@lesslighter - Take it from an Icelander, we are not in the EU. Our application was dropped last year. The EEA is one thing but our main problems are our fisheries. The EU would force us to share them with the rest of the Europe. That's why our application was taking so long, Brussles was refusing to give on concessions to Iceland in regards to our EEZ. We do not want anything to touch our greatest renewable resource. We kicked the British out of our waters during the Cod Wars and we're not handing them out for free to Brussels.

I live in Iceland and watched this game with my 7 year old daughter who was visiting me from Virginia. Quite an event because we as well as a good deal of Reykjavik the capitol were in the city center watching on the big screen. I lived in Brazil during the World Cup and saw how they got into their national team and now here and I wish the states had something similar to this but we don't. We have the Olympics and the Super Bowl but those are different because we don't come together as a people and embrace it. During a World Cup game that Brazil is playing I would have to estimate at least 90% of the 200 millions Brazilians are watching and 98% of the Icelandics watched them beat England as well as watched them lose to France.

It's a bit ironic all the Brexits joke, though, because Iceland was never part of the European Union. Funny how Nordic nations like Iceland and Norway can stay out of the EU and no one calls them xenophobic.
@jamnana22358 жыл бұрын
There's a bit of nuance to this: There were always lots of sensible non-xenophobic reasons to leave the EU, many of those reasons were even made by the Leave campaign. The more important point is that the loudest voices in the Leave campaign didn't run on those points but were instead running on xenophobic slogans and (arguably) most of the Leave voters were voting out of xenophobia instead of more reasonable motivations.
@karililjendal8 жыл бұрын
Norway and Iceland's reasons for not joining the EU are not at all xenophobic. Both countries accept immigrants freely, and I know that in Iceland, the vast majority of the population want the country to accept more. They are also still apart of the Schengen open borders pact.

one of the biggest reason iceland dont want anything too do witht the EU is too protect our 200mile exclusive fishery zone since that is 40% of our Export and if we would join the EU we would have too share it and then our controld fishing would get fucked and fish population around iceland would drop dramaticlly

okay how about this, i just came up with a killer strategy! 1 man leads that ball, 10 others teammates surround! him tightly, so noone can get this lousy ball, they go this way (as a triangle structure) straight to the opponents gate, untill it's there! Huh! And why da heck i don't get paid billions like all those fancy coaches? ;P

are you american? then i guess it's perfectly normal to call it slow and boring. you grew up watching american sports, americans love sports like american football or basketball which have plenty of scores and they grow impatient when the teams are not scoring for a long time. i grew up on the other side of the world where football (soccer) is like a religion and people love it so much more than any other sport. if i were american, then i probably would have preferred american football as well .

that would be incredibly boring. simple and naive of you. Football is so stupid and boring that the whole world cares about it.(Sarcasm)

Here’s an idea: call our game football and your weird game can be called 0.3 meter ball.

This is why football > other sports: No other big sport is so hard to gamble on, nowhere else do underdogs win or at least draw this often. What you might call "low scoring game" only means that every time you DO try to score, it's sooo much more important than - say - a single shot in basketball. That's why they are allowed to celebrate like crazy, because one goal can mean the world (cup). It's not boring to watch, it's like a showdown in the wild west: if you score, you're damn well in the game. If you can score again, you're looking really good. It's not BAD if you only score just before the end, it just adds suspense with every second going by. Bet on a footie game and you'll understand how tense it is for people who understand all facets of the beautiful game.

Forget "Euro cup soccer tournament," you can tell Stephen knows nothing about soccer from the phrase "powerhouse England."

Let's make a deal: we'll call it depending on where you are. If I ever to go to the US, I'll call it soccer, but while I'm here in Europe (or anywhere else in the world), I'll call it football. But that means any American tourist out of the US has to also call it football, but back in the US can call it soccer all you like.
