In regards to that main entrée you heated up, you should have added about a half a cup of dry red wine, some diced shallots and some fresh herbs, then simmered it slowly for about another 40 years or so. Bon Appétit !

Next time when melting chocolate, it is best to basically boil water in a pot then put a bowl on top of the pot and put the chocolate in the bowl. edit: Glass works best, just make sure it can withstand the heat, obviously don't use a plastic bowl.

Russian roulette with botulism and rancid fats instead of bullets. But I'm confident you've done your due diligence - heard you talk about the "hiss"many times, bulged cans, wearing gloves and a mask, so I think (and hope) you'll be okay. Very much enjoy watching you open fossilized MREs and other emergency rations. To your health!

the stamp on the bottom of the can indicates where this ration came from, the liner SS United States. it was likely auctioned off in 1984 as an auction was held in that year, selling off her remaining fixtures and fittings. this probably came from from a liferaft on the SS United States, a cruise liner built with a still classified hull design and heavily subsidised by the US government. she was built ostensibly as a cruise liner, but was built for easy conversion into a troopship or hosptial ship, capable of carrying 15,000 troops. she could manage 35 knots and could keep that up for 10,000 miles before needing to be reoiled. she had four of the most powerful steam turbines ever made for a merchant ship, each generating 60,000 shaft horse power. she was of very light tonnage for her size, due to most of her superstructure being made of aluminium. she is docked in philadelphia, PA, still afloat, but in a very dilapidated state awaiting to be towed away to be cut up for scrap. the reduction in demand for luxurious transoceanic liners during the jet age being the sounding of her death knell...

Holy Shit! This was a souvenir from the U.S.S. United States?! WOW what a unique specimen. It was the first built, and subsequently now only surviving prototype of early cruise ships engineered and built to serve as one of the first US luxury liners after world war 2 and it was capable of being fully converted into a troop carrying warship literally within a few days if the order were given. Her dying hull is currently sitting somewhere in pennsylvania's waterways. This was very likely one of thousands of MRE's like it kept on that ship at all times in the keel storage in the event the ship needed to be quickly switched to wartime mode and as such could allow docking and loading of troops virtually with no turn over time needed. It was also for its time one of the fastest ships of its size ever built. It was an absolutely fascinating ship and so was it's history. Around 1970 or so is when the ship was decommisioned for its wartime usefullness and became a straight forward cruiseliner, as such the MRE's were likely given away as sovenigers just like this one until the reserves were spent. You may very well have one of the last surviving examples! cherish it.

@antaine19166 жыл бұрын
next time you encounter something like that, boil it in a pot full of water, but put it in either a seal-a-meal bag or a Ziploc freezer bag before you put it in the water.
@Your-Least-Favorite-Stranger5 жыл бұрын
Skip boiling plastic bags, unless they're commercial food-grade ones specifically for boiling you leech toxic stuff into the food. Won't kill you then and there most likely but it's carcinogenic, no need to give yourself higher risk of cancer
