The high plains and the high desert have the most beautiful structured storms. I live in New Mexico and although we only get maybe a dozen or so proper super cells over the state in a given season they tend to be low precipitation and quite photogenic. Although they are never super cells the summer monsoon produces some beautiful isolated storms with brilliant cloud to ground lightning displays over some amazing landscapes. My favorite is when you get a lone towering cell that forms about five to twenty miles away at night with an otherwise clear sky and you are far enough back that the base doesn't obscure your view of the side of the storm and the anvil. I've seen storms blossom over the mountains seemingly out of thin air in under half an hour. The best ones will practically strobe with clear air and CG lightning. I remember watching one almost two decades ago when I was night hiking under the moonlight up in the Sandia foothills when a lone storm practically exploded into the otherwise clear sky. There was a full moon that night which beautifully lit up the storm structure enough to make out the knuckles at the top of the freshly forming cumulonimbus. Once it really got going it was producing a lightning strike about every five to ten seconds, but what really set this beautiful storm apart was how the lightning would arc down the sides and crawl up along the anvil. I must have seen a hundred or more anvil crawlers that night. It was nearly stationary and strobing with lightning for a good 45 minutes or so at it's peak intensity. I will never forget that moon and star lit storm over the mountains. Sadly, it's been a couple of years since I've seen a truly God tier lightning show where all the conditions line up perfectly. For some reason the last handful of monsoon seasons have been dominated with periods of strangely overcast and muddy skies that can last for many days at a time. It keeps the temperatures and convective activity down. We still get the storms but they tend to be less violent, less isolated and less photogenic. Sometimes during these overcast periods it just rained lightly for hours at a time which is very abnormal weather for midsummer in the high desert. I remember as a kid we never had these long periods of overcast in the summer unless the remnants of a tropical system drifted over the area.

Since I am terrified of storms, I held my breath through this entire video. I still can't breathe. OMG I envy you!

Stephen this vlog is awesome!, I'm loving these behind the chase scenes, vlogs, time lapse combos, they bring me rite into the scene, feel like I'm there with you guys, going to watch this again later tonight. I'm sure that structure has made the season now, it looked beautiful over the field. Looking forward to the next one and thanks for inspiring us over here in N. Ireland to keep chasing storms and enjoying nature.

Great video as always. I'm sorry to hear it's been a lackluster season. I haven't had much luck this year either, but I'm just a complete amateur when it comes to this stuff.

Beautiful storm! Seems like Colorado always gives great structure. We have had more tornado outbreaks in Winter than in Spring, not to mention it has been an HP mess this Spring. Last time this happened, we had a very active Hurricane season. I hope you and Tuesday are doing great!

I've seen a lot of wall clouds /shelf clouds. These giant circular cloud structures are very interesting to me...thank you for the great views and the time lapse. Do you ever do any IR filter time lapse of lightning/ storms?
