Continuing our 'Pubs of Scotland' series, here is our less-than-successful visit to Dundee! For many reasons it wasn't the easiest to pull together but we hope you still enjoy it :)
Filmed on Monday 12th February 2024

This video is not sponsored and all opinions are my own
I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is a result of doing all this myself I’m afraid. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday morning is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips!
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for KZbin Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

I was very pleased to watch this movie. My great-grandmother was born in Dundee. See moved to Holland when she was 17 y old and where she married my great-grandfather. 40 y ago I visited Dundee and walked through the streets where she grew up. My mother told me that she drank a glass of whisky every day, till she died when she was 92 y old. Thanks Steve...this was a meaningful movie for me! Keep going!

This is what I love about KZbin. No TV producer would dream of something so mundane, but it's a joy to watch. I think it's because the casual chitchat and first person angles give you a sense of being there. Thanks for the vid!

Awesome watch guys from here in New Zealand. I was born in NZ but went to Dundee (Wormit to be precise) as my Dad (Dundee born and bred) was in the merchant navy. Lived there until I was 5yo and returned to NZ where I have remained. 50 years on (this year) and I still haven't been back to Dundee 😞. It is my desire to travel back and find the graves of my grandparents and pay my respects. It is amazing from videos from Steve how many things remain vivid in my memory from when I was so young. The emotional attachment remains so strong. In the above video @2:05 I remembered exactly the building (recalled a tall glass facade) where Boots is where I used to get a wee Matchbox car when we went there like it was yesterday - probably been refurbished and modernised since then). Keep up the great work. I loved how organic and naturally flowing the video was too. Just for reference my grandparents lived in a wee village called Rait, then Monifieth, then Broughty Ferry until they passed. I'll need to check out some of the latter's pubs too when I get back....

I just love Alicjia's laugh. Makes me smile. BTW. Start your pub crawls a little later, say 2-3 in the afternoon and it all fades into the tea time drinking which is the best time of the day. Feel free to ignore my advice as most folks do. Keep up the good work guys.

"Dundee doesn't have the choice of bigger cities", he says! Well, you two, you found some belters there! That's my kind of travelogue - a glorious pub-crawl. Mind you, that special moment when the glass jumped out of Alicja's hand- "Oh sh**", I shouted! I was astonished to see all the palm trees in the park as you strolled between pubs though; Costa Tay! And that lunch spot - what a bargain! You did well to stay upright long enough to catch the train home guys. That was fun to watch! It's Saturday night down here in Northumberland, and I fancy a dram after watching you both. Thanks for letting us all tag along with you!

One thing that i think would make these fantastic videos even better, is to perhaps revisit them and spend more talk talking to the locals. Hear their stories, in other words. We need to keep the history alive in these various locals and you could be instrumental in that regard! Love you both and love your enthusiasm for the country and its peoples!

I'm impressed. In my younger days (in 1969) I arranged with a friend that we would walk from the suberbs of Copenhagen, where we lived, to the Town Hall Square in Copenhagen and stop at every bar on the way and have one beer. A tour of less than 20 kilometers. We did'nt recon there would be so many places, so it would be an easy task to do and youh'd probably get sober on the way walking to the next stop. In the beginning, there were some distance between the bars, so it went off quite well. But after a while the bars got more frequent and on around the 10 kilometer mark we were unable to walk or stand, so the project were cancelled. But we had a fun day 😀

Guys it’s been long time no speak from me but I’ve still been watching avidly. Another masterpiece from you’s two, looked like a brilliant day despite the 1or2 mishaps (personally they’re the days I always remember most fondly in the end); well done for lasting all day. Strangely just a couple of weeks ago I had an email reminder that I’ve booked to go on a group tour around Poland in September- and I’d forgotten all about it (no I haven’t constantly been drinking for the last 9 months since I last made a payment towards it 😅😅) and once again another one of your videos has given me more inspiration and probably yet more expense!!! Cheers 🍻 I think!!!

