bernard was simply the most loved guy in the country.he was a jack of all trades excellent and sucessful in all of them comic pop singer actor both comic and serious and everything in between.yet thats only half the story he had from his early appearences on film with peter sellars an absolutely special qaulity a personality that came through the screen of genuine unforced likeability.whenever he appeared we loved him.he was genius casting as perks in the railway children which if nothing else secured his legacy for future generations of children.his appearence in dr who changed the template of the show due to his wonderful will mott the producers realised that the show needed more fatherly figures like him rather than more screaming yoof hence bradley walsh and john bishop.he appealed to all but his special place is with children.his novelty songs were a mainstay of my youth on saturday morning junior choice.he did famously the wombles but he was at his best just sitting telling stories to kids on his record breaking appearences on jackanory.the gap he has left is immense simply because his death affects so many he really was that rarity a star who was exactly what it said on the box as nice offstage as on and genuinely loved.
