Thank you for sharing his story. I searched for this so many years later because I was telling someone else about this video. I saw him just about everyday for years and he was always respectful through every interaction I had with him.

Shame.. I saw this guy everyday practically, and as my wife also worked with beads, she told me how he used on one necklace some very expensive glass beads. He wasn't in it for the money, as much as the art. He got by. Sometimes he looked very wasted, standing in the crazy hot sun. We spoke and waved and bought stuff. He was part of the scenery, the type of guy who ends up as a cutaway in a Cape Town documentary - a tourism thing, a sight. Like Louis who stood just up the road at the stadium turning to Obz and who also died recently - he took smack. You wonder about their story, but the sense of pain meant that you didn't want to delve too much. Thanks for filling in the spaces for us. It is very moving. xx

Wow, thanks so much for documenting this story. I remember this man on my many trips through Rondebosch. Youth, in fact everybody, can learn so much from Steven's life story. He sounds like an interesting person. It's a pity that his story ended so soon.

This is a really dignified story-telling I used to drive past the 'bead guy' may he rest in peace.

This video is amazing, I used to walk past this man everyday and never realised how a bit of consideration could have gone a long way :/

I would always give whatever I had to this gentleman on the way home from work. I'm glad I finally got to know about the person he was. RIP Steve, it was a pleasure to meet you even though we never spoke.

I once watched him give biscuits that he was selling to some labourers on the back of a bakkie because they pleaded with him that they looked so good.

sorry, you most probably know and that i only answer you now 9 years later but I was just watching the video again, he was a great person hey and i still miss him every day, i realise it is many years later now , but Rodney also died a few years after Stepehen, it is quite scary if you think back of those Greenmarket Square days when we were all young just how few of us are left ....
