Remember that the Elacs are half the price chaper and sometimes go on sale as low as 150. USD and the Elacs are a very pleasant speaker for your ears, it is warm and detailed, great for long listening sessions!

The 6.2's have a great clear voice. The KEF's paint a more immersive and realistic image which brings your ear to each instrument rather than forcing the notes on you.

Wow what a difference. I think the lower end amp makes the Elac more enjoyable and the higher end speakers less impressive. With this amp, I would not be able to justify the cost of higher end speakers. Star Wars is really giving this amp a work out. The lack of headroom is apparent with dynamics suffering.

Im a Dyn owner but the initial obsession over the kef remaind for the last 5 years mostly because the High end audiio market is non existent here. I love the Dyns powered by Hegel H300. Very revealing comparison. Each impressive for itselve. I saved a lot on speakers because I keep enjoying my Dynaudio 1.3 mk 2. When I bougt them back in 1998 I listen to them with my cheap Yamaha Surround-Receiver and also a Burmester combo for five figures. So I was aware what they will be capable of when I am able to get a better system. And boy do they show. At least for my taste.

I was hesitating between the Elacs and the Kef but now I'm sure I'll get the Elacs. Much more what I expect from speakers, that they have a full range of definition and not sacrifying midrange. Elacs give us the impression to listen to music not to speakers interpeting music. It's strange that not everybody see (hear) that in the comments. This shows that we have all different auditive expectations.

Compare 6:35 to 7:35 to 8:35 and listen for the kettle drum. To me the KEF's do an outstanding job of bringing out the kettle drums which show their ability to articulate better in that frequency range. Overall, and in my opinion, I find the Elac's more pleasing to my ear because they have a bit of that "scooped mids" that I prefer with highs that won't burn the ear after extended listening. I like them all but prefer the Elac's which is why I own a pair myself.

Based only on this, it seems to me that the Dynaudio is the most balanced one for home listening; it seems to be fairly detailed with good bass, treble and mids balance. The LS50 appears to get more detail out of the mix but will probably be a bit fatiguing over time; I have little doubts however that it would be the best speaker for professional use and for mixing. The Elacs to be honest did not amaze me at all in comparison with the other two. That being said we should of course take into account the price difference so I suppose it has good value for money. Thanks for the video!

Great test Thomas thank you -to me the ELAC bottom end and mid range sounds good but the highs sound a bit muddy. The KEF has a beautiful mid and top end while the Dynaudio has the best of both worlds and is clearly the best speaker (and it should be for the price). The choice between the KEF and ELAC is more difficult to pick a winner as it more depends on the sound you prefer-I myself think that the KEFs with a good Sub would be a good choice.

Fantastic job, and with proper (AKG) headphones you can really hear the difference. I am most impressed by the Elac's, they seem to have everything, and sound just as good as the famous LS50's. This is exactly how a online speaker comparison should be, thanks for your ecellent work. However, I'm a bit late in viewing this, there is likely a whole new generation of bookshelf speakers eg the KEF Meta. Do you have a newer video for the same type/price of speaker ?

I purchased the elacs based on what I heard in this demo. They just had this "weight" on the snare drum and I thought those were the speakers for me. I was disappointed however, after comparing them to my beloved Sony SS-CS3 floor standers. I see you like comparing bookshelf speakers but the Sony floor standing speakers are the same price for the pair as the bookshelf Elacs. The Elacs sound thin and restricted. My budget setup is: Sony UDP-800 bluray player doing the decoding and converting all 44 KHz pcm to 88 KHz; Harman Kardon 1710S home theater receiver; Sony SS-CS3 core series floor standing speakers; Sony SACS9 subwoofer(if used, crossed over at 80 Hz). This receiver and speakers combo is a perfect match.

Thanks for Sharing Dimitar. What you have is real life experience and it will help others in making decisions. I just made a video on sound demo and it's problem. I think there are a few possible reasons why you are experiencing this, 1) I used a proper stereo integrated amp in the demo and it had enough power to drive the Elac. AV receiver for me, the power ratings are misleading. 2)The expectations is incorrect. A floor standing speaker should have better bass response compare to a bookshelf. I almost got the SSCS3 myself. Not expensive and it has the same sound signature as the SS5.

Very well done. The Elac sounds the most "correct". The Kef sounds too metallic in many areas but also overdamped and choked in the overtones. The Dynaudio has a plump, bloated bottom end that is overly smooth with excessive overhang and smearing of the timing.

