Stephen, great project. I really like the shape and beads. No need for embellishments--it's great as is. I've been using Ack's products for over a year and really like them. Better than Yorkshire grit in my opinion..and it's made in the USA! I just finished a spalted maple off-center bowl and Ack's took out some really stubborn tear-out that sanding to 400 grit didn't. Smooth as a baby's bottom! I also use them on acrylics and just tried them on some man-made turquoise. Worked well. I'm sure as you use them you'll like them even more. Cheers

Stephen, Always a pleasure to watch you at work in your shop, that is a very pretty piece of wood, after the Deft was applied and you were spinning the lathe by hand, the grain flashing would have made me stop, right there, so I didn't screw it up, but I'm glad you carried on with the Ack's, that's a really good looking finish. As a rookie woodturner, I love to get a feel for what processes everyone chooses, and what works, because I've found some that don't work real well. Real nice job on the shape and the finish. Ed White
@StephenOgle3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ed. It is always a little intimidating to venture away from your tried and true methods but sometimes you find something worth using. I can now say that I highly recommend these Pastes from Acks. Just use it according to the instructions and you will be good to go. Take care.

Hi Stephen, glad to see you doing some wood turning again. That bowl is amazing the finish has brought out the beauty of the wood, I agree with you, the fractual burning would have spoilt that wood. I am from SA and not many finishes are available here because of the exchange rate. Great work there, thanks for sharing
@StephenOgle3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Cher. I still want to do more Fractal burning but not on this piece. I just thought it would be an injustice to do it to this particular piece. Thank you and take care.

I would say Stephen, that is Sapele. Just by the change in sheen as you turned it around. I've just completed one myself, turned out well, (not as good as yours), but we don't get to use Acks in the UK. If I may say, great design, excellent finish and well turned sir. Well turned! :-)

Bryan Holden hi Bryan, Kim Tippin has a good video on the making of a friction polish using beeswax, mineral oil and diatomaceous earth. Well worth the time to watch. She is also an awesome turner.
@bryanholden64873 жыл бұрын
@@scottpeterson5913 Thank you Scott. Yes, I agree Kim is a skilled wood turner, I've enjoyed her vids for a while now. A pleasant way she has about herself as well. I was just being a bit lazy, i suppose, when I referred to Acks pastes, not wanting to make it myself. Just trying to take the easy way out for a 70yo. LOL
@StephenOgle3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Brian. This is definitely one or the other. I am tending to think that you are correct with Sapele, They both have the flash you mentioned with good finish and smell the same also. If someone didn't tell me what it was I could probably not tell the difference between Mahogany and Sapele. Thank you for commenting. I too am subscribed to Kim Tippin and really enjoy her videos and have seen her sanding paste. Thank you all for commenting.

Spanish Cedar is almost indistinguishable from mahogany. I recently did a project where I ran out of mahogany and used some spanish cedar in its place in the same piece of furniture, and it matched perfectly and was not noticeable.

Hi Stephen, Fantastic looking bowl. The Acks does an amazing job but it is too expensive here in the UK. Take care. Cheers, Huw

Thank you sir for your comment. I believe you all have another great abrasive paste called Yorkshire Grit. I have used it and really like it also. The Acks did a wonderful job on this project, but if you can't get it, there are lots of other abrasive pastes to try.

Stephen, another nice project. I get a lot out of your voiceover. For instance, you remarked that you like to widen out the depth hole to help judge the curve you need. Common sense that isn’t so common. Thank you.

Thank you Jeff. I found out today what species of wood this is and am going to share it in my next video I will say though that you are correct. Sapele is harder and heavier than mahogany. Wish I could make a bead sniff,sniff. Jims' east ark paste does a good job for 3 bucks per 8 oz. Lol. PS he should give you more free paste with the hundreds of dollars worth of free advertising he got from you.
