My LYS quarter 1 project is to knit items with brioche. They sneak in new techniques to keep progressing skills. I wanted to shy away from this quarter challenge as my first attempts didn't seem to enjoyable and stressful. THEN, I found YOUR tutorial and as others have said, it was fun to watch and I was able to follow along with you. After several tries and lots of rewinds later, think I have the hang of it now and I found brioche rather ... dare I say ... fun! Thank you!

Thank you Stephen! That was the clearest demo of brioche that I have ever seen. I feel like you have opened a whole other world of knitting to me. I have wanted to try some of your beautiful brioche patterns but was afraid. I took a brioche class at a yarn shop years ago. There were about 20 people crammed around a table. I went back for help the next day when I got something wrong. The owner was very rude and told me I needed to learn to read my knitting. I had paid for the class and bought my yarn there. I was not a customer of that shop again and I avoided brioche from then on. I’ve so been wanting to learn. Thank you again. I have bought the Craftsy class too and had watched a little. This really clarifies it all for me and I am going to work on this and watch more of that, as I know she’s a good teacher as well, but I was intimidated by it. You have a wonderful way of explaining things and now I feel I can tackle the class and try Exploration Station which I have wanted to do for years!

I realize now why I don’t use the Continental method: it requires you to move the fingers of your left hand to manipulate the yarn and hold the yarn taut for the stitches. I am extremely right side dominant. My left side of my body is pretty much just along for the ride. My right hand/foot has to do all the hard stuff. The left hand just holds the needle. I am not saying never for Continental, but it won’t be soon.

I just purchased your “night nook” sweater and was wondering how to do the saddle. Your instructions are easy to follow, but much more concentration intensive. You are the Kaffe of this generation. Both innovative, creative, and fun. Thank you.

This is a great tutorial. I began my first brioche project this year and I fould the slyo abbreviations very confusing for an Eglish style knitter. For brk rows it should be ytf, sl. For brp rows I simplify the yo and do it along with the slip, all in one motion. For this I "load" my needle with the slip then yarn over then let them both fall off the left needle to the right. I think it's a bit more efficient. Thank you for the tutorial!!

This clear explanation was wonderful! One question: I'd love a cardigan/jacket in the Brioche swirl pattern but am having a hard time finding anything aside from hats, scarves and shawls. There re a handful of sweaters, but mostly pullovers, vests and short cardigans that won't look right if longer--plus few if any have a shawl collar. Heavy? Yup, it will be somewhat--but I'll take the chance if I can find the pattern! Or is there a way to use brioche stitch for a plain sweater pattern? Any help would be appreciated!!!

Your brioche videos are a the best! I was afraid of brioche, and failed miserably at it. I’m usually an English knitter and all of the demos I found showed continental. I can usually figure things out, but I had a total mental block when it came to brioche. Then I decided to do the Starflake MKAL which has a brioche section. Thankfully, you had a little video accompaniment! At the time, I’d started practicing continental knitting, so I was shakily ok with it. Your video was like turning on a light. I love that you also show English, even though it’s not your go-to method for knitting. I have found it makes more sense to do brioche continental style though, and I’m glad I made myself learn continental. This video is awesome and I will revisit the next time I venture into brioche (perhaps to do this very shawl!)

Even allowing for the fact that you normally knit continental style, brioche looks like a stitch that is better suited to continental style knitters than English. That said, there are other stitches where I think the opposite is true. EDIT: 9 months later: my continental knitting is now at the stage where I can do a somewhat wobbly two colour brioche (I have knitted in an English style for decades). With some more practice, I may even be in a position to consider a project with brioche in it. (I didn't try the English version, that looked too slow and fiddly for my tastes.)
