Yes, I believe the Steregushchiy is an overall more capable platform than LCS, most definitely. The LCS, Freedom and Zumwalt class rank among the worst acquisition decisions in the modern era of naval research and development. All three are substantially more complex than they needed to be and more importantly, they’re all woefully under equipped for the missions they were intended to fulfill. The LCS cracked hull issues, the inability to swap out the mission modules as they were designed for essentially makes them useless in a real world conflict scenario. They would be more fitting serving in the coast guard vice the navy. My favorite though, Zumwalt, let’s create a ship that predominantly relies off two 155mm guns for a potential future conflict that will most certainly be fought over the horizon rendering them completely useless, and don’t even get me started on the costs of the ammo, $750K per round! The Steregushchiy is a well thought out corvette that was designed specifically to fulfill a need and it does exceptionally well in that capacity.

Zumwalt was de facto replacement for Iowa class, aka ship design to provide landing support. While that makes sense in theory (tbh for me making cruiser to fill that role would make even more sense), execution of hole program was shit show.

@@aleksaradojicic8114 Oh absolutely, it was built around supporting ops in the Arabian Peninsula more so than the SCS or elsewhere. I would love to see the USN resurrect the Arsenal Ship concept, 120-150 VLS cells with a deeper and more flexible VLS than the Mk-141 VLS module, capable of hot, cold and hypersonic missile launches. Hopefully, they’ll ditch the Phalanx CIWS going forward as well, nearly useless against modern and sophisticated missiles.
@monarch3335
@monarch3335 2 жыл бұрын
@@JD-dm1uj I believe the DDG(X) is ditching the phalanx for lasers or something else and it will carry 128 VLS, though it is the smaller Mk. 41 rather than a larger array. It can still fit a variety of missiles, so I don’t necessarily believe the US navy needs a newer, larger VLS. This, at least, is according to the very first announcements about the ship, planned to enter service in the 2030s.
@JD-dm1uj
@JD-dm1uj 2 жыл бұрын
@@monarch3335 Yes, they’re going with a directed energy setup, combination of lasers, though without a more expanded VLS, you’re limited to the type of munitions at your disposal, especially as it pertains to hypersonics.
@monarch3335

@@JD-dm1uj personally, I doubt hypersonic anti ship missiles can work at all simply because their own speed jams their radar. Plasma created at the leading edge blocks radar waves and prevents effective guidance, at least in my understanding. Though for other weapon types like if the US would develop a larger, more effective subsonic-supersonic transition SSM then a larger VLS would absolutely be warranted.

As you mentioned with the newer "Zaslon" radar, the 10ish corvettes built so far of this class are very different from each other, and actually belong to several different sub-classes. The lead ship, the "Steregushiy", was built when the "Redut" air defence system installed on later ships didn't yet really exist, so it only carried (and still carries) the "Kortik" close-range system for self-defence. Later ships were supposed to have the "Redut" system installed, but... The system's shipborne radar supposedly used for guiding the missiles never actually existed, so the anti-air missiles were pretty much "fire-and-forget" weapons - the only targeting information they received from the ship came from the "Furke" radar, which had numerous technical difficulties, being itself a navalized version of the Pantsir SAM radar. The makeshift solution used by the Russian Navy was to use targeting data from the "Puma" artillery fire-control radar to guide anti-air missiles, which was actually pretty good, but had obvious limitations such as its limited field of view. Knowing all this, the Navy wanted new batches of ships to come with a proper, full-fledged air defence system - and had a very Russian way of going about it. Instead of doing the logical thing and installing the existing and functional "Poliment" radar, they invested billions into the "Zaslon" system - which was at that point just a scaled-up prototype of an aircraft radar used on the Mig-31. After years in development and billions of rubles spent, and despite the Zaslon supposedly being mounted on the latest ships, it's actually not known whether it works or not, and many suspect that it's nothing more than a semi-functional mock-up with the capabilities of a 1960s-era radar. The last ships of the class commissioned into the Pacific Fleet never even tested their anti-air weapons during their sea trials. The "Aldar Zydenzhapov" corvette, completed in 2020, only ever shot at single (!) mockup targets with its naval gun (!!) before being commissioned. So while the last ships are supposed to be much more capable than their earlier counterparts of previous batches, I, for one, doubt if they're even capable of defending themselves at all. Anyways, excellent video as always, I really enjoyed this one. I have to agree that even despite their cost and technical difficulties they're probably still more useful than LCS ships. Thank you for your work and dedication! Edit: I should add perhaps that the company that made the Zaslon is currently under investigation for losing 800 million rubles' worth of prototypes, materials and confidential documentation on its other projects, so it's no wonder that the radar on the Steregushiy ships isn't performing up to expectations 🤣🤣🤣.

Going to need sources for some of this. Particularly since the latest iterations have indeed tested the naval s350 missiles, the quad packed 9m100 somewhat recently. I'm skeptical as a lot of people have an axe to grind against Russia because the american puppet state, ukraine, is apparently inviolate.

I'd like to know his sources, as I have already spotted total errors in his post. The zaslon radar suite on these corvettes are not at all related to the zaslon radar on the mig-31 fighter. They are also completely functional and according to ruskie MOD it is a very effective system, tho expensive for a vessel of such displacement.

@@jamesmandahl444 With the amount of anti russian garbage floating around it seems that one would need a few grains of salt with everything written. The fact is its an effective ship and is a huge improvement on what the Russian navy had. In addition the long lead times of building ships get them done sort it out is not unheard of. Given the choice Grisha versus Stereguschey .... its a no brainer.

6:08 not meaning to be rude in any way but I think you are incorrect here. At least with the latest iteration of this corvette, it is capable of using the new Otvet anti submarine missile. What is neat about it is that it is supersonic and has a range i think of about fifty klicks. As a result it can cover the distance very quickly and thereby release the homing torpedo payload close to the suspected location of the enemy submarine. Great show btw. Love the focus on naval kit from around the world.

@commie5211
@commie5211 2 жыл бұрын
Different role and class, 052D's main role is to provide aerial air defense for the entire fleet. 22350 is heavily armed towards attack, with minimal air defense capabilities. Who the fuck put kalibr and zircon on a frigate? even though 22350 is quite large for a frigate. What we can see is. Russia has the weapon systems but lack of ship building capabilities(left that in Ukraine), so they had to put it on a smaller ship. Consider 22350 is the largest ship they built since the soviet union collapse.

@@redblueyankee8343 Russian ships were armed under a very "different" philosophy. "If anybody attack me, i am gonna shoot all my super deadly weapons together towards the enemy ship. I might not survive, but i can make sure my enemy will go down to hell with me, my ship is smaller and cheaper, so i won the trade." I would not be surprised if Russia put nuclear war heads on their antiship missles and launch it from a corvette. They are not even interested in defense. On the other hands, the Chinese navy focus on securing the important trade routes, and choke points. So they are more towards defense capabilities, just like the US navy in some prespective.

Depth charges are old news. Modern ASW warships tend to be fitted with ASW rockets. These are launched at the approximate location of a sub surface contact which then release an acoustic torpedo into the water to search for the target on it's own. They can also launch such torpedos directly, or do so using ship-borne helicopters in the ASW role.
