Check out this Arctic Field Ration from Norway - US MRE Pizza
is one of the main components of this Lightweight Cold Weather MRE. The Norwegian Armed Forces adopted the US Bridgeford MRE Pizza - the prototypes originated from Natick Food Labs as far back as 1988 and has still not been adopted by the US Government. It has even been removed from the projected 2018 menus for the MRE. So this is a very rare and exclusive look into the only place you can find it: in Norwegian Arctic Field Rations.
Norway currently produces one of the most advanced and enjoyable Military Rations in the world.
Hope you like the video!

Another person commented this but I would like to repeat it. Thank you Steve for sharing your time and spending your money to produce these time capsules. You deserve all success that comes your way. Judging by the calloused hands you work for your living, and despite life's ups and downs, you are always happy and upbeat in your videos. It's infectious and theraputic, all while presenting a look back in time and documenting for posterity armed forces meals and survival kits. I personally am having a hard time in my life right now, and your videos are a soothing escape for me and I thank you!

haha thanks! Also I just noticed in the recommended videos a CBS story about new MREs for Troops and one of them was Pizza and it looks almost the same as in this video! Maybe they just tested it with some troops and it got denied? The 2nd half of the video is all about MRE Pizza. Video is from 2015. Video is titled "Pentagon cooks up new MRE kits for U.S. troops" if you want to watch it

Hey good eye! That video was so exciting when it first came out - I saw it about 2 years ago or so and thought for sure it would end up on the 2018 MRE menu lineup. But alas, it was postponed.. I am guessing it will be from start to finish maybe 30 years before the US govt ever officially adopts that thing for the menu lineup.
@shanetheclassic
@shanetheclassic 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! Its a shame it wasn't adopted, the troops in the video seemed to like it..maybe the producers of the pizza they know something we don't...thanks again for the response!

For sure man! You know, those pizzas turn pretty dark brown when stored at 100 degrees F. for 6 months - the appearance is disturbing for some I suppose. It isn't much of a morale boost when it no longer looks like pizza - but the nutritional value remains almost the same so it was merely cosmetic. Nearly 3 decades of research & in the end it is still canned for now because of simple appearance. Pretty neat, huh?

Not surprised you liked the toddy from Freia. Everything Freia makes is incredible. They are an oldschool chocolate company in Norway. Imo regular Freia milk chocolate is the best milk chocolate in the world. Better than swiss and belgian. Not even overexaggurating. I've had foreigners try it, and they usually respond in shock by how good it is.

binkymagnus this is just the dinner, it's a three-pack daily kit. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast and lunch are somewhat smaller, but each pack contains those extra things (energy bars, chocolates, energy drinks etc). I survived just fine for three years on these things in the field. We usually threw out a lot of the stuff we knew we weren't gonna eat (I don't drink coffee and the chocolate bar sucked) to save weight.

binkymagnus true , when I was up in Alaska and went through arctic survival school. I had to maintain about 5200-5500 calories a day. I have a high body emotionalism with a normal temp of 101, eating snow rabbits, hell even tree bark, pin comb nuts etc. Water was no problem with 15 foot deep snow all around you. But you never just eat snow, drops you core temp too fast always boil it. I was lucky I found a frozen lake and cut a hole and got 5-6 lake trout per day. funny I gained 5-10 pounds the two weeks we where training, when most where losing about the same. hehehe :)

Both as a norwegian and also a former norwegian soldier I have some experiences with this. That toddy you drink is very popular amongst civvies too, they love to spice it up with vodka during wintertime. The dishes I have never eaten, I had others and they are nice. The bars is also nice. The toddy is often switched with chocolat drinks. But most people would heat the pizza in a pack like this. I dont know why you did eat it cold, but its like getting old bread and cheese and not making toasts of it. In a rush I would eat everything the way it is, even the drink powder and soup powder, just get it in with water and keep marching. But if you get the time to prepare it then do it, will boost your moral.

Some times you get a "Atlantic wolffish stew" as the main course. And before you add water, it got a strong(!) fish smell. Some people pass it up because of that. I know, because I ate alot of those while serving up north! ;)

Dear lord I am laughing, and in a good way. I used to work as a chef, and this guy is talking about this food like it was gourmet. I LOVE it! If there are any Norwegians watching this, please send him some of that tea, if no one does, I'll look for it next time I am in Norway. I am VERY sure that everything you just drank have NEVER seen real fruit, maybe if it passed a pile of fruits on some table, but beyond that, not chance in hell. It also surprises me like hell, that they didn't go with cloudberries, dried fish and sheep for the arctic ration, or maybe even used some moose, as it has a MUCH higher protein content than beef or chicken.

The spoon is usually not included, think they include it mostly for foregin troops on NATO exercizes. Norwegian troops have A fork, knife and spoon kit. Some bring their own Sporks do reduce weight. But they all have their own eating tools. They are cleaned with water, or the alcohol wipes in the ration....

On a side note, at least when I grew up, the blackcurrant toddy was the obligatory hot toddy you had for cottage or skiing trips and that sort of thing, very standard on camping. Its inclusion in the arctic MRE is not very surprising at all. And yes, it's pretty nice. :) Almost surprising there was no 'kvikk lunsj', the equally classic camping chocolate.

Hi, the toddy that you liked should`t be that hard to import to US, its sold in literary every grocery store in Norway and I agree its delicious. You have no idea how good that tastes after 5-6 hours on a observation post when you are on exercise in late autumn/winter or if you have been outside shovelled snow for a couple of hours. Nice video btw :)

You should try some of the swiss stuff. We do not have a 24h MRE or complete meals, but we've got individual parts. We have some good crackers, chocolate with caffeine and cornflakes and chili con carne, also known as chili johny. We get most of our food and drinks directly from a kitchen though and if we don't get that we just eat snacks (granola bars, nuts and chocolate, fruits or whatever is available).
