Ever since I heard the Copperhead Road album back in the late 80's, I have been a fan of Steve Earle. Some of the Stories told through his music in is subsequent albums is second to none in my eyes. Always like the song, "The Devils Right Hand" and respect his view on the perception of the no longer being a pro gun related song.

I love this song. Its author is entitled to his views......and whilst I am ambivalent on the whole gun control thing the wisdom of this song rings true. I grew up in a place where guns and knives were carried regularly......and its very easy to fuck up badly when a weapon is readily available.

While I disagree with his stance on gun control, this is a great song and I'd put Steve Earle up in the top ten songwriters of all time.
@k.g.alatore3553 жыл бұрын
I don't think he has a solid stance on gun control except that gun culture in the U.S. is ridiculous (which it is), and that it's not a good idea for him to have a gun in his possession considering he and his now-deceased son were both drug addicts.
@RockandrollNegro Жыл бұрын
Yes, America gained its independence through mean tweets and loud insults. Gun culture isn't "out of control" unless you're the one that wants to control it. The word for people like you is "tyrant." Regarding Steve Earle, as a drug user and felon he's not legally able to own a gun, period, so his opinion on gun control in America is about as useless as a European's.

This is the beauty, the pure beauty of songs that stand the test of time... they mean what the author meant them to be... but they take on so much more over time! Today... The Devil's Right Hand could refer to alcohol and alcoholism, or war (even gun control, regardless if that was not it's intention originally)... it could mean the creation of disease and Covid! This song and it's lyrics reflect the badness in life... if we let it... But what this song truly does, is helps us to open our minds to change and make... THAT... difference! Steve.. hope you are well, that your family and fellow country people are well also! And to everyone else... stay safe... stay well... and if you believe in something different... respect the beliefs of others! Life is AWESOME... let's all make it better!

This song has always described to me what a gun is. Having been shot in the face as a 12 year old boy, I learned the hard way at a young age.
@darwinhartl71864 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about your incident. I wasn't shot but had my face ripped open in a nasty sledding accident at the age of 6. They patched me up to the tune of about 170 stitches ( inside and out ). But only after being driven to the local doctor's office and then raced to the hospital by my dad and his hired man. I think I might have taken 10 years off my dad's lifeline that cold-ass overcast winter day. I never passed out 'till they put the IV in my arm. The pain was inexplicable and I looked like a monster after I got home. (my family was told to keep mirrors away from me but eventually I saw one.) " I look like a monster - how can you all stand to look at me " were my exact words. I'm sixty now & can still remember it like it was yesterday. Bruce, I know it's been a couple years since you posted but have you felt with your head injury that you can 'kinda tell what people are thinking ? Not saying I can read minds but maybe it's just my experienced view of human nature and mortal tactics. Anyway, again sorry to read about your deal. If you should see this please reach out and reply or email me at darwin.hartl@gmail.com. Nobody should have to go through what you did at that age. May God bless you and protect you all the rest of your days ( and after-life ). I'm guessing he or she has. Thanks for your post, even tho' I read it 2 years too late. I thought I had it rough but doesn't really compare to you. Take care buddy !

@darwinhartl71864 жыл бұрын
Sorry Steve & Dukes. I meant to say - Should Kelley ever need a little break I would consider it an HONOR to cover for him. I know Mr. Earle knows a million good bass players but would never find one more loyal and dedicated to the cause than me. Plus I pride myself in being a hard working as well as experienced musician having played with the phenomenal Craig Erickson in No Surf years ago. Also played with Bill Nix, Doug Bright, Bruce Stanley, ( RIP brother ) Paul Swineheart, Jerry, Zach and Cory Scott with the Merles and Nix-Bright band from the Cedar Rapids area. Also did a gig with Dick Prall, Brook Hoover and Bill Neff. ( not exactly slackers in their own right ) One of my first gigs was with Steve Lawrence / Hostage in Anamosa. ( last I knew Doug was playing with Hostage ) Headed to Duluth in '82 to play with SASS - a band out of the Duluth / Superior area booked by GMA out of the Twin Cities. Wasn't afraid to take a chance then and not afraid to now. Steve, Eleanor and Chris - GIVE ME A CALL !!! I can play a little upright bass but have never owned one. Also, I could get my Tuba chops back for a little "Band" tribute. I still watch "The Last Waltz" every once in a while when I have the time. Also played contra bass bugle with the Emerald Knights Drum & Bugle corps in '76 and '77. Oh well - this might all be for naught but I had to try. God bless you all - Ya' all have brought me more happiness than you realize but a "dream come true" would be a call from any of you. 319-899-8137 See you at the Englert !! I only wish & pray for the best for ALL of you - my OLD FRIENDS - you ALL shine like diamonds in my humble and common life.

