@@duke_hugo Buckner's cheating with Australia can be easily seen . It looked like Australia just bought Buckner and he was simply officiating against Indian team. Buckner was racist, he always fucked with sub continental teams or other players who's origin was in asia. It's simple as that. And in terms of india accepting drs later, BCCI wanted drs to become less buggy and better before accepting it. And when drs became better BCCI accepted it.

Nick and Gabe, Steve Bucknor had a long career. He did make some truly shocking decisions, the highlight (or low light in this case!) being India's tour of Australia in 2007-08. I would say he had a long career, mostly distinguished, but had its fair share (and a bit more) of blunders, some of them unfortunately high profile. They show the *egregiously* bad ones in such videos, not the many good calls! Believe it or not, the Indian team was so pissed during their 2007 tour to Australia, that they threatened to *boycott their 4 test match series after the second test* unless he was removed. It was a major controversy at that time (there were other issues as well)! Some of the other commenters here say that he reserved his bad decisions for India -- I don't quite agree *fully* . People don't talk about his mistakes that were in India's favor as well (and there were a few, believe it or not!). Some of his shockers were more *high profile and consequential* I guess -- Sydney test that arguably decided the outcome of the series (you saw Dravid and Symonds in the video), decisions against Sachin Tendulkar. But even during that series, he gave both Tendulkar and Laxman *not out* for pretty adjacent LBWs in the same Sydney test match. *To summarize, umpiring in cricket is hard! And Bucknor didn't particularly help his cause either.*
@daveborder7751
@daveborder7751 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly-how many mistakes do players make every game & yet the umpire makes one or two in a series & the players & certain fans are crying the blues. He was a top level umpire for 20 odd years-he didn't umpire so many world cup finals & big matches for no reason. Also people should remember he was probably the only umpire who would have insisted Pakistan not get away with their blatant time wasting at Karachi in 2000-which led to probably the most memorable finish in test history.

There has long been one piece of advice all cricketers get told at least once in their careers. In the long run, the bad decisions ALWAYS even themselves out. One day, you will edge one and be given not out, the next you will miss it, and be given out. Swings and roundabouts, rub of the green, luck floats around both good and bad. The perfect example of this is in this very video. Shane Warne got an lbw that was clearly not out, but then he denied one that was hitting middle stump halfway up. The reason Bucknor is so heavily thought of a bad umpire is because many, many Indian fans felt he was unfair against them deliberately, bordering racist against them. And, due to the sheer numbers of Indian fans compared to everyone else, it seems a majority opinion. However, no matter how good an umpire is seen to be, before DRS came in you could make a video like this about EVERY umpire that has had any sort of career. They are human, and make mistakes. It’s a part of the game, and always will be.

These umpires were good umpires. In my opinion Dicky Bird was the best umpire, and guess what? He was nearly as quirky as Billy Bowden, yet, I don't know anyone who does not love Dicky Bird. They all had good eyes and good judgement, they could not have risen to the level of ICC umpire if they did not. Yes they made blunders, and we were all upset at the time that they made the blunder. Gabe said that he should be embarrassed. I am sure that he was, when he sat down to the icc review of his performance post match and was shown his mistakes, I don't think that there is any doubt of that. But, the real question is, did any decision that they ever made have the smell of bias on it, were they at all times impartial? And, speaking for myself, I never doubted that they were clean. These men are judged more savagely than ever they judged. They make mistakes, so what? They are human. They make less mistakes than their piers, or their piers would have been given that test to umpire. It is as simple as that.

It is incredible how one or two poor matches can hurt an umpire-remember BC Cooray in 2001 with the Sri Lanka vs England series-he had been a very highly regarded umpire for over 20 years, yet just one bad test along with his umpiring partner in that series cost him his umpiring career-with ridiculous headlines such as Cooray bats for England. The one where it hits his butt: there is actually a rule interpretation you might not be thinking about. Normally when adjudicating lbw, the ball needs to pitch in line with the stumps or on the the off side, then it needs to hit the batsman in line with the stumps, and be judged to be going on to hit them. However, if the batsman doesn't play at the ball (holds the bat out of the way), that second condition is different. It doesn't need to hit in line with the stumps. It can hit outside the line and if it's judged to be going on to hit the stumps, then it can be given out. The butt one... well, it's not the best example of a good call. It's really hard to say, but Bucknor has obviously thought the ball was going to spin back a large distance.

But a sense of conclusion was reached when Bucknor, who had a history of gaffes with India, admitted that he had indeed given Tendulkar wrongly at least on two occasions -- at Gabba in 2003 and at Eden Gardens in 2005. "Tendulkar was given out on two different occasions when those were mistake

Sorry guys for my inappropriate comment... DRS was brought in for these kind of decisions, not just by Bucknor but all umpires because they all make bad decisions sometimes which can make the difference between winning and losing... and there's a lot of money involved, not to mention national pride in cricket these days.

If it is a deliberate leave by the batsman the rule on the off side that the impact has to in line with the stumps is waived. The Umpire decides however if it was a deliberate leave by the batsman.

I remember as a kid I used to watch cricket just to watch sachin and dravid bat and there was this man the myth the legend steve bucknor i don't know how many times he's given sachin out when he was in his 90s. I remember one match it was Bucknor's 100th test match i think and before the match sachne was the only person to wish him on his 100th match and he gave him out a 'wrong decision' man i hated this guy.

It's true Umpiring isn't easy. But I still remember that Sydney Test, 10 wrong decisions, 9 went against IND (causing IND to lose, a Draw would've felt better) & I think 8 of those came from Bucknor.

I read somewhere that the average number of balls pitched in a baseball match is 147. a cricketing umpire has to look forward to 2,500 ball over the coming 5 days. And in these days of international umpires, where an umpire is not allowed to umpire his own nation he has ubba flight commitments. He can be in new zealand today umpiring a match and expected to be in london in three days to umpire another intense battle of wills over another five days. We should expect umpiring of the highest standard in test match cricket. It is the high bar of cricket. but, conversely we also should be sympathetic to the demands on these human beings. You try standing there for five days, watching every ball, with your wife hollering at you on your mobile when you get back to your hotel room, living out of a suitcase for months on end. man, cut them a bit of slack.

Ok, yeah, Bucknor made a lot of bad calls late in his career, but Billy Bowden was a top umpire, you seem to be ragging on him mainly because of his crooked finger, which was because of arthritis rather than an attempt to be cool or have a trademark.

With the availability of DRS there is now far fewer reasons for 'neutral' umpires than was the case. Under Covid restrictions there were English umpires standing throughout the International schedule in England this summer; the standard was excellent and no concerns from the visiting teams. Michael Gough in particular stood out as being absolutely top-class, reviews on his decisions were simply wasted reviews.

Nick Gabe have read the other comment. If a batter doesnt play a shot and the ball is outside the line of the stumps the umpire can still give the player out if it would have hit the stumps in the umpires opinion. Nick it is good that you were going to do research.
