Taken from a two-hour-and-40-minute sold-out show recorded at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, Where the Wild Things Are is yet another live showcase of meticulously mapped Steve Vai compositions. Much of the material is new, and tested out in front of an unfamiliar but eager audience, with Vai exercising his chops to the limits. It's a chance for him to bust out every trick in the book: blazing through ridiculously difficult scales, double hand-tapping extravaganzas (where he plays the guitar like a piano), and sick string bends and whammy bombs to the point where his custom Jem neck should be left, imaginably, in the same shape as the rubbery guitar on the cover of Flex-Able. The listening experience is more geared toward frequent guitar clinic attendees than someone seeking background music for a day drive. It's not easy listening. It's the kind of stuff that deserves full concentration, and while most will furrow their brows while focusing on the guitar pyrotechnics, the rest of the instrumentalists are tightly locked and highly ambitious in their own right. Touring for the first time as a collective, violinists/keyboardists Ann Marie Calhoun and Alex DePue join Vai, along with bassist Bryan Beller, drummer Jeremy Colson, and guitarist/sitarist Dave Weiner. The virtuosic tendencies run high, the musicianship is incredible, and as a whole, the group sounds more like one of Zappa's stage bands than, say, Roth's. Things are still flamboyant and over the top, as expected from the owner of a three-pronged heart-shaped guitar, but there are signs of maturity. As a guitarist and as a composer, Vai's only getting better with age, as proven by Real Illusions: Reflections' sprawling, elastic "Freak Show Excess" and "Building the Church," running the gamut with haphazard emotional shifts, flawless changes, and otherworldly playing.

I get somewhat saddened when people criticise other people's efforts. Steve Vai plays and records for Steve Vai. and if others like it ,Great. If it's not your cup of tea, move on. The guy is a Musical Genius in the same way Hendrix was. We need people who push the Boundaries, if they weren't there we'ed still be listening to Gregorian Chants.

Anyone who expects people to pay to watch them perform needs to expect criticism or develop a practical skill.
@Frankincensedjb123

Irrelevance Well, a musician's skill may not be "practical" but it is essential. And you're right about criticism. And I don't know why people get so huffy about disagreement which is as common as the common cold. It's there, accept it, accept difference, move on. Personally, I think Vai is an excellent guitarist or technician, and he doesn't need me to say that. His resume stands for itself. But a "musical genius"? No. He is not particularly skilled at crafting tunes. For that, I'd defer to Jeff Beck, Steve Howe, Jimmy Page, etc. I even prefer Joe Satriani's (Surfing With the Alien) writing to Vai's. Writing music is a challenge in itself, never mind writing instrumentals which are much more difficult to write and maintain listener attention. But people are open to their opinions. I just they'd be more specific about what they're talking about while leaving their fanatical emotional attachment behind while doing so.

Watching this in 2022 shortly after Alex Depue passed away tragically. His innovative and modern virtuosic style of violin playing inspired me a lot and help me become the musician I am today. I took one lesson from him my junior year of college over skype to learn his insane chopping and playing at the same time technique.

I've met Vai three or four times now and each time I am amazed at how humble and soft spoken he is as a person, yet how demonstrative he is once he takes the stage. It's an amazing transformation, and one which far too many people see as arrogance which is completely off base. Vai is an amazing person and an amazing musician, worthy and deserving of all the highest respects. Being a guitar player, I know what it takes to be able to play and play well, but Vai's ability eclipses my own on such a level that it's both humbling and inspiring despite the gap.

Thank goodness for a virtuoso guitarist that can actually put on an entertaining show. People who bash on his "egotistical" live act need to realize that if they wanted a truly great guitarist without all the stagecraft, there's thousands of them out there (Petrucci and Eric Johnson are particularly statue-esqe), but this is Vai; he's really the only guy I've ever seen that could do this. Want something easier and more listenable that you consider "more" of a song? There's countless acts out there that can do it. I'm glad Vai does Vai; someone's gotta do it!