Hey Thomas. Love your videos - very educational and entertaining. Concerning this budget front end, how would this compare to say the average mass market AVR, like a 100w Denon for instance? I just wanted to get a point of reference. Would such an AVR be a step up from what you have here? I’m thinking of getting the Elac Debut 2.0 floorstanding set as mains for HT, but also want great 2-channel music output. I’m wondering if such an AVR will bring plenty of clean power in a medium room at a performance comparable to your demo system. Thoughts?

Thanks for this 2nd pass. Maybe I should start out by stating what I'm using. This is played via a Roku3 connected HDMI to a Sony STR-DN850 receiver, then through Polk Audio Model 40 series II speakers. I tried with and without my modified center channel which contains my crossover, 2 Peerless Tympany 5.25 mid bass drivers and the original Sony soft dome tweeter. I'm disclosing this because the equipment you're testing as well as the amplifiers used in each video, cost considerably more than what I'm using. Having said that, I find the 1st track is relatively close for me. All 3 speakers are totally liveable. When you're playing Last Xmas, the difference becomes significant to comment. The Elac is a good all around speaker. I'm sure if I was there the detail, balance, and depth would become more apparent. The KEF LS50 high frequency emphasis is significant in hearing her voice. There's actually too much sibilance with those speakers. The Dynaudio speakers bring forth a better balance here. The Star Wars cut further distinguishes the character of each speaker. Again, no real losers but the Dynaudio is fuller, richer, a cleaner image than either of the other two. The KEF loves triangles, doesn't it? I think room acoustics could be a deal killer with the KEF. If there were a lot of soft window treatments, soft furniture, then perhaps that high end could be constrained. One little nit-pick, when the Star Wars track started, it sounded like you were adjusting levels. A moment of somewhat quieter than normalized level. Thanks again. You do a good job in your personal reviews.
@ThomasAndStereo
@ThomasAndStereo 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I must have adjusted the Star wars track in the beginning. I remember it was getting late when I did the recording so I probably instinctively lowered the volume. The KEF have a lot of sibilance but partly is due to me driving the whole system with a Class D setup,. Once you pair it with the Mcintosh and the ifi tube2, it's pretty good. Thinking back, I should have done it that way when I did the sound recording because the Elac and KEF are way better with the mcintosh. Their top end is a bit bright with the Bel Canto. The Dyn however, works well with anything. Thanks for the feedback.

For my ear, B6.2: Bright treble, loudest but not clearest bass, voice was okay. KEF: softer treble, quieter bass, good voice. The 160: Clearest voice, clean bass, soft but crisp treble. I don't know why, but I hear more things from the Dynaudio 160 than the other two. Certain things pop out, and I go, "Hmmmm." It forces me to go back to the listen to KEF and ELAC where they muted or drowned out. The Dynaudio 160 won this for sure... I am coming in somewhat blind, and without reading the comments. I wonder if there is any legal issues if I did that. On youtube, what happen is the composer makes a claim against my video and all monetary compensation goes to them so I assume it's ok on youtube. Yeah, didn´t thought about that... but there are probably legal issues involved. I suggested it cuz there is a great KZbin channel about bluetooth speakers called the clavinetjunkie which does these comparisons from time to time. Perhaps using music from creative commons labels or composers not under copyright could be a solution. I cannot offer any tittles right now cuz i listen mostly electronic music but I´m sure someone in your audience knows a few good tracks of the same musical style under creative commons

Are there any non concentric speakers that are close to the KEF with good off axis response.

If people listen to this on a phone you just can't tell. the ls50 isn't bad but it does that ahhhhh ! thing, just a little shrill that makes you go F&*^^&* mid song. the elac's i get as a budget speaker but man, with the $499 sales on martin logan motion 15s spend the extra on those if you're looking at elac and or a nice used B&W 600 series. what's wrong with the elac is very apparent A+B testing as you can hear here

the high frequencies sounds better with the KEF , but overall the Dynaudio sounds the best . Did you got the chance to audition the Wharfedale diamond 225 ? Can I have your thought about them ? I am using Definitive technology Promonitor 1000 with Klipsch sub and thinking to get a good pair of Bookshelf speakers Thanks

To me the Elac sounded the best overall, the instrument separation in the Star Wars theme was really impressive and for a speaker of it's price range it seems really good and most clear in the vocals as well but i think they may be more fatiguing compared to the others because the treble seems more energetic and airy. The KEF was disappointing and to me it was a really tight fight between the Dynaudio and the KEF for last place

The comments are very funny. To me, it sounds like everyone is listening to completely different presentations. Certainly not hearing what I'm hearing! Lol. I think each is hearing their own preconceptions. I've never heard any of these speakers before(still haven't), but no one here can even agree on dynamic presentation let alone brightness, lol. Thanks for the demo. It showed me that if nothing else, the English language is broken. Evidently, the tower of Babel is still functioning very well, thank you very much...

