As a drummer I was never much into drummer’s solo albums. Most of the time they sounded like a drum solo with some chords thrown in for kicks and crashes. Steve Gadd’s bands play real songs with great melodies. He always plays what’s right for the song and let’s the other musicians shine. What a great musician and band leader.

Spinozza is amazing and often overlooked when it comes to list the greatest players ever. What a career! Met him once and spent an evening with him. Lovely and very interesting gentleman. Jimmy Johnson is stunning as always.... and Gadd... the perfect drummer.

First saw Steve in the 70s playing with Mike Mainieri in a small club down in the village (7th Ave South). Then saw him with Fagan & Becker in the early 80s in NorCal...I was taken aback by his efficiency, and the tone depth he got from his kit. Saw him last year in Oakland at Yoshis & he makes the notes come from nowhere. Clearly one of the finest drummers ever. Be like Steve.....you don't need to play so loud!

Real nice beat but where's the beef? I don't find much excitement here. Nothing much to get my feet, or hands, or heart or heat going. I love Gadd but I want more Stuff or something live Live at VOCE. I want it to swing hard! I want to hear some Michael Brecker excitement, some real improvisation. This is my definition of soft jazz and I can't call it jazz, not like I've been listening to since 1957. 2 stars.