This reminds me a bit of The Longest Crawl by Ian Marchant, the account of his journey with his friend, to travel the length of Britain visiting numerous famous and not so famous pubs on the way. The plan was to start at the most southerly pub (Scilly Isles) and finish at the most northerly (Baltasound). It's a very engrossing and amusing book full of stories and history. I recommend it for a very good read. Bill

A great authentic video Steve. You were both beginning to slever away like poachers' dugs towards the end ! I have a confession to make, although I do not come from anywhere near Dundee I have visited all the pubs on your list, apart from The Tinsmith and Gunners. The Ferry is a nice wee place and The Royal Anchor just shades it from The Ship Inn. In Dundee, Phoenix Bar just shades it from The Speedwell and The Pillars. I like them all - without wishing to be compared to over-indulgent day trippers from Montrose !! The reason I am so well acquainted with the pubs so far from my home (the Glasgow area) is that I have been researching my mother's side of the family who came from Dundee and Kirkton of Auchterhouse (the family name was Fenwick). I do remember finding somewhere in my researches that Phoenix Bar got its name from the very first owner, who was also a Dundee wine merchant, called Peter Fenwick .... it was Fenwicks !!! Anyway, I couldn't find a link to him and my mother's family. Without bias, however, I would say that the overall winner was Phoenix Bar.

I found my great-grandfather's family gravestone in the graveyard of the Kirk in Kirkton of Auchterhouse. David Fenwick was his name and he was the village blacksmith. We are talking roughly around the years 1860 - 1890. His son Alexander married an Elizabeth Noonan from Dundee. My grandpa and grandma were shunned by both sides of the family as he was Kirk and she was Catholic. She gave birth to their son before being married in the Kirk at Logie? in Dundee. The Fenwicks are scattered all over the world, as are the Noonans. @@geoffdundee

@@Grangeburn ...there was a Fenwicks blacksmiths in dundee from 1905 until 2015 which went bankrupt due to loss of contracts......im sure there was a Fenwicks hardware store in Dundee around mid 1980s too......they were probably all related to you in some way....its an unusual surname too.

Fenwicks Blacksmith were at - 2 Fairfield Street Dundee. newspaper article from 2015.. A leading Dundee blacksmiths has gone into provisional liquidation with the loss of 14 jobs. Fenwick Blacksmiths was founded in 1904 and had an annual turnover of about £800,000, but was hit hard when fellow city firm and key customer Muirfield Contracts went into administration. The business has closed with immediate effect, with all 14 staff let go. The firm's assets, including property, vehicles and machinery, will now be sold off. Liquidator Tom MacLennan, of FRP Advisory, said: "Fenwick Blacksmiths was a highly regarded specialist blacksmith business with a good customer base. The administration of Muirfield Contracts meant that the company was unable to continue trading. "This is a difficult time for the staff and we will provide as much support to them as possible."

Nice video, but a little unfair on the Dundee pubs - expecting an atmosphere on a Monday morning. I was in Mennie's (The Speedwell) the day after you - as the painting had just been finished. It's the best trad bar by far - cask ales, best whisky collection I've seen in a city cente bar for years, no music. Funnily enough I got talking to a Spanish (or Portugese) guy next to me at the bar who was a beer afficianado, and he said he often travelled into Dundee from Broughty Ferry (where he lived), just to have a beer in Mennie's. Mennie was the name of the German lady who ran the bar in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Mrs Mennie wasn't German. Her nephew Ian who was bar manager, his wife was German.

Love your nails, Alicja. Thanks for taking us on a pub crawl. I'd be apprehensive going into some of the pubs from looking at them from the outside, but not one turned out to be heck no. The pubs are like our Irish pubs, snugs and all.

Thanks for showing us around these fine old pubs around Dundee. Guess I'm too old and burnt out to appreciate liquid spirits at 11am with no food. Videoing much quieter before ,say, tea time. But coffee, food, exploring seems to feel more comfortable around American 'toddy time' (5:30p) when drinking really picks up. I'm glad you youngsters are enjoying all the drink offerings and still have healthy livers. Pub crawl for young adventurers. Thanks for bringing us along😊

That pie sounds delicious I have not come across that combination before, it might be worth travelling 400 miles for one. You do make some great videos and I didn’t mention in a previous comment that I had some Scottish ancestry but I forgot to mention I also have a Polish ancestor. Enjoy the pub crawl best thing on a cold day.
