I think it's because some people believe she's a horse shit writer and do not believe she deserves all the recognition and success she's achieved from these books. I'll say, I have to agree. These books are terrible, but they are aimed towards airhead adolescent girls.

For everyone who wants to insult Stephenie Meyer, I suggest they write their own series of books. The Twilight Series is perfect YA fiction, the heroes and villains are straight-forward and the romance is romantic, something I really liked about reading the books. It's very easy to sit back and criticize, quite another to actually do the work it takes to come up with interesting characters, nurture a story, and stay out of your own way to write books.

Margaret Petrov How are we to write, if we don’t know what mistakes not to make? Anyone can write, good for them. But, it’s not good for writing. If perfection of the YA genre can be found in Twilight, then we need to kill YA before it’s too late. Annoying characters with few noble qualities, no consideration put in to respecting what vampires were supposed to embody, barely present villains or heroes, and dysfunctional relationships based around lust and desire are not aspects to good storytelling.

The frustration comes because she became a huge success and is one of the richest authors in the world. Her writing is quite mediocre, so people think other authors, more gifted maybe, more complex, would have deserved her “luck”. Jealousy basically. That’s why people hate the Kardashians too. They make money too easily and are too blessed, while other people that have something to say and to give struggle... If Stephanie would be a mediocre success nobody would have hated her. I'm not a huge fan of Twilight, but I don't really get why so many people are acting so angry over Stephanie Meyer. You don't have to like her books, but you also don't have to come over and hate on her videos. Pramika Kadari I completely get where you're coming from, and all of you're points are undeniably true. And it's not you that I'm really talking about, either! :-) On every Stephanie Meyer or Twilight related video I've seen(I watch them occasionally to get a sense of perspective), there is always some sort of hate group that unlike you, have been saying crude, hurtful, and uncalled for comments, often just blatantly insulting her appearance, or the way she talks... If someone dislikes something, or even thinks that it's a serious injustice, then they have every right to speak their mind. But when someone's simply being cruel because they have nothing better to do on the internet, then that's where it needs to stop. :-) Oh, and thanks, your comment was very insightive!!

Pramika Kadari chill. These kind of books are only a fantasy, even for ‘impressionable teen girls’. I really do hate that idea. My friends and I all read twilight when we were teens, and guess what? We’re in nice healthy relationships now, that don’t reflect what we read back then. Books shouldn’t be censored because of offence, that’s the death of freedom and art. If you don’t like it, then don’t read it. A simple thing that most people live by, but because of twilights success, people are mad? There are far worse books out there, be grateful those aren’t best sellers. I think the twilight books are trash now and I can’t imagine why I ever enjoyed them. However, coming on here and hating on an author who has really not done anything wrong is ludicrous to me. It’s not her fault people are buying her books. How about the positives, such as the fact that this was a ‘gateway’ book that got many people into reading. No? Wanna get back to venting? Well... I tried my best.

I'm getting damaged just from watching her talk. I havent even read the books OR watched the movies and I can already tell she's a terrible writer. She's a walking contradiction. If she writes to pleasure herself, I dont know why she bothered to publish her books. Authors dont just write so that they could enjoy their own story, they write so that others can enjoy it too, but she's openly admitting that she didnt take this into account and yet still cares enough to publish it. I dont get it.

@@Xehanort10 Aw but they do! They may not mean anything to you, but that's ok because as Stephenie said, she wrote them for herself. The books focus a lot, I think, on the importance of strong will and love. It's ok to dislike her novels, but they certainly have meaning. Everything is subjective.
@Xehanort10
@Xehanort10 4 жыл бұрын
@@oona791 If you're releasing a book to the public and aiming it at a certain demographic you should write the book for that demographic not for yourself. And her books can't be about strong will or love because Edward and Bella's relationship is obsessive lust not love. Bella is also one of the most weak and weak willed characters in fiction.
@oona791
@oona791 4 жыл бұрын
@@Xehanort10 As she said, she wrote it for herself. The fact it attracted a fan base IN other dynamics was not her intention nor fault. Plus if it made her happy to write for herself, then surely that's all that matters. There isn't any point in being miserable about what you're writing. Might I also add that her books certainly can be about strong will and love. Have you read the books? You realise within them that she shows deep love for her parents, adopted parents, friends etc, right? Bella's main strength is how selfless she can be in times of trouble. In the first book, she would rather have died than let her mother die. And she went to the ballet studio KNOWING that she could die. That's a pretty strong will right there. Also, she knows what she wants and sticks to it. Their relationship is certainly about love, not obsessive lust. Yeah, there's an element of lust, as there is in most relationships, but what it boils down to is that neither of them have ever found a person who they felt understood them so well, and that is what makes them love each other. Bella certainly isn't weak haha. She knows what she wants and she gets it through determination. She stands up for herself and those around her. Perhaps you've never read the books, or maybe you're small-minded and simply being nasty for the sake of it, but you don't have the right to dictate whether the books have meaning, especially when you have such a limited view of the saga as a whole. It's fine to dislike something, we all have opinions and that is okay, but it isn't right to try and bring an author and their creation down for the sake of it.

