Seems a nice Guy, but for me, bringing up my Children was the most fulfilling experience I could have ever imagined. He's right about chasing the 'materialists dreams' though.

Same here. My wife and I have six and wouldn't trade it for the world. We don't buy into the "rat race." She stays home and homeschools. The rhythm of our life is currently set by the needs of our family and not the insatiable accumulation of stuff (although I'm not going to say that we don't have anything). We strive to maintain a minimalist lifestyle that's modified for our family. It's an ongoing process though. I'm like you, I wouldn't conflate materialism with having kids. Some of the biggest materialists out there fear commitment and thus never start a family. Obviously, being careless and unintentional about starting a family isn't good either. I like Steve's mindset in the sense that it influences the culture within a family, but I see the conflation of having kids with out of control materialism and the overpopulation myth as being a "noble" excuse to not have children or to purposely have only one or two. We have "stuff" and regularly we sell, give, or toss things to stay organized. We also utilize hand-me-downs. That said, with having six, my kids often just play with each other. BTW, the philosophical definition of materialism is that nothing exists except matter. This belief ironically feeds the tendency to feel that it's pointless to have children but justifies itself using the more common definition of materialism, which is a hyper focus on possessions.

@@jims512 He says raising kids is not a great achievement. I can't respect him as much as I used to. Kids are the future of society. Bringing them up properly is pretty important. He seems to also be against the creation life because of a so called lack of resources yet he is a minimalist and claims you don't need much. Complete contradiction.

Mr. Maxwell brought up a lot of food for thoughts. The basic premise is to asking one's self "Why am I doing this?". The question can be about things, procreating, love, workout, relationships, and any undertaking. Mr. Maxwell had done all the things the rest of the world had done before he had his moment of clarity. Many only reach such clarify in the very end of twilight. And most never saw such clarity to the last breath.

I agree, but there is another factor. Peer Pressure from your family and friends. I wish more people could find that philosophy instead of forcing people towards money and material goals.

Omg...waking up and just living off the internet...that people in factories in China made, silly educated transport people delivered, educated hipsters developed, farming family people with kids who work the fields for your food. Dude has to become less 'dude' and appreciate others work in this system. Right about materialistic, but sounds like he's still in his awakening journey. Reminds me too much of professor from back to the future.

Glad he seems to have found greater happiness in life... but he seems to undercut himself, as you interview him. He is the product of all of his choices (good and bad) leading up to this point in his life. He seems to think he 'broke free' and finally became, and did, all the things that he wanted, but doesn't seem to realize his 'present' is, and always be inextricably linked to his past, same as the rest of us. If not for his previous life experiences... how would he even know he is 'better' now? 'Better' relative to ... what else? Cool interview, even though I don't quite agree.

Just as well for him that there are so many losers who stay in one place otherwise there would be no hotels for him to stay in, room service to prepare the rooms, launderettes to use, restaurants to eat in, airlines to take advantage of.

The world at that time had a population of 7.405 billion people. Nowhere near 400 billion. Still a hell of a lot of people though. We've reached over 8 billion in 2023.

I wanted to know what he said about this subject; however at 67, for the last 2 yrs to the present, I have realized that the "bucket list", super vacations, a state of the art car, upgrading the home, etc, is just temporary and also unnecessary. All things pass. Make up your own mind what is important, what you need vs what you want, and move on to be a happier person.

The American Dream is the American lie, not always but. I have witnessed too many retired people who are alone in a home without their kids visiting. Dying alone, the kids dont care or even remember what it took for their parents to give them that life. Even at that, the house you worked for all your life ends up being sold because the kids dont want it or want to take care of it. Steve Maxwell will die alone but he will die happy.

We are barely pushing 10 billion and the population increase is declining (if that makes sense) we're having less babies per family and so population numbers aren't skyrocketing like people think they will, many predict a population implosion. As a minimalist I agree with the over emphasis on consumerism being a detriment to ones quality of life. I've lived the buy once cry once mantra for years now. I'd rather research and save up money purchasing the exact item that will do everything I need and last a long time, than just throw money out the door on the next gimmick to impress the lemmings.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. An American dream is a universal kind. Marriages break up for a lot of reasons: some folks are not cut out to be parents and the children can sensed that their birth were never meant to be. It is sad. Material acquisition fulfills a void in a person’s life. Thus, he goes filling up his closet till the door cannot be close anymore due to being over the brim. When a normal person dies these days, his heirs had a lot of cleaning to do and delivering donation goods to the Goodwill at several times. So much, it is so like a “baggage “ tied to the ankles. On the other hand Mr. Maxwell is not an ordinary person. More like a monk in an orange garb, spreading his Word. He has a lot of good life lessons to share with us. I certainly agreeing with his comment about many things including the issue on population explosion. We are all in this world together...like it or not. Peace to yo all and gratitude for this moment.

I feel that way about my living in this small voluntarily ignorant small town btw.The people in this community have sucked out all the outward joy in me.Leading me to discover pretty much everything he's said so far.Now I've totally walked away from this community and the majorities 2 faced lifestyle.I've found more satisfaction in being alone away from them all. While they group up and gossip about one another I'm out making changes in the world.
