Since 1969 UFO is one of the world’s leading Hardrock bands with an extraordinary history.
Having started as a Boogie-influenced formation founded by Phil Mogg (vocals), Mick Bolton (guitar), Pete Way (bass) and Andy Parker (drums), they soon turned to psychedelic influenced sounds on their second album “Flying”.
A major stylistic change came in 1973, when Michael Schenker joined the band and UFO then defined their particular hard rock style.
After the departure of Schenker in 1979 Paul Chapman (who already was guitarist for UFO in 1974) joined the band with whom they released the album “No Place To Run” in 1980.
This was produced by none other than the famous Beatles-producer George Martin.
This album marked another chapter in the history of the band. Chapman did not make the mistake of simply imitating Schenker’s style, instead the music became rougher and earthier.
With this line up (Pete Way, Phil Mogg, Andy Parker, Paul Chapman and Neil Carter on guitar and keyboards) UFO appeared on November 29th, 1980 at the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund for a legendary Rockpalast-Concert.
From the first notes of the opener “Chains, Chains” (which at that time was a preview of their forthcoming album “The Wild, The Willing And The Innocent”) you can hear an experienced band celebrating a compact, homogenic, and straight forward performance
Leaving the spacerock-area of the first two albums behind, UFO presented the highlights of their then recent albums “Lights Out” (“Too Hot To Handle”), “Obsession” (“Only You Can Rock Me”, “Cherry”) , the best songs of “No Place To Run” (“Lettin’ Go”, “No Place To Run” and the magnificent Elvis Presley-cover of “Mystery Train”) as well as the breathtaking encore “Rock Bottom” and “Doctor Doctor” which to this date were the biggest hits of UFO so far.
Not only for fans, this concert remains a stunning document of the power and perfection of one of the greatest Hardrockbands that have ever existed.

I found UFO in 1977, as a girl of 15 who loved guitar-based rock. I adored every era of the band, and in 2008 my husband and I found ourselves sipping wine with them on their tour bus. It was a long, wonderful ride with this band, and I am sorry that we have lost Pete Way, Paul Chapman, and Paul Raymond. I wish Phil Mogg good health following his heart attack, and thank all of the band members for an amazing 50 years of rock with the best band ever. God bless!

I first saw them on this tour in 1980. A few years later they lived in Birmingham and hung out in the rock bars for a while. Moggy didn't make much sense at time, I think he was just a little bit drunk, bless him. Good times.

I discovered UFO in 2011 it was one of those rock bands that feel through the cracks with what I was listening to in the mid Seventies through to the late nineties, I've now got all their albums which have Michael Schenker on lead guitar what a powerhouse rock band UFO is , I'm still listening to them at 64 . RIP Pete Way.

I've been listening to and loving this band since 1970 and am still excited to this day. For me, UFO are one of the best live bands in the world. Your music accompanied me when I was 12 or 13 years old. At that time I started recording their wonderful music on Tesla 4 track reel to reel tape machine using a portable radio. I come from Thuringia. Unfortunately, we had no way of getting the band's vinyl albums at the time. I was very happy to get some of the band's songs on tape every now and then. I also really like the band's first albums. This made me a big fan of this band to this day. I especially love Phil Mogg's voice and songwriting! It 's very nice to find this concert here. Thank you! No need to compare one great guitar 🎸🔥 player with another. Michael Schenker is an unsurpassed iconic axeman. But, Paul 'Tonka' Chapman is also a great six stringer in his own right. After the departure of M. Schenker, Paul Chapman did a good job as filling the shoes of MS in a veteran Heavy Rock band like UFO.

The best part about Chapman was his BC Rich guitar . He wrote a few decent tunes and his playing on Mystery Train is decent but that’s as far as it goes . Zero stage presence , horrendous vibrato and a thin tone . That being said , I do enjoy listening to the post Schenker albums .

Apart from Lights Out live on SITN which will never be surpassed, Long Gone is my favourite UFO track. For me it is one of the best written lyrics ever and I recall singing it to myself so often that close workmates at the time mimicked me. I love the Schenker stuff but some of the lyrics were a bit throwaway but from Obsessions onwards Moggy really upped the ante. My only minor criticism as a fan who saw them many times right up until the end is that I often wished they would play more from the album of the day and less from their SITN mainstay which never quite sounded the same post Schenker. I did see them in Camden in the early nineties when they played a set which featured among others Long Gone, Blinded By A Lie and No Place To Run. Fyi there is a great version of Long Gone on KZbin which I think has Laurence Archer on lead guitar and a very old 1920s or 30s film of women in swimwear accompanying it.

Discovered them as a 14 yr old when No Place to Run was released in Jan 1980, now almost 59, have seen all the great bands of the past 40/50 yrs live. UFO to me will ALWAYS be the BEST Hard Rock Band of all time.

They knew how to mike up a gig back in the day, unlike many of the rock gigs I have gone to in recent years where the sound levels are so ridiculously high and unbalanced it all just sounds like ill defined mush.

@@ianinvancouverbc In my experience it is just the ridiculous volume levels. These so called sound engineers must equate volume with excitement, or maybe they just think a well balanced mix is for wimps? The human ear simply can’t cope with excessive sound pressure levels and I wish these sound fools would understand this.

I am immersed in this video because I really like the Paul Chapman era. Of course I love the songs written by Michael Schenker, but I am reminded again of how great the songs from Paul's era are! Plus, how cool is it to see him playing the guitar?

Thank you for uploading. Being charitable, I'd say the weakness of the vocal performance suggests the end of a long tour, but the clumsiness of transitions, and caliber of most of the solos suggest an earlier under rehearsed stop on the tour. Hmmm. Fun anyway :)
