I finally got to turn on my new lathe. I chose this beautiful Maple blank I found at Rockler and thought it would make a great first project. I hope you enjoy it!

Wow, very cool to watch an adult male show off his tools and new machine :) Seriously, I really enjoy watching you work your new machine and some sharp tools ...they look like expensive steel. Kind of funny, we really never grow up, a new lathe at 40, 50 or 60+ years of age is probably not much different than a electric 4-wheeler when you are 4 or 5 years old ....just watched my grandsons go thru 4 wheels, striders, oset and finally dirt bikes ....oldest is 4 and youngest is 2 ....the joy and pride they show is probably no different if I had a new lathe that would turn a 24" bowl :) Thanks again for sharing! .....Not sure what I should think about your buying a piece of wood !!!! LOL

Stephen you need some longer insulated probes for burning Lichtenburg designs on the wood and you should also be wearing some insulated electrical gloves to prevent a shock potential. Close to twenty people have died this last year from accidents involved with using electricity to burn designs in wood. Be safe!

Hi Stephen... congrats on the your new lathe... I’ve got the same one... and no regrets.... make sure the Allan screws that fix the the pulleys to the shaft are well fastened... mine came a bit loose.. and caused a worrying sound... fortunately... with tightening the Allan screws... it back to its own quite self...

Hi Stephen Very happy to see yo back - love your style! Your new lathe looks awesome - congrats! I moved from a Delta to a Nova DVR 2024 two years ago and the difference in the torque and varialbe speed down to 100 has made me a better turner for sure. I am not sure your new Grizzley will make you a better turner because your work was already awesome, but I am sure the torque and variable speed will make things much more enjoyable for you !! Again - happy to see you back - and look forward to your videos on a more regular basis. Regards Dennis Beamish Cambridge Ontario Canada

Stephen, great first project off of the new lathe, the bowl turned out really well. I had a bit of a chuckle when you first pronounced the word ogee, I had never heard it said that way before now. The proper way to pronounce it, is to just use the main two letters. And they are the O and the G, the two e's are silent. So from now on you can say it as you were doing all along, or you can call it an O G, it doesn't really make much difference. But some people might better understand, what you actually mean when you do.

Hi from England Mr. Ogle... I thought you'd gone...its that long since your last video I'm trying to remember what your old lathe looked like...lol... The bowl you did here is a beautiful piece as well.... Your new lathe looks the business and I'm sure will provide you with years of reliable service...decent size as well and there's no substitute for weight either.....stops it jumpin n shaking about when stuff's a little out of balance... It's not too dissimilar a size to the old Wilson lathe I've got in storage... But that one runs off flat belts... The handle you say caught your pocket on... Can that be rotated/repositioned...? Or get someone to carefully cut it with a Grinder and weld it so its facing more upward...carefully tidy it up & respray it n all that lot...? Nice to see you back... Glenn. GLMelectrical

I like the intro footage, you seem to be putting wood back onto the blank. That's a skill I need to learn. LOL! One question relating to finishing...did you apply sanding sealer before the satin lacquer? I've found the first coat or two of lacquer soaks into the wood without using sealer causing a blotchy finish, but then again I've not had the luxury of turning such a fine piece of wood. Great inaugural video using the new machine.
