Excellent video. Very thought provoking. Sadly, most of the solutions can never be implemented because there are way too many simple minded people that believe a fictional deity is in control and see no need for such research.

I find the idea of aliens coming to earth ridiculous. What I can imagine is that maybe, just maybe, through *immense* progress in technology, human beings would start colonizing other plantets when the earth is gone, other solar systems when the sun is gone, and through a massive coincidence meet other life forms that didn't originate from earth and also happen to be intelligent.

Proverbs 24 1 Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them. 2 For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief. 3 Through wisdom is a house builded; and by understandings is it established. 4 And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches. 5 A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength. 6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counselors there is safety. 7 Wisdom is to high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate. 8 He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person. 9 The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men. 10 If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small. 11 If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; 12 If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? And he that keepeth thy soul, doth he not know it? And shall not he render to every man according to his works? 13 My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste: 14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off. 15 Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: 16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again; but the wicked shall fall into mischief. 17 Rejoice not when thy enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: 18 Lest the Lord see it, and it displease Him, and he turn away his wrath from him. 19 Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious because of the wicked; 20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out. 21 My son, fear thou the Lord and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change: 22 For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both? 23 These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment. 24 He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him: 25 But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them. 26 Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer. 27 Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house. 28 Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause; and deceive not with thy lips. 29 Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work. 30 I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; 31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and a stone wall thereof was broken down. 32 Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. 33 Yet for a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: 34 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.

and what would you want to mine there? the distribution of chemical elements is quite nice here on earth. i couldnt think of any element that would justify the effort. sure, the earth has a liquid layers and plate tectonics, that makes some heavier elements like iron and sulfur quite rare on the surface of the earth, compared with asteroids, but... why should we? energy also wouldnt make sense, because its damn cold and dark so far away from sun.

#8 Most of the "mass extinctions" are calculated, not observed. Observed rates of extinction are about 1 species a year, not 10k. Of course we should manage our resources wisely, but the people who say crazy things about mass extinctions are not in a position to make wise management decisions.

John Chapter 9 1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. 4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. 6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, 7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam,(which is by interpretation, Sent) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. 8 The neighbors therefore, and they which before had seen him that was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? 9 Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. 10 Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? 11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and received sight. 12 Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not. 13 They brought to the Pharisees him that afore time was blind. 14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. 15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. 16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. 17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet. 18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. 19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? 20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: 21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. 22 These words spoke his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age, ask him. 24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. 25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. 26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? 27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear:wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? 28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples. 29 We know that God spoke unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. 30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvelous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. 31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. 32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of the one that was born blind. 33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. 34 They answered and said unto him, Thou was altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. 35 Jesus heard that they cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? 36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? 37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. 38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him. 39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. 40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? 41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

#9-See my first comments on this thread for my objection to plans to negotiate our way out of trouble with alien life. Additionally, I deny that one can reasonably talk of the chances of life in the Universe when one does not know how life originates. More planets does not necessarily mean more chance of life.

Well bramcorleone, I believed that as well. When I was child I believed that when I'll be adult, we will live on a Moon or some other planet (and so did some adults around me). And as you can see we still can't fly into the space really cheaply. I do hope you are right though, and we will see first real colonies on Mars or Moon in our lifetime :) But I'm skeptical about the overcoming death in our lifetime... :-/

It's just baffling to me how many people in the audience are just so easily amused by this speakers theories. His ideas are not that far-fetched from reality and I hope he really didn't give this speech in Monterey,CA because then that would explain how there is so many self-ignorant people who live near me causing the environment harm without a thought to what the repercussions are for others just because they have money. Now that we're getting close to 2019 and even after all the natural disasters we've witnessed all over the world (for those who don't live in a bubble); We still don't care to take action it seems to me that humanity will be responsible for its own extinction. Denial is a powerful veil clouding peoples minds.

I think its highly possible that there's are either primitive race or a highly evolved aliens as well as microscopic creatures somewhere in the Milky-Way galaxy. If earth humans is destroyed by natural disasters or an object from space we are bound to believe that the universe is teaming with alien life. People always find this as a joke and yet we are the aliens living in a planet so isolated from the rest of the universe. Why is it funny when a person states that alien life exist?

Depression is not curable. It's merely treatable. Make no mistake about it. To cure depression means to somehow normalize the way synapses in the brain function eliminating the need to continually rely on drugs to lessen the symptoms. Meanwhile antidepressants are effective only 18-10% above placebo level and even that number may be exaggerated, because ethical considerations prevent us from studies designed to cancel out negative placebo effect.

Despiser Despised I don't see any cover up by the liberal media. Problem have been that this topic have been too Hollywood, too science fictiony, too relegated to crackpots and so on that it's only now a lot of people have started taking it seriously, especially with the rise of fully automated killing drones. Everybody in the media, sciences and tech field should read the book Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom as a good starting point.
