I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Lukather at a casino in Ontario Canada called Casino Rama. We ran into him and Mike Porcaro in the bar a few hours after the show ended. The Luke that you are seeing in this video is the Luke you meet in person. They gave us about 15 minutes of their time. Luke is the most genuine guy. I told him that I felt that he belonged up on a pedestal, to which he immediately corrected me telling me that he is just a great guitar player that was extremely fortunate to reach the heights that he has, doing the thing that he loves most. He talked with me, just like he spoke to the people in this video, like he knew me for years. As we finished talking, he offered my wife a hug, and I took one as well. This man is an exceptionally nice human being! I really enjoyed this video and will be looking for more to watch. Thanks Sunset Sound!

Many people have no idea just how many recordings Luke has been on and how much writing he did to shape music during the 70's, 80's, and 90's. If you listed to music during that time, chances are you're a Lukather/Toto fan and don't even know it. These guys ARE. ON. EVERYTHING.

I helped catalogue Jeff Porcaro's credits at what is now, the defunct, Toto Network. Jeff had upwards of 700 ALBUMS that he played on, that we could readily find info for. In 21 years, that 33 records a year. Am told he would sometimes do 4 sessions a DAY. No wonder his heart gave out! That's a sh*tload of work!!!! These guys were IT!!!!!

This is SO GOOD. Steve Lukather doesn't get the credit he truly deserves. There are SO MANY songs we all know and love and, in most times, he was on them. What an incredible resume in our pop culture. This was a great back and forth session, funny as crap at times too. I thoroughly enjoyed it. With that said, I also wanted to make a mention and a plea if you will. I hope you all one day are able to get both Ted Templeman and Donn Landee on the show. Fans like me have such huge respects for what they do and can only imagine the stories they could tell. It would be fascinating to hear how their brains work, and what they remember from that legendary studio. I hope they both one day do the show. I've been a fan of Luke's since the first Toto album. I've read, listened and watched countless interviews with him. This was one of the better interviews he's done, and it was nice having Niko there as well because you could feel the connection they both had. I've bought all of Toto's and his solo albums, and many albums he's played on. I've seen him play live with Toto and with Larry Carlton. I've met him three times. Once in '85 during the Isolation Tour after the show when he walked out the backstage door with his arm around Jeffrey as he had just finished telling him a joke and Jeff's laugh was so infectious. I again met those two in '88 before a show at the Gorge in Washington State talking to and taking pictures with them. And then in '01 at an after show in Phoenix meeting all the band members and getting a birthday bear hug from Luke. And in all the times I was fortunate to get to inter-act with Luke, he was personal, humble, funny, gracious and just a great guy. He made you feel like you were a friend. And believe me, the guy doesn't get enough credit with the general public on just how much he contributed to music in the 70', 80', and 90's. So glad to hear that Sony is doing a documentary on him. I just hope they let him be him and dig deep to show exactly what a big influence he was in our life's enjoyment of music.

I grew up in Sherman Oaks and used to listen to Toto practice in the Porcaro garage on Valleyheart Drive. Grant High was a great place to go to school in the late 1970's. Laurel Canyon was magic. Clubs on Sunset were ALIVE. Lonn Friend was a neighbor when he did AR. New Albums EVERY DAY. and Bruce Botnick is my Cousin by way of his mother, Nemoy, who lived in N Hollywood behind my grandparents on Carpenter if I remember correctly. She used to give me the tickets to the Grammy's and after parties he'd give her. Have had many Luke encounters. You could also see just about everyone at Tony's Liquor Store. Joe Walsh also lived hu the street. All the TV kids went to Cal Prep High on Ventura. Remember teasing Michael Jackson who just wanted to play basketball with the other kids, and we teased him. Almost everyone was a member of the Mulholland Tennis Club.

