Hi folks, this is a bit of a different format today. Windy weather and the fact it was more holiday than filming trip left me little to work with editing the video, but this is what I managed to pull together from my dodgy clips, I really hope you still enjoy it! Postcards being dropped in the post at 17:42, very much a dying art form and I love sending and getting them from friends while they are traveling. Fabulous video! I don't know why have missed this until now. It's many years since I was in Orkney. My wife and I (and our then one toddler) flew down from Shetland one time for a weekend. The weather turned bad, so the only way back was on the cargo ferry (pre roll-on-roll off). They could take 12 passengers -- and our son was the 13th! We had a small cabin on this small, unstabilised boat and rolled all night from Kirkwall to Lerwick. The motion was especially bad as we crossed the Sumburgh Roost, the tide race at the south end of Shetland. Orkney and Shetland have many similarities, but also significant differences. By the way, I love the Italian chapel - and amazing work of art by the Italian prisoners of war.

Wonderful and evoked so many memories for me. I have been to Orkney four times and explored everywhere from South Ronaldsay and Hoy to Rousay, Sanday, Eday, Westray and Papay. And, I have made it to North Ronaldsay too. I still have much to cover. If you liked Skara Brae and the isle of Birsay go to Rousay where there are two sites to visit, Westray for Noltland Castle and the lighthouse headland walk, and for ultimate tranquility, Knap of Howar on Papay for the ancient remains and isolated beauty. I do love Stromness and have camped many nights at the campsite visible from your footage as the ferry is approaching Stromness. My absolute favourite places in Orkney though have to be Rackwick Bay, Hoy and Pierowall, Westray. Your video has inspired me to return next uear (2024).

A highlight of that trip (in 2018) was a trip down to Sumburgh, from the port town of Lerwick. At Sumburgh I enjoyed a pleasant stroll to the lighthouse, at the southern tip of the Shetlands, where there was also a lovely little cafe looking out to sea, and I had a very nice scone and coffee.

Really stunning views. Thanks. The accent from the guy who made that announcement at the end sounded like a Welshman who has lived in Scotland for a while. There are two distilleries on the Orkneys. The famous (some would say infamous) Highland Park where 80% of the price of the whisky goes on fancy marketing and packaging. Then there is the little, almost unheard of distillery, Scapa, which is terribly neglected by its parent company. Scapa, a distillery capable of producing the most wonderful spirit at 14 or 16 years old, is reduced to selling underaged whisky on the cheap by an owner who couldn't care less about this grand old distillery. You have wet my appetite. I'd really like to visit Orkney now.

Great video! We visited Orkney in October last year and had a great time, despite our 3 day visit being shortened to a 1 day visit by ferry cancellations due to incoming rough seas. (We had to get off of Orkney or else miss our flight back to the USA.) You showed some locations we wanted to visit but didn’t have time for. I would recommend the Yesnaby cliffs just south of Skara Brae. Very scenic with water crashing against the cliffs. One Orkney resident we talked with mentioned the very low crime rate on the islands, so I wasn’t too surprised to see the honesty box with the card machine. Again, great video!
