He became the first champion to unify two major crowns P.K.A & W.K.A, in 1979.
In November 1981, Shepherd challenged PKA heavyweight world champion Demetrius "Oaktree" Edwards while only a middleweight, Shepherd outpointed heavyweight Edwards in a 10-round non-title match in West Palm Beach, Florida, a feat that made him the first middleweight kickboxer ever ranked number-one in the heavyweight division. He was also recognized as “Fighter of the Year” by Official Karate magazine's 1982 Kickboxing Hall of Fame.
He announced his retirement from active kickboxing in 1987, though he made periodic return appearances until 1999.
Shepherd made the network news in December 2018 for an incident that occurred as he was leaving Anita’s Mexican Restaurant outside of West Palm Beach. A man hit him in the head with a bottle and tried to steal his cellphone. Shepherd momentarily blacked out, but when he came to, the mugger learned he’d made a major miscalculation.
Taking a boxer’s stance, Shepherd threw a right. When the mugger covered up, Shepherd fired at his ribs and heard a crack that told him he'd broken the man's ribs. The attacker dropped, then took off.
He passed away on May 11, 2021, owing to complications from a terrible accident. We will not soon see his like again.