I think it's one of the best gun-centric songs ever written, honestly. I definitely get where Steve's coming from with the experience of balancing out his life after beginning his recovery from heroin addiction and alcoholism combined with suddenly having the obligation of a child added onto him and how it changed his perspective on guns in his own personal life, but ultimately what anyone should take from this is that the gun is a tool that demands respect and not trivialization -- and in the wrong hands, such as the ones of the uncaring narrator, they can be your worst enemy. So as a lifelong gun-toting socialist much like Steve, I quite enjoy the dual meanings this song can carry.

No disrespect to Waylon intended but I've played dozens of both their songs ( as covers of course ) over the years and I love 'em both. But in different ways . Blue eyes by Willie was one of my Mom's favorite tunes if not her favorite. But she never got to hear much Steve because I discovered him way too late. I still tear up to this day while singing it in the shower. "some day when we meet up yonder" I might not make it to the same place as her that's why it has that effect on me. But i requested it for my daughter's wedding dance later this year & I'm just hoping I can keep it together. Anyone out there have any suggestions I would love to hear from you

A pistol is not the devil's right hand and it not saying it's evil the truth is when the pistol is in a devil's right hand is when it/they do evil! If you like guns or not train your kids and equip th with the knowledge of guns and how to properly handle,clean and store guns. By teaching and showing them how dangerous and deadly a gun can be in the hands of a fool or another kid who has let curiosity take control of their actions. So many accidents could be avoided with simply educating kids and all loved ones about guns, what they are capable of and why they must be respected by everyone but most importantly that they are not a toy!

It is definitely Morello. They have done several shows and political events together, including a the "Tell Us the Truth" tour, though this is a BBC songwriter special broadcast. The politics connect them. There are a few videos of them doing "This Land is Your Land " together, since they often do it when on the same bill.

@Alpha Werks Not really. That was more because of his drug use and unwillingness to stick to one genre. His career was not really destroyed, in any case, though he could have made more if he did the kind of music the Nashville label wanted.
@nilradem3 жыл бұрын
@Alpha Werks Also, there have been many crashes involving moonshine over the years, but he was not referencing any one story. It was inspired by a news story about an elderly woman from a moonshining family arrested for growing pot.

@Alpha Werks You seem to be someone who is not willing to learn anything. You are not the only one who is from the area and you have the story wrong. He was blackballed before he became explicitly political when he switched from MCA Nashville to MCA LA, which was his choice and all about the music. His attitude to label execs and drug use were also part of the issue. By the time he connected with Morello, he was far from mainstream Nashville, but doing very well in the Americana world. His politics have not hurt him there.

You didn't know that she had it. Great grandma who lived with us had a small Derringer she kept beside her in her rocking chair. You might ask if they were scared of anything? No. Nothing scared them. If trouble started, they could finish it, no problem. Yes I was a child raised in their house. I knew what a gun was and to leave it alone. It’s about your god given rights not about loving a thing. Most countries can’t even watch KZbin or use the internet because they have no rights we have rights because are founding fathers said a nuff and made shore we would-always be free and the constitution of the United States of America gives every American these rights and protection. Iam seeing a lot of people these days that think it’s ok to just give up rights like it’s nothing because they are ignorant about how many people have die fighting for are country and the rights we all have may be because now I’m guessing it’s hard for people that never put on a uniform and put there right hand up and swore oth to defend this country from all enemies foreign and domestic to do that is no small thing I can tell you first hand . what that means is ready to die and fight against anyone how wants to strip are country and Americans of there rights. I have always liked STEVE earl I grow up I Him me and my whole family still like he’s so far left he does a you turn now. And he’s from Texas omg and he has the right to say what he feels about guns or anything that’s his constitutional right to do so that’s what makes the United States of America the greatest country in the world but come on any one how is keeping a gun under there mattress,he should not have a gun if he doesn’t have it locked up with a kid in his house! Guns should be locked unless it’s on your person and in your control That’s control The comment was “love guns more then lives of other people” It’s not about lives most of know this it’s control of the people In 2018 40.000 people died in car accidents And in the same year 4.5 million people were seriously injured in car accidents as well. In the same year 4.761 people died from tractor trailer truck accidents. And I can go on with motorcycle accidents, drunk driving accidents But people don’t blow there tops over car accidents and deaths and the numbers are crazy. People are passionate over their rights I’m not mad at anyone how disagrees that’s why this country is the best . we can talk like this And discuss calmly and rationally with each other are opinions I’m shore a lot of people will hate this God bless

