What I noticed on the film, is that the 1st fish that "got away" tried to suck the bait from far enough away that the hooklength was too short. The 2nd fish that was hooked, came right over the feeder and the 4 inch hooklength was perfect. A good example of why we don't catch every fish, because not all fish are feeding in the same way. I am convinced, that after over 30 years of carp fishing (and using The Method since it became known in the late 90's), hooking only occurs when the hooklength is straightened, to whatever degree is necessary to start to pull the hook back out eye-first. There is always going to be a sweet spot in hooklink length in every individual situation, where the distance between the hook and the weight allow the bait to be picked up and taken far enough in the mouth, and then straightened, pulling and flipping the hook before the fish senses that there is something foreign in it's gob. If the fish was hooked during a "blow out" the mechanics of most rigs actually prevent hooking, because the bait takes the hook back out bend-first. In the case of semi-supple mono there is a small chance that the hook could stay hookable during ejection, but unlikely. The rigs that stay "prone" when blown out are either stiff hooklink material (probably 15lb+ depending on fish mouth size) and/or a stiff hair that holds the bait past the hook bend, of sufficient length that it cannot readily flip backwards in the mouth (again depending on fish size). For what it's worth (which may not be much) my view is that the best arrangements for fish size and match rules, etc for the exact fishing Steve is doing, is: Wafters - D-rig and a bayonet (very similar to Steve, but the D-rig leaves the hook prone to catch hold even better than the hair-loop). Sinkers - Stiff-ish hair holding the bait beyond the bend (knotless hair in nylon with a band or through the bait with a stop). The weight of the bait can actually aid the hook to turn. Other observations in my use of feeders so far (and watching these great films), are that for a smaller pile I use a banjo, sparsely loaded, with a sinker buried at the bottom of the feeder. For a bigger pile, I use a method feeder with a wafter, which will hop about anyway so it doesn't really matter where in the feeder it starts. 4 inches is about bang-on for the sinker as it should still be in the feeder. The wafter is more hit'n'miss on length depending on where the bait is (I still use 4 inch), but it could beat the sinker for pick-ups even if it doesn't actually hook as many of them. Thank you for taking the time to make these films.

You did not have a lot of time to talk m8 cus the two little kids with you were shouting and making noises like little babies. Specially, the ginger haired one is voice goes right through ya . So I’m glad an adult is going through it. Cheers Steve👍

I love that exactly every fisherman tries to reinvent hair rig, creating tons of speculation why his «not so hair rig" is much more potent. Well, balls.

This is just as useful as the underwater footage. Evidence based information. If you were fishing dead maggots on the hybrid would you still use a QM1 with out the hair?