Andrew Jones some how does it right. I still miss my Pioneer FS speakers or even Book shelves .. To my ears they sounded better than SVS Primes ( I think I just like warmer sound ) . I am going back to his designed speakers with Elacs now :)

The Elac's treble sounded "hot" to me, the KEF's were smooth, and the Dynaudios were the best balanced. Someone earlier mentioned you'd be upgrading the Elacs in a couple years for something better, and I agree. Pay me now or pay me later, says the high end.

Please put the minuts list in the video comments and not covering 1/3 of the screen :( Nice comparation in any case, I doubt between KEF and Elac. Are the levels normalized? I think the KEF sounds lower than the others.

An Interesting comparison would be the Dynaudio Emit M20 vs the Elac Debut 6.2 (the Dynaudio M20 at $999 is still much more expensive but half that of Evoke models and 1/3 f the Focus)

So I listened again on my custom single full-range driver speakers and the Dynaudio 160 definitely sounds the most laid back, KEF most forward, and the Elac most balanced at this level. It is my suspicion that the 160 like many of the ATC speakers will really come alive at the louder level and more watts. Thomas I almost think that you had a purpose in comparing these three, they all have their strengths. The Dynaudio Focus 110 is a whole other beast with the speed of a horn with it small form factor, top of the line tweeters, and 3-inch driver coils.

I like the highs on kef. On 5:14 the guitar next to her voice is so clear “massaging my ears” while if you go back to Elack at 4:13 her voice is covering that nice sparkling notes from the guitar. I think Kef is a clear winner of the two . am using senhuser Hd 598 and Fiio E10 to listen. . . Now considering the price of course I would buy the ELAC . Also Elac would be better for movies as voices are much Defined, fuller and forward.

I had Kef R100 and Kef Q300, i heard kef ls 50 in a Shop, they are outstanding but if i had too choose i would buy the R100 again, its almost good as ls50 but 500€ cheaper, but its not a cheap Speaker is very well processed and the sound is almost as good s the ls50. If you want a little more bass then go get the R300 is still 200€ Cheaper then ls50 but the heights are better then the ls50 and the same bass

In terms of tone and timber, the Elacs sounded the most realistic to actual instruments closely followed by Dynaudio. The Dynaudios excelled at soundstage width, depth and imaging with the Elacs a close second. The Kef was never in the game to my ears..wrong timber and poor imaging and not a great soundstage. Based on the price to performance ratio, the Elacs win.

You have proven, at least in this comparison, that there is no BEST. They are all good and have strong and weak points. They all win and lose depending on the specific category one wants to focus on. And then there is the price or value to consider as well as aesthetics. The KEF does impress but I am not a fan of how it looks. I could live with the Elac but the Dynaudio is simply gorgeous. That was a great demo. May I offer a suggestion? IF you could play a few seconds of the exact same passage through each speaker as well as the longer samples that you had in this video, that would be very helpful. Rapidly switching between the speakers would really enhance the ability to hear differences. I know we can do that on our end by marking the time for each passage and using the slider control to play a specific sample, but the time delay in manipulating the cursor to the right spot on the video can be a little problematic. Thanks for a great job is putting this video together. Very helpful as well as entertaining.

Thanks for the suggestion,. In the comment section, if you type the time, it will jump to the exact time where you want to go. You will see the time becomes a hyper link, I usually do it in the description box. That way, you can specify where exactly you want to jump to.

What’s evident is the ls50 has the smallest sound stage vs the elac however it’s a harder speaker to drive the Dynaudio seems to be the most revealing but least coherent. The elac is lively. I would love to see a 3 way against the elac, ls50 and tune tot. Three qualities that are evolutionary of speaker design elac (fun) ls50 (accurate) tune tot (transparent). It cost so much to go from fun to transparent:(.