As a guitarist for 60 years, after I watched this I glanced over at my guitar and I didn't recognize it for a moment! I realize that I was transported, that my years of study was the ticket and Steve Vai was the vehicle evidently powered by the motive force behind music and at its service, as I would like to be. He reveals and confirms many things valuable to me, as I continue to find my own voice. Onward 🚀🎵

To the kid who said no great guitarists have ever called Steve great... LOL! My goodness... While on the bus during the Experience Hendrix Tour, my buddy Vernon Reid said EVERYONE on the tour considered Steve a "Guitar God". He mentioned that because we were talking about how kind and down to Earth Steve is. Vern said everyone was pleasantly surprised at how ego-less Steve is. As Steve's friend, I can assure you that is the Truth: Steve is one of the most kind and gracious people I've ever met. Great to his fans. Great to his friends. Great family man, too. I'm a disabled guitarist--not able to play at all right now, and he's ALWAYS helped accommodate me so I can see him when he comes to town...even if I can't stay for the show (due to my health) , he always let me make arrangements so my caregivers could take me to meet up with him. You cannot believe how much this lifts my spirits! My 70 year old mother thinks he is the most kind celebrity she's ever met! As well as Vern! ;) I've been a fan of Steve's for over 30 years. I don't normally leave comments sticking up for him because his music does the talking...but the comment I'm referring to made me laugh out loud it was so ridiculous. Steve is such a fantastic person, it irks me sometimes when the haters talk about him, and they don't know him. He's all about peace and good vibes. To all of the haters: I hope you, too, find music that moves me the way Steve's music moves me. Perhaps you'd be less inclined to leave disparaging comments if you had this sort of happiness in your lives. "MUSIC IS THE ELIXIR THAT KEEPS ME ALIVE." -- Bhakti Brophy ©2005 : )

Vai's music is very complex, technically as well as musically. Many people are not charmed by this extravaganza of vituosity and high musical standard. Vai has developped himself from a young player in the candy store of Zappa to what he is now. He covered a lot of musical grounds. He even writes pieces for orchestra. That is the difference between him and other musicians e.g. Joe Stariani, Johnson, Beck, Hendrix, Govan and so on. Vai is allways renewing himself, seeking the very limits of rock with excursions to Jazz, classical and world music. That is what I appreciate in Vai. Yes he is very present on stage, but he lives his music on stage, making it great shows to watch and listen!

What a mystery is Mr. Vai in the midst of his transparency. This fine fellow writes more new and good works - no resting on the past with this man - No, he just keeps writing for the joy of playing NEW THINGS for the enjoyment of others. Although it's a little bit about Steve and the other featured players - it's mostly about the music; who else writes like this? Who else performs like these souls that Steve has gathered.? What a fine display of sound and stage beauty.

I not only love the way Steve Vai plays guitar when he's in his element of expression. But also his stage presence, his demeanor, he has other stringed instrument musicians on stage with him, adding to my overall interest, and respect for his creativity. I've seen Interviews with Steve Vai where he comes across very humble, likeable, and wise, I can easily go on and on. But I'll just finish by saying, He's just the type of special person that I'm personally happy to be rooting for his long lasting success.

Steve Vai - What a great guy. The consummate performer and writer. When I watch and hear this live performance there are a number of detectable elements in it. As powerful a player he is and as are also the other hand picked musicians - it is all about the music (hoping that this is not too trite an expression to use). NOT me or you or them - no - one feels as though Steve expresses it to be a distinct privilege to play for the listener. It is most certainly a privilege for the listener to hear these souls bare their souls.

Thank you so much Steve ... What a geat show. You are one of top students of the Zappa Academy. If you are in to that stuff this will fit seamlessly. You and Dweezil are absolutely doing great in keeping this music direction alive for upcoming generations. Let there always be a place for high end non industrial music.

It is one of the most difficult challenges a critic, musician, fan, or viewer of this live concert may ever face! Although we all are "entitled" to our own opinion, one would have to be brain dead or a idiot. A hater of all haters, which garners no recognition from those of us in the know. As a lover of a wide variety of music, this epic show has impressed and moved me like nothing before. What a tour it must have been and why did I not see this band live on this tour?? Every member is phenomenal and I imagine that their practice sessions were off the charts. These guys are locked in tight! They are sick, but not where I felt like giving up and never playing again. Awesome musicians can make you want to never play again or be full on inspired, I chose the latter. And no, I will never play as good as Jeremy Colson on drums, or shred like the master Vai, I press on....seeking to lay down some tasty grooves and cool songs, thanks to a very influential DVD that this is. Steve Vai has put a stranglehold on the title of the best guitar player in the world, ever. He's tapped into the same stuff that Criss Angel has...not of this world.....crazy, wild, and wonderfully extraordinary. 5 of 5 Stars

I have extremely valid reasons for disliking Vai's music and attitude, especially in this concert, but even if my "hate" was based purely on subjectivity (because, you know, it's music) that would be legitimate. I don't think you have to be braindead to love this, why would you think I have to be braindead to dislike it?

