The hip check happened because the refs let the Spurs get away with murder all game. If the refs had reined the overly physical stuff in earlier, then Horry wouldn’t have felt free to do the hip check. Basically the league’s power structure wanted to punish the Suns for playing the game differently than everyone else, so the refs had David Stern and Stu Jackson’s implicit approval to allow the Spurs to beat the crap out of them, then slap overly-harsh punishments on any Sun who reacted.

I’m so glad Nash is saying this, like, it’s all I was thinking about with him in the Suns...he just didn’t look for his shot enough. I think he would’ve been much higher on the all-time list if he would’ve done that...& I believe you can hear that regret in his voice. But, hindsight is 20/20 he was still my favorite player to watch in the league during his prime...but with his gifts at that time period, I think he could’ve reached top ten all-time if he shot more early as he was by far the best player on that team...not even a close second.

For people who don't think Nash could've been an elite scorer, in the 2005 playoffs against Dallas it was the Mavs game plan to make Nash a scorer and not a playmaker, and he averaged 30ppg and 12apg on 55%fg, 42% 3pfg. The last 4 games of that series he averaged 37 and 12 on 60% fg and 50% from 3. In today's NBA he would've been told to take 8-10 threes a game and score much more. Would've been interesting to see

Steve's suns did not change the game, they did not change the way other teams and players set up, they didn't change the shots people were taking, they didn't change the type of players who got paid, they didn't change anything. The warriors strategy was so dominant that it literally changed how basketball in the NBA is played, it was so effective that even the skeptics couldn't deny it. They have changed the whole paradigm in such a fundamental way that to suggest the suns did anything even remotely close is offensive.

You have conveniently glossed over the fact the Steve Kerr became the Suns GM while Steve Nash was already the dominant player in Pheonix, Alvin Gentry was a D'Antoni assistant, a head coach to Steve, and literally installed the SAME offense they had in Pheonix, as the offensive coordinator in Golden State. So much so that Alvin Gentry's post-championship comment to the media was, "Tell Mike D'Antoni he's been vindicated." Mike D'Antoni DID NOT run that offense when he was the head coach in Denver. Steve was the only established player on that Suns team (many went on to become "established players") so Mike geared the offense around him. Nash NEVER played with Golden State yet he is a consultant for their team and has been. The Warriors went from 7th place to the best team ever, by simply changing their player's deployment to what Kerr observed in PHEONIX. Karl Malone said he never ran the pick and roll in the "high" position (near the top of the key) the side PNR was standard in the NBA until the Steve Nash Suns. With all due respect to one of history's great teams, they have never done anything offensively that the Spurs, Suns or Bulls didn't do... NOTHING. "21/pistol" "high pick and roll" "pace and space" "slot action" and running to the corners were all Suns innovations and they are ALL standard play now. Now those are FACTS. If you have something other than just insistence and narrative please enlighten me. I'm always open to learning more about basketball.

My favorite player to watch. He was so good with his off hand. Most ambidextrous player I have seen, passing, dribbling, shooting. Absolutely the best passer I have ever seen. Four time member of the 50-40-90 club and missed a fifth time by just one made free throw. Could score when needed (48 against Dallas in ayoffs). He was the best shooter over a decade from more places the floor than anybody, Ray Allen number two. Just an exceptional player.

Man, miss these games so much. Am a huge Nash fan, and used to hate the spurs because they were so dirty but in this smart, wily way. It was such an amazing rivalry watching the upstarts with their small, crafty hero with a giant heart take on this well oiled, disciplined, cunning almost sinister feeling spurs squad. Damn, but funny thing is, Manu was my second favorite player. And one of my favorite plays of his, and for my money it was the definition of a wily play, in that its kind of clever but also completely underhanded, was this one time, as the broadcast was cutting to a commercial, they showed a replay of Amare trying to run after a rebound and, in slow mo, you see he like struggle for a second, then he points down, and the camera pans down and Manu is legit holding his leg, like something out of a cartoon. As a Suns fan, 2007 was our year. Everyone knew that with Dallas eliminated by Golden State, the Suns vs. Spurs was the NBA Finals. If I were the Suns, I would have told the league we aren’t playing game 5 until you reinstate Amare and Boris. Nearly 20 years later, it still hurts because of all the years we were contenders, this was our best team. I would even put this team over the 2021 team.

Nash saying that players take too many bad threes nowadays is a very important point that a lot of coaches don't want to admit. As a Mavs fan I keep telling other fans that Doncic needs to develop a mid-range game but I keep getting brushed off. The man said it right there, you gotta make defenses respect you on each level of the court and you're making it that much easier for them by refusing to take mid range jumpers. I'm pretty sure Nash is going to coach tf out of KD and Kyrie. Nets are going to be a problem
