Yours is a better explainer than I am having in my current math course, However I missed much of the lesson, having fallen asleep, and would love to replay it. Only, the wordiness of your presentation is the reason I fell asleep in the first place. I will, therfore, look elsewhere for more concise presentations.

Why multiply anything? Subtract "x-y=-1" from "x+3y=11". x-x is zero, -y minus 3y is -4y, -1 minus 11 is -12. So, -4y = -12. Divide each side by -4 to get y=3.

If you subtract the second equation from the first one you then have an equation that is easy to solve. Can you substitute. I was able to do it in my head

There are more ways to solve this 2 variables and 2 equations... First way: it is easy to see with the second equation that if x - y = -1 -> x = y - 1 then substitude in the first equation x + 3y = 11 -> (y - 1) + 3y = 11 or 4y = 12 so y = 3 and x = y - 1 = 3 -1 = 2 OR y = x + 1 substituting x + 3.(x+1) = 11 so x + 3x + 3 = 11 and 4x = 11- 3 = 8 -> x = 2 and y = x + 1 = 2 + 1 = 3 Second way: substracting eq1 - eq2: (x + 3y = 11) - (x - y = - 1) -> 3y - (-y) = 11 - (-1) or 4y = 12 so y=3 OR substracting eq2 - eq1: (x - y = - 1) - (x + 3y = 11) -> x - y - x - 3y = - 1 - 11 -> - 4y = - 12 so y= 3

Subtracting the second equation from the first equation, the signs in the second equation change and we get… X + 3Y = 11 -(1) -X + Y = 1 -(2) 4Y = 12 Y = 3 Substituting to the first equation… X + 9 = 11 X = 2 X = 2 Y = 3

This is a good, straightforward practice problem using Gaussian elimination. Simply multiply the bottom equation by, -1 then add the two equations. The "x" is eliminated, enabling you to solve for "y." Back substitute "y" into either of the two original equations to solve for "x."

Elimination method 12 y = 36 or y = 36÷12, y= 3 samikaran (i) mai y = 3 value put x + 3 y = 11, x = 11-9 = 2, x = 2 and y= 3 answer
@stevenjohnson11433 ай бұрын
Elimination is the quickest way multiply the bottom by -1 creating-x+y=1adding that to the top equation get 4y=12 this happens because the x terms are opposite of each other diving 4 from both sides gets y=3 taking that to either of the original equations I will select the both x-3=-1 adding 3 to both sides gets x=2 going to top equation and plugging both values in it does indeed check x=2y=3is correct
@gillianrolland43053 ай бұрын
Why multiply? Quicker and simpler to subtract bottom equation from top and eliminate x
@stevenjohnson11433 ай бұрын
@@gillianrolland4305 because if you at the second equation it reads x-y=-1 adding both equations as stated gets 2x+2y=10 and you would eliminate either variable. The step of multiplying by -1 make the elimination possible

If 3y=11-x, by inspection we see that 3(3)+2=11. So y=3, x=2. Confirming from second equation 2-3=-1. X=2, y=3. Obviously the method using the graph is the correct one.
