The thing that I find really magnificent about Steve Irwin, other than his contagious spirit, is that he's very honest, truthful and openly speaks his mind, and yet he never says anything negative about anyone; Never condescending or insensitive. Steve was a very emotionally-intelligent person, and someone whom the increasingly apathetic public should strive to emulate.

On your second point about people on this side of the globe being very vocal and proactive against offensive things; well, most of those outrages are justified. It was a long time coming, after decades and even centuries of abuse, prejudice, prosecution and disfranchisement of minority groups. You have to understand that American culture is very xenophobic, in large part due to Christian fundamentalism. They're almost as bad as Islamic extremists in the Middle-East.
