Honestly, the only people in crossfit who I've ever heard talk about how great they are is the people at HQ. I've been to loads of different crossfit gyms and have met lots of people in the sport and that's not really the attitude that I see most prevalent. Most people are just regular people who want to workout and enjoy the community aspect of it to keep them motivated. I will agree with him that those at HQ do talk up the sport and say how much better they are than everyone else and I hate that attitude.

Steroids In CrossFit= common. You have to to help recovery time for all those terribly executed lifts....
@alantaylor6691
@alantaylor6691 4 жыл бұрын
Steroids do help recovery time, as well as greatly increasing muscle mass regardless of training. As well as lowering fat. Does quite a few things lol. There was a study. Those who took steroids but didn't weightlift gained more muscle mass than those who weightlifted but didn't take steroids. So it is a myth that steroids are only of benefit when steroids are incorportated with increased training load.

It's been obvious to me and many others that this is protocol in ANY sport, but the average American is still easily fooled into thinking its possible to reach this level and remain competitive year after year. I think it gives younger teens a false impression of what is real and what they should aspire to. The photo at 9:23 tells anyone who knows the subject all they need to know. (Compare them to U.S. Olympic decathletes, gymnasts, or weightlifters in the same weight classes who are subject to random no-notice testing . . . the contrast will not require a pharmacology or exercise-science Ph.D to interpret . . . .) That of course does not mean that thousands of people "doing" CrossFit are not clean as a whistle, getting enormously fitter, and having a great time doing it. It should be possible to hold two thoughts simultaneously (a) the vast majority of amateur CrossFit enthusiasts are clean athletes who work their butts off and vastly improve their fitness, and (b) the elite levels of CrossFit competition are just as rife with PED use as any other poorly-tested sport with lots of fame or fortune at stake.
@BernhardKohli
@BernhardKohli 6 жыл бұрын
A lot less money still at stake in CF than elsewhere. The honor code is quite strong - anyone who gets caught is completely ostracized; just see how much (or little) anyone has been referring to the athletes who got caught (R. Gerard, etc.). They are "done" and I don't think that is something many athletes would risk. Also, if you worked out 8 hours a day every day like Mat Fraser does, you'd probably be surprised how much muscle mass you could gain. I did Combat Sports, went to regular gyms, etc. for 2 decades, etc. and never really gained much muscle mass. I've been doing CF for 2 years and gained around 4kg of muscle mass, so I do think that it is an effective training regimen. Not saying no one is using PEDs but that the % is probably a lot lower than a guy who is earning his money coaching athletes to cheat would like you to believe.

@GPR100
@GPR100 4 жыл бұрын
@@mrdune5479 Indeed. I feel like a lot of CF'ers who defend the clean claims tend to disregard the fact that lifting, circuit training, speed work, etc. has diminishing returns as you continue to build and excel. Look at a dude like Froning, who came into CF competition extremely lean & strong in 2010, placing 2nd. It's not like the dude had tons of room to grow, yet he seems to get more ripped and gained noticeable amounts of lean muscle mass for the better part of a decade. Test starts dropping when you near 30, but somehow guys are peaking through that without PEDs? Also, I don't buy into the 'we don't accept that, we shame cheaters.' So do cyclists who are doping when their fellow cyclists get caught - because it keeps up the facade that the person who was caught is the exception rather than the rule in their sport. It's self preservation, not outstanding moral fortitude.

Honestly, is anyone surprised. The Olympics keep catching a "few" athletes every Olympics, a lot more certainly do not get caught. I mean, these people pretty much all train at the same level, so you end up with better genetics being the difference maker AND steroids. So if people on drugs are not finishing number one, are we seriously considering those who finish above are clean? Let's not forget... 7 Tour de France wins and he never got caught, as well as his teammates.
@alantaylor6691
@alantaylor6691 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. It's possible for naturals who are genetic freaks to COMPETE at the elite level. But not medal. Reason is that the difference in genetic advantage between medalists is not going to see a performance differential anywhere near as large as the performance differential from doping. If you have a Michael Jordan of sprinting competing, his genetic advantage may give him say a 0.5% performance advantage over the 5th best sprinter. However the performance advantage one gains from doping is a great deal more than 0.5%. More like 10%. So even if the Michael Jordan of sprinting does everything everyone else is doing but doping, he still won't medal. Take Usain Bolt, which probably is the Michael Jordan of sprinting. If he wasn't doping, he may be able to make the Olympics, but probably wouldn't reach the Quarter Finals, his PR probably wouldn't be under 10 seconds. Doping makes a very big difference in performance and that's a fact. Magnitudes more than poor vs good diet, we're not talking marginal gains. Look at that study, those who took steroids but didn't weightlift gained more muscle than those who weightlifted but didn't take steroids. Come on! You won't get that result from poor to excellent diet. Steroids are artificial substances that are super-powerful because they're artificial. Lance Armstrong was indeed the genetic best of that era (as per Tyler Hamilton), however without doping he was in the middle of the International Pro field. There are about 400 International Pros. He started doping due to frustration at not being able to compete with those cyclists at the top of the International Pro field. And this, the most genetically gifted GC rider of that era.

