record! He knew he wasn't going to win another championship. Especially with that team because they didn't think on the high level that he did. Second, young guys at that time who had never seen him play, got to see The Legend up close personal! Guys like Tim Duncan, Yao Ming, Dirk Newitski and even Vince Carter were all ecstatic! And even guys who were still playing like Shaq, Kobe, Allen Iverson, and many others were happy to see him come back because even though he wasn't the player of old, they knew he still had plenty of gas in the tank and they had better elevate their games! He showed the Wizards the true meaning of competing and what it takes to win! He also showed them how told to handle reporters after a game. Also, he inspired many people in their 40s and beyond that you can be 38, 39 and 40 years old and still got it!

I agree with Max on this one. Wizards years ruined it to a degree for me. Not completely but a blemish a bit on the resume. Those years, not too many people know, lowered this career FG % to under 50%. FYI, he was at %51.5 as a Bull. Absolutely mind blowing numbers scoring that much at that clip for a guard.

Kobe once told a new young player when the kid tried to say hello "you don't have enough accolades to talk to me yet". It sounds cold! But great players know that they're going to be very hard on their teammates until they get it right! So don't try to be his friend yet cause you might not like him.