I've read all of the Twilight books, as well as the Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. Also, the Official Illustrated Guide. And, I'll say this: Stephenie Meyer thought of her character's histories in depth. Not as much as JRR Tolkien or CS Lewis or JK Rowling. However, she is a successful writer. While I like Stephen King's works that were adapted to movies: he can be disrespectful. Especially, towards Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey. That's something that I, personally, despise. Jumping on bandwagons and not forming your own nuanced opinion on things. I've read JK Rowling's Harry Potter series. Iv'e read Lord of the Rings and half of the Silmarillion. As well as the Hobbit and and the first two books of Narnia. I'll say this much: everyone has their own tastes. I enjoyed the Twilight saga (not so much the love scenes but the action/suspense scenes). Also, Edward in the books is a LOT tougher than movie Edward. In fact, book Edward was Jasper's equal in the training scene in Eclipse. Because of his mind-reading ability. That's one danger (of many) that a writer needs to be aware of when dealing with Hollywood movies of their books/manuscripts. JK Rowling was lenient. However, there are times when you need to put your foot down and say, "Uh-uh. I wrote this scene this way for a REASON." Might make your work take dip with them. But I'd just be satisfied with the book version. I, myself, am an aspiring writer of a four book Fantasy series that I call Elf Sisters. I am currently rewriting the first book and will re-upload it to Amazon's Kindle/KDP. I'm self-publishing because it gives you all of the control. No negotiating with editors/publishers on certain "details". Plus, when I do do Amazon Kindle campaign ads, I can set the budget that I am willing to spend. To anyone who is reading this long comment and considering writing: have a source of income to help support yourself. Because unless you're already a well-known author/writer, it can be DIFFICULT. But I am doing this because I love it. Which is what you need to do if you're serious about writing a fiction/Fantasy series. Some are successful. Some are not. Peace.

As much i hate the movies (haven´t read the books), Stephanie Meyer seems like a nice enough person. Kinda like Ed Wood, a victim of her own horrid craft, listening to this interview makes her seem passionate about her work. She knows her work is nothing groundbreaking, she´s not trying to be Joseph Conrad, she even admits it all started as some sort weird fan fiction. I just wish people would just give a break and not take the books to seriously. The movies are crap, but they're just enough crap to ridicule them. E.L James on the other hand...SHIIIIIIIIT

One of the scariest parts about this series is, it sets back the development of equality amongst the sexes about two-hundred years with the main character's constant dependance on a male figure. This series is turning an entire generation of young women into quiet and submissive domestic abuse victims. The other terrifying part of it being the revelation of how low expectations have become for literature; as well as the shocking (well, not really) amount of thick twits follow this franchise.

I'm a literature major. There's a difference between popular and literary novels. Not bad? All fifteen signs of an abusive relationship in that book, Bella is a Marie Sue, Edward takes abortion casually, Edward and Bella think their superficial attraction is love. Oh yeah, there's really some good in it. But besides my points, I actually look forward to hear what fans say is good about the book. Can't be one-sided here and all.

Well, those that like to read, I'm actually a newly published author. I wrote a crime thriller titled Black Isis. I'm making a series out of it. Also, I'm writing other novels as well. You can get it at amazon.com or the barnes and noble website. I'm self-publishing a bit. Thanks for the support!

Just by listening to this interview and how she states "that she breaks all the rules of writing," it seems that she doesn't even know the first thing about the rules of writing. Us writers (I am an up-and-comer) are the true historians, we write and conveye times in our lives that can't be shoved into a history book. Her lack of research is completely bombarding the world that Bram Stoker made famous and it's just sad that because of this woman's perspective on writing it is going to get more kids to want to write (which is a good thing) but if its anything how Mrs. Meyer is weaving her tails the web of good literature is going to become irrevocabley broken.

