Open Arms has been a fav of mine forever, as a teen I fell in love listening to Steve's golden voice. BTW his nickname is The Voice. You asked if anyone sang better than him...no. But I think the 3 great voices of the last 50 years are David Bowie(dead), Queen's Freddy Mercury(dead) and Steve Perry. I really love Open Arms, it's like mana for my soul but there is another, When a Man Loves a Woman, that makes me melt....he voice is undescribable. It really moves me that a new generation is becoming fans of a voice I fell in love with 40 years ago. I was 13, MTV had not even been on TV a year when this band came on singing about a Wheel in the Sky. One dude had an afro, they all looked a bit strange but the lead singer...... Oh my! Had to ask my bro, who's 14yrs older, what band had a Black guitar player, with a big Afro (to my 13 year old sheltered eyes) a long hair lead, singing about a Wheel. Oh, man, I heard about that one for years.... That the afro was a white guy and the band was Journey. But I was in love with Steve Perry's voice and it sounds just as awesome today as it did 40 years ago.

Yep, I saw them in Vegas when I was 16 on the Escape tour in 1984. I had nosebleed seats that I had to stand on my seat arms to see the show but he was freaking awesome. Saw him again here in Vegas when he went solo in 1994 during For the Love of Strange Medicine tour. I went by myself, got a seat 5 rows from the stage. He sang a lot of Journey songs and I was in heaven. Side note, Brian Adams opened for Journey in 1984, he acted like a complete jackass and I've never liked him or his music since.

A short story behind the song Who's Cryin' Now! When the album was done, the record company told the band that Neal's guitar solo was too long. And that they needed to shorten it. Steve Perry got mad at them, and told them they weren't going to shorten it! The company told them that they needed to shorten it because, it was too long for radio play! Steve told them that if the radio stations wants to shorten it going into another song, that was fine with him. BUT they weren't going to shorten the solo. Steve said that there were words that were exchanged between him and the record company. Steve fought long and hard to keep Neal's guitar solo intact! Thus you have this amazing guitar solo!! 1981 was a great year for Journey. Journey was in their prime for the Escape tour (Who's Cryin' Now came from that album). That album took them places that they thought, they would never see! There's just something special about this 1981 Houston, Tx concert! I'ts special, magical, perfect and the list goes on! If you haven't already from this concert. React to Mother Father, Open Arms, Lights/Stay Awhile, Wheel In The Sky and the song Escape!! Great songs and even more perfect performances!!

I love watching your face. As soon as Steve starts singing, you start grinning. That's when you know you have a timeless artist! Have you tried Mother, Father yet? If not, there's a little surprise at the end!! ( Neil Schon ranked up there with Eddie Van Halen and Steven Vai in the 80s. They were called guitar gods or rock gods.Either way you get the meaning. God I miss the 80s!! lol)

An old Steve Perry story. back in the late 70's he was just a guy with a singing demo tape out there. He had a hard time finding a band because he was so good that most bands didn't want him because he'd outshine them. Journey made the right call by picking him up.

In the mid to late 90's I had to stay at a hotel in San Fran. My room had a view out onto the Golden Gate Bridge. My roommate was at dinner. I turned off the lights in the hotel room to look out the window and "When the Lights Go Down in the City" started playing on the radio I thought I was gonna faint. This is a true story.

I was youtubing today getting caught up on paperwork and put on some Journey videos. Of course I spend way too much time drooling over The Voice. Then I came across your youtube channel and man, the only thing better than listening to Steve Perry and Journey is when someone hears it for the first time and the light in your eyes and at times you look like you wanted to cry. That was one notch above loving the music is when you said he was a kick ass singer. I could shoot myself in the foot for not going to see him perform live back in the day. The man and band freakin' make me wanna cry. I guess it's Freddie Mercury vs. Steve Perry. Freddie is amazing but the way Steve touches his audiences is friggin' incredible. Thanks for doing you videos. You made me smile to know that the best music will never die.
