The NBA has done a fine job of "cleaning up the game". This would never happen in the modern day NBA, and they've accomplished this simply by incurring massive fines for the slightest misconduct. It borders on egregious, but it's so effective that teammates flock to prevent altercations because they know the consequence both financially and on the court outweighs whatever benefit could come from straightening up the other dude.