Regarding Lance Armstrong still winning due to it being an even playing field, listen to Tyler Hamilton. If you're interested I can find the lecture. He said it wasn't an even playing field doping-wise (even though the other teams also doped) and goes into detail why. Having said that, he acknowledges Armstrong was still the best GC talent of the era, although with an even doping field would have won a couple but not 7. From everything I've studied of cycling and Armstrong I agree with him, Hamliton is the only Armstrong teammate that has truly disregarded the Omerta.

You need to understand that there are many more categories of PEDs besides anabolic steroids, and also that anabolic steroids have many beneficial effects besides muscle growth. Did Lance Armstrong have an impressive physique? Not by my standards or by bodybuilding steroids. Stimulants, blood doping agents that increase oxygen availability, mild anabolics that increase neural power without muscle growth, peptides that increase the rate of tendon and ligament repair, etc The list goes on and on. At the elite level of athletics, PEDs are just part of the game.

Went to a dinner party with a couple buddies I hadn’t seen in years. We had a lot to catch up on. One of them had been doing CrossFit. Guess what we, or should I say he, talked about most of the time? You guessed it. CrossFit. I haven’t seen this guy in 8 or so years and there we were talking about CrossFit 👎. It seemed he was almost obsessively talking about it when there were so many other conversation points we could have visited. You’re not automatically cool cause you do CrossFit. And, no, nobody wants to hear you talk about it. It robbed his identity.

Fascinating interview. If what he's saying is true, then the implications for the sport at the elite level are enormous. Having said that, it's not been my experience that CrossFitters...from top to bottom...spout the crap about the sport that Mr. Romano insists they're spouting. I'm not saying he's biased; maybe he comes in contact with a sizeable number of doofuses. What I have seen from the start...and certainly over the past two years...is that athletes/participants in 'other sports based on the movement of weights' seem to take umbrage at the very existence of CrossFit. Never quite understood this, but there ya go. Admittedly, though I love the unique sense of community at the grassroots level, I'm only really interested in the sport at the elite level. (I'm not a participant.) So do I care if PEDs are being used by athletes at the Games? Nope. I love watching these guys and gals do what they do. And I think Mr. Romano says it best when he declares that PEDs are only one tool amongst many in the toolbox for the elite athlete. It'll be interesting to see how CrossFit deals with drugs moving forward.

I think it's important to keep in mind that this is a report on the activities of high level professional athletes that are competing on a worldwide stage for big dollars (the sport of Crossfit)! This should not, and I don't believe is, an indictment of the training protocol/fitness regimen of Crossfit; the programming that has made so many of us leaner, faster, stronger, healthier, happier versions of ourselves. I think this is more than valid but it should be well understood that MAJORITY of crossfitters are not training for the games or even regionals and do not risk injury during training. And with proper nutrition and coaching can become elite athletes, however maybe not games worthy without a little help, but if you are close and the reward is worth the risk, the choice is yours. Don't misguide potential athletes or current ones. Every sport has its negatives, running has the most injuries of every sport and most of us do it everyday.

When listening to this, remember the context. Mr. Romano has a vested interest in the use of PEDs and has used PEDs. They are his life, and his business. This is how he makes his living. From what he says he does not understand the concept and methodology of CrossFit, has not looked in detail at how the athletes train or recover, and has not looked at the sphere of competition within the sport. From this view, I would be highly sceptical of anything he says.

+Max Willson It seems that as soon as there's something on the line (i.e. money, awards, bragging rights), some folks will choose PEDs. I don't care if athletes use steroids, but I do care if they're lying about it or using it to sell something. Moreover, I think in certain areas it should be banned because of the unfair advantage it gives an athlete. In CrossFit, not everyone has the money, access or guidance for using PEDs, so it should be banned. If everyone had access, then I think the playing field might be more fair.

+diesel828 Well, in a lot of countries it's still illegal to use the drugs a lot of athletes use so I can understand why they lie about it. The better option would be to just not talk about it. Also the banning thing wouldn't work. It's already prohibited in many sports yet it's an open secret that in most sports (tested or not) there are still drugs involved.

I've been doing crossfit since 2013 and have never ran across a normal everyday crossfiter who brags or says that they are superior because of crossfit.
