If this is a British military drill then the term " weapon" would be used.

It's funny with terminology, like I know a load of civilian shooters who'd have a dicky fit if turned up at a gun club calling rifles 'weapons' (unless they were also ex forces).

Absolutely. We come across the problem frequently when training civilians on military weapons, hence firearm!