I'm a very simplistic player myself, "Economy" style as Mr B.B. King describes himself. But you know what? Vai is one of my BIGGEST idols. Why? 'Cause yeah, he's a shredder, but like most of my favorites, he has passion. I envy speed and dexterity,but with a lot of speedy players, it's just speed for the "look what I can do" vibe. I find myself asking "Where's the love here?" Steve is the real deal.

I play both violin and guitar. This video is a treat for me. I play a Mark Wood 5 string electric. Really enjoy both violinist', but I am super impressed with Alex Depue. I also play 6,7, and 8 string guitars. Steve Vai is a great guitarist, bar none. He is always looking for new ways to be more exciting and innovative. Love the new G3 tour with Steve Morse as well. Keep up the amazing work Steve Vai.

I have played guitar 37 years myself. I might even still have it.. lost in a box somewhere…? Haha!

Players capable of sharing their talent with others drive the continued progress of music that sounds good. Steve is a cowboy who rides the range bringing in other fine string players to the HOME CORRAL. This show's recording portrays this principle. Enjoy it now.

What a fantastic performance! Steve Vai is an incredible musician who is pushing the boundaries as to what is commonly defined as rock guitar. What most people can't access here is music evolution. You might not like his music but what can't be denied is his innovation and originality. After 60yrs of rock n roll it's an incredibly difficult feat to achieve. Hello. Thanks sharing this incredibly live ! I love watching all over, that's just amazing guitaristic performances, of Steve Vai and all his musicians. I appreciate also the moment when Steve uses the acoustic guitar, and makes a furious rythmics with the violonist and the drummer ! In fact, i appreciate everything, that's such a high music... Between classic and hard rock... I'm impressed by the way they all perform by memory, all the pieces of complexed compositions... I love all the expressions of Steve Vai when playing, they suit so well with his music and sounds, and sometimes funny ! And whispering like a prayer, just an amazing melody, and the passage 2.09 to 2.10 is a sharp performance in the expressivity of sounds like something human or even animals... Can i share this live on my playlist channel please ?! 🤩 🙏

I was there live for one of his shows in SF at the fillmore. Loved this guy since I first heard him but his overall tone he was using there for years i.e. david lee roth crap was so whinny. Anyway my friend and I are guitar players well more like enthusiasts, this man is a guitar master musician, talent and a guitar god. I thought we would stay for maybe 4 to 5 songs tops. We stood there with mouths open for 2 hours plus. I love solos and runs and amazing fretwork and tricks but usually cant watch shit like that for 2 hours. This was not only entertaining but amazing. We stood in awe for the whole show until he played for the love of god. FUckin incredible live!!!! One of the best shows I have seen ranks up in my top five. Lets stop comparing these guys to each other, Satriani, Vai, Skolnik, Johnson, etc They are all amazing and immensely talented and really need to be experienced live in concert

Zappa influenced Vai very early on in Steve's career.. It's evident to this day when he plays you hear Zappa played to the next level. Vai is a master technician also like FZ was. He is not for everyone just like Zappa was not either. Two greatly gifted individuals either way. Zappa was a composer and master musician. Steve Vai has become the same.. No surprise..

+Don Simonelli Zappa wasn't a master technician, not on guitar anyway. That's why he brought Steve Vai into his band, to play the parts he couldn't play himself. Zappa was a much more soulful, sleazy avant / blues player.

I don't think anything that Steve Vai does can be considered "safe". He is a composer, and arranger and a band leader who plays the guitar in a style that fits the piece he is doing, complimented by a bad ass band, or sometimes a symphony orchestra. His pieces explore phrasing and melodies, runs and use of Hendrix-like enthusiams as he fits a face melting lead into his compositions which are extremely complex. Only a master of his instrument, and astounding composer and leader can make this format work. And he does, better than any of his contemperaries.
@the-LeoKnightus

Jay Toomuchhustle -Most guitar half-wits and music critics arent't sure what they are hearing when they hear Steve. The way his compositions work may sound safe, as he always maintains a strong tie to the root, but through many variations that are actually complemetary 3rds and augmented 5 steps of that root. With many triad runs and insane arpeggios that compliment the chords played by wiener and his rhythmn section to create harmonies that pull the melody into dark, light, heavy and beautiful circular compositions in tones and colors that stray as far from his root as possible, but always giving the root a nod almost every measure by either running it, or layering a complimentary chord or triad that creates hauting harmonies that I see reminicent of John Coltrane's 2 solos in Giant Steps. All" non-studio" guys know is it sounds good together, and isn't that what it supposed to do? Ala Jeff Beck?