I personally find the whole "if you write about some mythological creature then you have to do it like others have done it in the past". Why? If a vampire like in the Twilight books comes to my head why do I have to change it and make it like the one in Dracula? It makes no sense. It literally makes no sense to consciously change that bc you're changing the whole idea your uncouncious mind came up with, your inspiration! you're doing it on purpose just bc society says that you should do that, and thats treating it as business. If you came up with an idea where a werewolf doesnt transform itself when its full moon you should stick to that. Who cares. Its your idea, you dont have to do it like others did it in the past.

Dracula was written of it's time, just like the Great Gatsby and Emile Zola's Rougon-Macquart saga. If you have nothing but the same over and over again, why bother writing at all? Werewolf shape-shifters predate hollywood full-moon mania by thousands of years. The werewolf depicted in The Satyricon (63 A.D.) had no connection with the full moon. Any mythological creature can be anything to anyone. Vampires are fair game for creating new myths, legends & stories.

This is telling: Carey ate breakfast, then he took a shower and went to the store. At the store he met a girl and they talked for a long time. Carey liked her but she blew him off. Then he went home. This is showing: Carey studied the frozen dinners. He'd had turkey and dressing for the last four days, so salisbury steak would be good for a change. But did he want the Big Man's or the regular? I came here because I accidentally clicked on the link. Also, good writing is not an opinion-

The thing I think you have overlooked is that Edward *has* to be careful.One careless moment and he could crush Bella like an eggshell.I'm hoping that the fight in Eclipse will show the power of Stephenie's vampires,and why Edward is so scared for her.Take a look at Emily's face and you'll see what the wrong end of a were can do.I'll charge hell with a bucket of water but even I know when I'm outclassed. Bella shows her stuff in New Dawn.Hide and watch her.

Nobody can say she isnt talented. There is a certain amount of luck that goes hand in hand with success. But she tapped into a story that so many people relate to whether it is well written or not is not the point. Its a story that people love. And she said it in the interview, she didn't write for an audience she wrote for herself. And because she is such an ordinary person people were able to relate to her characters and her story. I think she is talented, and I am not even a huge twilight fan

Stephenie Meyer herself provides an amazing clue to the answer. After her unexpected rise to stardom, she later confessed, I actually did have a dream after Twilight was finished of Edward coming to visit me - only I had gotten it wrong and he did drink blood like every other vampire and you couldn’t live on animals the way I’d written it. We had this conversation and he was terrifying. (12)

she never runs out of ideas for characters? what characters? every half decent writer comes up with tons of supporting characters that are more rounded and better defined than her most important main characters. i feel really really sorry for all these talents out there that can't even make a living with their writing.

Actually he does read her mind. In breaking Dawn at the end of the book she lets him into her mind and it was really sweet to put that at the end of the series instead of jumping straight to him being able to read her mind from the very begining. aAnd he always has to be carefull around her because she is like a soap bubble tohim. BTW i hope this is just having a discusion because i think its really dome for people to start fighting and yelling over simple oppinions. :)

LOL. There were no spelling mistakes in Twilight. And atop that, she may not write the way you think is appropriate, but her character development is awesome. And that's what made people fall in love. It's not just Twilight, it' s Twilight plus all the other books too. If it was TRULY, and in every way crap it wouldn't be so huge among all age groups. Saying you as far as I'm concerned, the haters and the die hards are obsessive.

My God, people just need to leave her alone. I'm not a fan of the Twilight series, and true, she has many flaws when it comes to storytelling and her craft, but she doesn't deserve all of this hate that everyone's giving her. Because the series is so popular, it's become so easy to bash on Meyer, and although I agree with most everyone's opinions, I don't think Meyer deserves *this*. Just let her live her life and don't be so rude about it.

To those out there who don't like Stephenie, I think you're crazy personally, she has such an open mind and has these wonderful stories that she turns into books. She had written the only books ever, that i have ever read, and i've read many, that have actually sparked some emotion. No other book has been able to do that. Her writing is special in so many ways and she shouldn't change a thing, To all of you out there who say that Twilight is horrible, go and read the books yourselves, Experience

You prove my point. you're saying that kids now a days are more interested with their emotional changes, not about the emotional changes of others and the problems they face. My parents saw this and at a young age they encouraged me to read and let my imagination run wild. Now instead of kids imagining to be wizards or great kings or walking in the beautiful shire of middle earth (lotr) they dream about being vampires and having sparkly boyfriends. really?

I've never ever hit the dislike button. This deserved it. I cringed inwardly when she said she only did research on vampires when Bella did in the book for the sake of seeing what Bella would find. And you shouldn't have so many of your "fans" demanding that you make an alternate ending. I thought the ending was terrible, and I'm entitled to my own opinion, as is everyone else, but you don't want people rewriting a story because it sucks, you want fan-fiction because they liked it.
