I like the delayed reaction to “I couldn’t see myself spending a month in a house without mirrors ”. Stephen’s look as if to say “Oh do keep up”.

"He eyed me carefully... and then he looked at my face." (The last line edited out obviously for decorum on this occasion. There's a version of this that used to be on the internet with Stephen reading it seated and in an elegant drawing room-type setting. It's a more effective performance than this one and I wish it were still posted. Although this performance is good it feels a bit rushed - probably because he was given a limited time to perform it.)

They edited out "Oh, Shit" which is maybe a better reading of the line.

Hahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahaha! I love word play humor. "Left prudence behind so I was alone." "A. Oh, B." LOL There's a comic from Mexico, Eugenio Derbez, who is a master at it as well. His "Al Derecho y al Derbez" half hour comedy show from the 80s, and subsequent others, were howlfests. Fry is a Wagner fanatic as I trust you know. We're in accord on that opera master. Wagner was a randy boy with one especially bad belief, but he's dead so he can't run amok anymore and we still have his music, so, I think we made out ok after all. Mil gracias por compartir, salud!

De Nada...como siempre. Ok, ahora sé ... tú hablas español ... Yo No sé mucho sobre comedia mexicana. Lo siento. Envíame algunos enlaces. Mi español no es tan bueno como tu inglés, pero parece que entiendes las delicias del humor ... La mayoría de los ingleses no entienden esto. ¡¡¡BIEN HECHO!!! MI AMIGO XXX

¡¡Horale compadre, tu tambien!! No worries, the planet is a big place, and as the song goes, we get by with a little help from our amigos. =) I just now read your comment at the other post (I'll answer over there in a sec). But I'll say this here: where you live now, you have Spanish speaking friends I trust, so perhaps you can press one into service to translate the second clip I'm going to provide here of an excerpt from one of Derbez's shows. I would happily do so here, but it wouldn't work. Both are under five minutes. The first clip is of him giving an "English lesson" to his co-worker that is hilariously wrong. He writes out the answers so you'll see what I mean. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4usd5d7fcydlck The second is an example of his word play that is stupendously funny and masterful. Playing a famous fictitious tv personality, he reads aloud a letter (see what I did there? har) found in the waiting room of a hospital. The letter isn't about medical procedures, but he uses medical vocabulary pronounced just wrongly enough to sound like the words that obviously are in the letter and are phonetically close when said just so: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqOriGiGqa6Mg6c ¡Disfrutar!

Yeah. I watched your vids... So true...it works the same for English speaking Spanish of course. My problem...verbs...I was speaking one day to the boyfriend of a friend of mine and I wanted to say "We like it" (the boyfriend and me like it...the food)....of course I said "Nos Gustamos". My friend said...you just told me you and my boyfriend like each other...I was soooo emabarrased! LOL

LOL Yes, very tricky those pesky verbs. It only really matters when addressing strangers and elders. With friends, no worries.

If you like this sketch, and know spanish, Les Luthiers, specially the old ones, were absolute masters at word play and double meanings. I wish I could translate them so I could share them with more people, but humor is impossible to translate, specially word games and local expressions. They are great musicians too, they make great parodies of classical music, medieval, gregorian, rennaissance, etc In case you want to see them, here are some kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKTXqJiXa7d0ZrM kzbin.info/www/bejne/pISvaWOinqxolbM kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJWneYtuq86ri7c kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6m5nJ-jbtRqfa8

In the UK, a raincoat is called a “Mac”, short for Macintosh, the last name of the inventor of a waterproof (and not very breathable) fabric.