If a gun is used for evil, then yes it is wrong. However if a gun is used responsibly for the purpose of protecting your life or the life of another, then it is a very good thing to have in your possession. It is better to have a gun and not need to use it, than to need a gun and not have one. The minutemen at lexington common/green would agree. ... On another note I believe what Steve was trying to say is that because he was struggling with staying soberminded and trying to raise a son who was also getting into trouble and not making the right choices , that it was better for his personal situation not to have guns around where they could be used for "evill " ie. " The Devils right Hand " Any neutral object can be used for good or evil depending on the person using that object.

I realize this is quite cliche' but the Truth is gun control laws only affect those that are already responsible citizens, they make the most vulnerable even more defenseless, the real evil that lurks doesn't give a squat about laws, nor worry about doing time, that is if they're caught, which they'll do almost anything not to be.

Steve don't preach. He tells it like it is. Don't like it ? Don't listen. If it was an unloaded gun then isn't that as good as having it locked up ? Yeah - his son could've had his own ammo but I find that a bit unlikely. If Steve had the ammo secured than I don't see a problem. I could've had my revolver stolen when I carried but they never would have found my hollow-points because only I knew where they were. Thanks for your love of his talents though.

Re: Gun control/ownership: What event happened at the start of the Revolutionary War? A contingent of the King's Red Coats were enroute to a barn to confiscate a store of rifles and muskets that had been stockpiled by the colonists. The Red Coats were stopped by a group of armed colonists as the Red Coats attempted to march across a bridge. They faced off at each other, someone from one side or the other (not known) fired a shot and then it was on. The whole primary purpose of the second amendment was to be able to defend freedom against a tyrannical government. Self protection and hunting for food are secondary reasons. At that period of time it was an offense punishable by death to be caught with a lethal weapon, be it rifle, musket, cross bow, long bow, etc. The founding fathers lived through this time and they knew the value of being able to overthrow the government if it becomes dictatorial. Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Mao, and others took guns away from citizens for this reason. The primary reason the Japanese didn't attack the west coast of the United States during World War II is because they knew there were 80 million citizens with guns that would fight back. From the self defense angle, John Lott, a university professor who taught at U.of Chicago, Yale, Wharton, and other prestigious schools, was a gun control advocate for many years until he did a 10 year long study on gun ownership. He found that in states where open or concealed carry of firearms was allowed, the crime rates in those states was 10-12% lower than surrounding states, and in concealed carry states, this statistic held even though only about 4% of the people carried. In one year the Center for Disease Control, which records use of handguns for self defense, reported about 200,000 instances of citizens prevented crimes of various types using their personal rifle or handgun. The statistics from the NRA for the same year was about 400,000. Assuming both parties are biased due to their nature, it might be safe to meet in the middle of the figure at 300,000. Anyway you look at it, it's a big number, many more than the number of deaths caused by people not being able to protect themselves.

American Pig-Dog You’ll get no argument from me. I lived in downtown San Francisco for 10 years, so I heard my share of gunshots. Walked to a guy less than a min after he had been shot, but it was too late. He was done (26yo black male). But, despite that, I never felt the need for a gun. The only time I wish I’d had one was in the middle of the Sonoran desert. I had driven pretty deep into the desert (no signs of humans) in my RV. I wished I’d had one, but I didn’t end up needing it.

@@adventuresofbdndoug2856 Oh, I wasn't trying to be contrarian to you or in any start an argument. I appreciate your level headed approach. Edit: That's sad to hear your situation running into that guy. I myself needed one when I was about 12 years old. It was back before cell phones. It was the first time my parents left us alone to go to a restaurant. I was in charge of my younger brother and my friend was over. They'd left us with the neighbors number and told him they were leaving, so he said if we called he'd come on over. Someone started breaking in to my house, which was a complete rarity where I'm from. It was almost unheard of. We used to leave our keys in our cars and forget to lock our doors going on vacation. Well, we couldn't make it across the room to the phone while hiding under the bed, so I grabbed my dad's 9mm Beretta, and I told the shadow at my window in my best brave but probably squeaky pre-pubsecent voice that if he opened that window any more I was going to shoot him dead. He left and after a minute we called my neighbor, who came running over. That was the only time I touched my dad's guns without him around, but thank God he'd taught me how to use it.