As I always tell you guys, I love all of these interviews you do. Lukather is one of those with once in a lifetime, Musicians. Master of his instrument and an incredible songwriter. I could listen to him talk nonstop forever. All of this stuff he has seen and heard and been a part of it is just amazing. I don’t think 80% of Toto fans know how talented everyone of those guys in that band are. A definite inspiration for generations of songwriters and musicians. You guys always out do you yourselves and I appreciate it so much. What I wouldn’t have done to have been born even five years earlier to be able to have been there and done with many of these incredible people did. These interviews, and the information in them is absolutely pertinent to the future of music. We are losing so many of these great musicians to time, that will never be able to share their experience and inspiration. So when you have somebody like Steve on here… I love it. Because future generations will be able to look back and be able to draw education and inspiration from the videos. I would love to see you get people in your studio, who may have not even recorded in it… But were great songwriters and musicians. People like Dennis DeYoung. Who have written so many incredible songs that deserve to be documented. Thank you again for bringing these videos to fans and musicians like me, around the world. As somebody who still writes their own music and a lot of what I write has that 70s and 80s feel. Because that’s what I love to listen to and I’m finding more and more that there is a huge fan base of all ages who enjoy listening to that kind of sound also. I think because of the love for the music of those times, whether it be the parents or the grandparents playing it for their kids and grandkids, it ends up making everybody love it. Which gives an inside look to new and upcoming musicians to hopefully not lose that inspiration, and use it to create new, incredible music that is more of them, instead of a drum machine and a couple chords. Because of you guys, this inspiration lives on, and gives many budding musicians an incredible look into the creation of some of the biggest and best songs in the history of music. The inspiration behind them, and the technicalities of how they were recorded. To allow new engineers a look into the incredible ways that this music was recorded and mastered to perfection. Outside of the digital age, which gives music from this period of time such a warm, incredible, feel and sound. So thank you again. Keep these great videos coming.

What an absolute treasure this video is! Lukather is legend, and was at the top of his game in the golden age of making records. I love hearing stories about how the records were made, and how these guys poured their heart and souls into making albums. Most of the general public has no idea that Luke and the boys from ToTo have played on most of the songs they love! I used to sit on my floor and read liner notes in cd sleeves every time I would listen to a new album. I can't count how many times I saw Lukather and the Porcaro's as the musicians. As a guitar head, I wondered why Lukather’s name was inserted here and there throughout the eighties and nineties. Read about a lot of guitarists and there’s his name. And I could never understand why. He wasn’t one the sonic shredders from back in the day. But here we are decades later and I finally really get it. I saw TOTO hear in the Philippines somewhere in the 90's maybe 93 or 94. Anyway, my friend and I chose to watch the 2nd night coz I told him that TOTO will surely play much longer which they did and they played most of the song that I wasn't expecting they would and wow, was it a blast. You can even ask Steve Lukather, I don't if still remember, that they have played their last song, had bowed to the audience but all of us in that theater were shouting Lea because it's one of their popular songs here and they haven't played it. And this happened, I think it was Steve who first came back on stage and everyone screamed in joy and he started saying,.... "we're sorry because we haven't prepared for this particular song". But being pros that they are, they went on playing it anyway partly acoustically. Man, I wouldn't forget that experience, I'm hugr fan of TOTO. Thanks for this video.

I love Luke. Met him after a show in 07 at Casino Rama. He graciously took 5-10 minutes to speak with my friend and I and our wives. Amazingly there was no one else there but Greg Goddo who was just leaving as we approached. He was gracious, humble and a real gentleman. He thanked us for coming to the show and the picture we took with him is one of my treasured possessions. Lee Sklar, who Luke talks about in the BB gun story was the bass player on that tour as Mike Porcaro had just been diagnosed with ALS and stopped touring. Like Luke, we saw him taking the time to chat with some fans in the lobby as we were walking through.

I wasn't a Toto fan at all because all I had ever heard was the pop, top 40 style stuff they put on the radio- their singles. And I like them but, they're not really my taste- then I finally listened to their discography- man these guys have some seriously heavy shit. In fact, the stuff on the radio isn't really a good representation of what they do- they're much heavier with a serious jazz influence, it's really good. I never thought 'Africa' was corny or silly. The track and melody are KILLER and the lyrics...... after the section here where Luke talks about the song, I googled the lyrics and listened to the instrumental track. I then searched for the meaning of the lyrics. One of the results contained a user comment from Cindy Baetz on April 30, 2022 at 9:58 pm. What Cindy said, I think is PERFECT. "This is one of my favorite songs of all time. I’ve never thought of it as silly. This is truly an exotic, existential song of longing and loving. I’ve always thought of the continent of Africa as fascinating and beautiful. This love song to her unique beauty is a perfect expression of respect for the miracle that is Africa."

