This is how I remember Steve Yzerman, people always forget what an offensive monster he was.

This is my favorite Stevie Y too. He became the well-rounded two-way player later in his career when his body started to break down…and the Stanley Cups followed. But I LOVE the ‘84-‘93 Yzerman when he was scoring 50-60 goals and 100-150 points. He was a human highlight reel putting on a show night after night!

RIP Dave Strader. Growing up in the 80's as a kid, him and Mickey were the storytellers for those red wings teams. Such good memories

Adam Oates is another Red Wing in the 80's people totally forgot he played in Detroit. After getting dealt from Detroit to St. Louis and onwards Adam Oates's NHL career really took off as an elite Superstar and one of the best premier NHL playmakers.

65-90-155 and being 3rd I'm NHL scoring. The 80's were such a free wheeling, fun time for offense in the game.

We all remember the often replayed "own the zone" goals against Philly & Chicago, but I'm so glad you included the absolutely ridiculous "reverse" spin-o-rama against Brad Marsh & the Leafs at 1:30. I've never forgotten it since the day I saw it happen on TV. Many players have done regular spin-o-ramas in which they spin the puck AWAY from the opposing player, but this is the only time I've ever seen a player spin it TOWARD the opposition. The smoothness with which he pulled it off, leaving not just Marsh in the dust but also causing the Leafs forward covering the middle of the ice to almost fall when trying to recover is almost unbelievable, especially considering Yzerman no longer had an anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, having opted to avoid attempted surgical repair and instead focused on strengthening the muscles, ligaments, and tendons around the missing ligament to compensate for its absence. I guess it worked. An unforgettable play by far and away my favorite player of all time, and the reason I've never worn any another number but #19 in 32 years of playing hockey.

Yzerman is a serious consideration for the greatest player ever….lets not forget he changed his entire style to win championships….he could easily be number 2 all time in scoring if he didn’t and he was much grittier than most superstars. He was always my favorite. Had a lot of tools.

It just makes no sense to me how people can just list off a top 10 list and include Crosby or Forsberg and fail to mention Yzerman. I mean a lot of people think Crosby is better than him. Prisoner of the moment type of mentality I guess... there is only one steve Yzerman.

Yzerman is one of the best ever. Crosby and Forsberg are great, but Yzerman is one of those iconic players that should be mentioned with the likes of Gretzky, Lemeiux, Howe, etc. He was simply a perfect player, especially in the later half of his career with the defensive ability. I was luck to witness his entire career here in Michigan. We have been spoiled as Hockey fans.

helmedon totally agree. Ya Crosby is great but I feel like people tend to ignore and push aside hockey before the year 2000. I sound bias that Stevie is in my top 10 but I feel like that’s the truth. Probably the best captain in history if not top 3 captain

Nathan McDougall I didn’t say forsberg lol but other people say that since his points per game is top 5 all time I think. Ya scoring is lower but Yzerman played until what? 2006? Stats aren’t everything and all

He hasn't put up near the numbers Yzerman did, and Yzerman did it playing on crappy teams when hacking and holding was allowed more. He had to have enforcers to keep him alive. Crosby has scored 50 goals once and broke 100 points 5 times. Yzerman scored 50 or more 5 times, 4 years in a row including 65, 62 and 58. He also put up more than 100 points 6 years in a row including 155, 137 and 127. He also had 90, 89, 87, 85, 95 and 82 point seasons. Since 1999 he was basically playing on one leg and in 1993 he was forced to play more defensively by Bowman, becoming one of the best 2 way forwards in the history of the league. He's 2nd to Gordie Howe in every offensive category for the Wings except assists, where he has more. Many of the awards Crosby won weren't even around when Yzerman played, or at least not until the end of his career. Rocket Richard Mark Messier Leadership Award, after Yzerman retired. Prince of Wales trophy is a team award for reaching the finals. Yzerman was the 1st 18 year old selected to the All Star roster, total of 10 times. First team All Star Lester B. Pearson Award Conn Smythe Trophy Frank J. Selke Trophy Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy Lester Patrick Trophy 3 Stanley Cups as a player, one as a GM President's Trophy (94-94, 95-96, 01-02, 03-04, 05-06) Clarence S. Campbell Bowl (94-95, 96-97, 97-98, 01-02, Order of Hockey in Canada General Manager of the Year Sixth in NHL history in points, ninth in goals and seventh in assists. Canadian Sports Hall of Fame Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Hockey Hall of Fame IIHF Hall of Fame Crosby is no doubt a great player, but he's not nearly as well respected as Yzerman was, is, and I think gets a lot of attention due to the hype surrounding his draft status as "The Next One", which he isn't even close to fulfilling. In their prime I would take Yzerman over Crosby every time. Much like Mario, I would love to have seen what he could accomplish if he were healthy his whole career. He only played what could be considered a "full season" 14 times. 2 saesons of no more than 64, 4 seasons of no more than 58, 1 season of less than 50 and one season of only 16. 15 seasons of 20 goals or more. 11 season of 30 or more goals. Of course, more my personal opinion and yes, the eras played are different, but I would argue that it was tougher to play in Yzerman's era as a skilled, small forward and the talent was not as spread out among so many teams.

Another cool thing about the play at 1:30 is that after the insane move, he made a great pass to future 50 goal scorer (with the Rangers) Adam Graves who scored what might even have been his first NHL goal.
