I typically start by looking at your photo reference and see how my mind decides to draw it. Next I watched your video. Then I go back and draw it again. I like to compare my two versions. Thank you for all of your insights! I meant to try this in 10 minutes but lost track of time and 40 minutes later finished my first version. I’ll try it again with a 10 minute timer! I will really appreciate more 10 minute drawings!

Gave this a go. Took longer than 10 min, but by watching how you figure out proportions in real time, I ended up with a drawing I was quite proud of. I even did it in ink only! If fact my husband looked at me in amazement and said “ you drew this?.. Wow”. Thank you for showing your process! ….now off to watch another of your videos… might be take out for dinner tonight 😂😉😊

Nothing wrong with take away (as we call it in Australia)! And you passed the husband test! Your drawing must have been amazing. Well done. And the enthusiasm is just as vital as any technical skills. These real time 10 minute videos are on a separate playlist now for your convenience. Have fun. 😀

Short or long, your videos are my #1 reference when it comes to perspective drawing. Not only the results are pleasing to the eye but also the learning curve in the process is a great satisfaction. In short, Stephen, thank you a million! I didn’t quite get the point you made about the tape and the full and semi full pen but it has probably been discussed earlier. Greetings from Massachusetts.
@stephentraversart7 ай бұрын
Awesome, thank you! The tape is just a way of me knowing instantly what pens to choose from when I’m videoing. I have a lot on my table, and some are almost dead. 😀

I just started drawing/sketching three weeks ago and this is probably diving into water too deep for me, but it’s so helpful to see real time drawing right next to the reference photo. Your in-time narration of your thought process is extremely helpful. I did this drawing before watching the video and now I’ll do it over again after having watched your drawing. I plan to do the others in the series too. I don’t live in an architecturally interesting place so these are really interesting structures to work with. Thank you for sharing these materials.

Practice drawing them quite fast but on small scale drawings so the lines are short. Then you can slowly increase the size. Straight lines will be yours Richard.

Longer real time is problematic, as people still only watch a few minutes (mostly) which works against my channel reach. But I will do more of these. Maybe some can stretch to 15 minutes at least. 😀
@paulkenney49447 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! I'd love to see more real time drawings from you. 10 to 20 minutes is perfect. Your descriptions of your thought process in real time is very beneficial for a beginner like me. I've become a bit addicted to watching your videos to the point that I am not using that time to practice drawing myself! For anyone looking for additional videos from another excellent instructor, I recommend you look at Alphonso Dunn's KZbin channel. He does excellent instruction also. (But you don't get the cool aussie accent!)

Thanks as always Stephen! :) I've got a bit of request if you're ever looking for video topic ideas: What have you found to be the most difficult problems for you personally learning to draw (and paint, as I suppose you solved a lot of these before actually picking up the pen as your main medium), and how did you eventually overcome those problems? Like, what clicked for you mentally/perceptually, as well as in terms of draftsmanship, mark-making and actually being able to put the lines/marks down as intended? A video on this would be interesting as I think there are probably as many different sticking points for artists in their learning journey as there are artists themselves, and finding out what you personally found difficult might give some insight into your approach and way of looking at things... There's a lot that the outside observer can't see, even while watching every stroke of another artist draw, and probably a lot that can't be conveyed even directly by that other artist without them giving something of an autobiographical discussion about the process of developing one's approach in response to the unique challenges that they faced. I hope that kind of makes sense. Always a delight to see that you've uploaded something new!

The doorframe looked huge comparing to the reference but then with the shadow and figure, it ended up perfectly. Dont know if this is contrast related but some parts are more difficult to observe accurately 😅 btw, your Instagram profile is also very motivating! because of those amazing drawings i bought some grey tone markers, they really make a difference - or at leasts hide my poor hatching. 😂
@stephentraversart7 ай бұрын
It’s experience which trains us to spot things that visually mislead us such as this. Knowing they can be there is a big step forward. Yes, the markers take much of the hatching pain out of creating value. Both are great skills to work on. 😀