I've loved "Africa" from the first day I heard it, about a week after "Toto IV" dropped. It's hypnotic, reminds me a lot of "Bottom Of Your Soul" written much later. That rhythm gets into your blood -- it becomes a part of you, once you've heard it. Absolutely love it! ❤

This is easily one of the best and most informative interviews about 'the business' I have heard. I remember buying Luke's guitar instruction video from 100 years ago, and since we are the same age, and both had a home base in L.A. the adventures in Guitar Center on Sunset bring back many awesome memories. This series on SunSet Sound is magical. Luke's humour gets better by the day. I had the honour to see Toto live an handful of times. I will never forget the first time me and my mates went to see them in Rome (Tenda a Strisce 1988). The venue's sound was historically terrible being a circus tent but their sound was pristine ...like CD quality. Speculations had it that they had played mostly pre recorded music.. Their stage apperance did not help either as the was nothing on stage. Two set of keys (double or three tiers) one left and one right, not a single cable dangling anywhere, don't think they had wedges either. These guys were ahead of their time for sure. A year later I came across an article about the technicality behind that tour and learned that all the sounds sets samplers, drum triggers, modules, guitar pedals etc, were set "Per track" by their techs backstage Front of the house used a Digital Consolle I believe Yamaha PM1d being the first digital live mixing desk released just a year prior to that tour. So yes, we were listening to Digital CD like quality music, played by the best players of their time.

Yes i noticed how downbeat he was in the Rick Beato video, he said during it that he was frustrated with not being able to make plans, having to do interviews on zoom etc, he was unhappy and it showed, not his usual self, but it was still a great discussion, he's totally back to his best here though, and i love that for him 🤩

ED, ALEX and DON in the 1980s were a really tight musical creative unit......Don was one of the key creative people at the heart of the VH nucleus....In 1984 ED referred to Don as one of his 'DEEP Humans' ....One of those rare persons who Ed made a special creative connection to.... If I heard correctly it was DON who BUILT the electronic workings of the 5150 studio...He was the person who single handedly made it all work technically & logistically. He was like a D.I.Y genius Thomas Edison with a great knowledge of all this stuff & Ed was always really grateful to him for his invaluable contribution ...From what I heard Don was a dedicated, creative person who always was shy of the limelight which was why record buyers would read his name on the back of all the VH albums as Engineer for over ten years without ever even seeing a photo of what he looked like....Don & Ed would experiment with all kinds of wacky stuff too....Like miking up Ed's Lamborghini , or recording a Hoover in a Septic tank...lol.....But with the MUSIC He & Ed & the rest of the band created really GREAT things too..Both when they worked together at Sunset sound on the first five albums & the two records they collaborated on at 5150....I'm sure Don was very upset when he heard that poor Ed had passed away.

Eddie tried real hard to get Don back into the fold after Don gave up music to pursue computer programming or something. Don wouldn’t return. We need one of these sit downs with Don Landee before it’s too late. He’s such a mysterious figure in all of this.

Don saw his contributions to VH & the music industry to be behind him for some reason, or that his life priorities had changed, & not even ED could talk him into coming back sadly.🙁😔 Don was always a very private guy I'd heard though. Even when the people he was working with were at the height of their powers he was one of the unsung heroes behind the scenes... He & Ted would have some fascinating stories to tell though because they were with Ed at the very heart of the creative process.

Fantastic. Steve is one of a kind, and so warm and generous and hilarious. This really shows that talent is only a small part of what is required to make a mark in music. There's so much more and Luke only gives us a glimpse, but its enough. The magic that happened in Sunset Sound (and elsewhere) came from people like Steve and Jeff Porcaro and others (in all roles) who have so much love for life, so much passion that it just can't be contained. Some of it was captured on tape, so we fans can continue to enjoy it. It's great to see Luke and many others still out there keeping the spirit alive.
