ANZAC= Australian/ New Zealand Corps, it was the force that they sent to fight with the British on the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. The ANZAC cookie was made of oats and honey, they will outlast humanity if they were made right. PS, we are Australians, we just boil the cans in the canteen. The fact that it was almost all rancid is the reason why we went to MRE style rations.

*facepalm* no dude, the main reason so many prisoners were to sent to Australia was because of the overpopulation of England and lack of work and jobs. When i was younger in school, they told us a story about this man who was a chimney sweeper who was sent to prison and then Australia for stealing a loaf of bread to feed himself. Once he was in Australia he worked for an amount of time and after it, he was given a full pardon. He then built a house, got a wife, kids and blah blah blah, lived happily ever after.

My stepdad was in the Australian Army Reserve in the late 80s and early 90s. We had remnants of these early CR1Ms around the house for a good long while after he left the Reserve. The rations back then could be heated because they were usually issued with a separately-packaged hexamine stove: the hinged metal-cage variety with up to 16 square or rounded hexamine fuel tablets per stove.
@nathanpleli57808 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve. I used to eat them when i was an Australian army cadet back in the early 2000's. We used the 2000 types and the retort pouch types ( we called them boiler pouches/ packs) Any questions on the CR1Ms or how we cooked / used them or the F.R.E.D. just ask. They usually go bad after 6-8 years. But the chocolate will be ok to eat even when it looks like that. The colored squares are just for quality control in packaging.

The beef tortillini was the pick of the 5 rat packs available at the time I was in the adf. The interest 2 hours later was a bitch but some quick ease fixed that. The chocolate was generally in the state you found it even if the package wasn't holed, you could use the powder to make a chocolate drink with the condensed milk. After 3 or 4 days your stomach had shrunk to the point that 1 pack would last the day. I used to trade the sugar and stuff I didn't like for savory stuff like cheese or the breakfast tin or real toilet paper. Never had a rancid biscuit in 23 years, don't make it known or everyone will want one....... I have had the pleasure of being resupplied with 30 year old 10 man ration packs packed during the Vietnam war. Two choices, dog food type 1 and dog food type 2 and hard biscuits, cheese and chocolate. Strangely most of the contents had survived. As crocodile Dundee once said, "Tastes like shit, but you can live on it". cheers BTW have you figured out the rest of the worlds date system and what ANZAC means yet?

@alexanderryan94568 жыл бұрын
Yes, m&m's are made here in Australia. And even for american products imported here, they would still need the correct best before date if being sold here in Australia.

why resort too name calling the facts speak for themselves.... for you too allow the opinion of another person too get you so riled up just boggles my mind ... having said that you do have the right too think what you want but name calling seems so childish ... that is my opinion

I've never seen those dollar sweets packaged as that. They look like fruit tingles. Scotch fingers are very nice, when they're not rancid and vegemite is awesome. Nestle chocolate isn't as nice as Cadbury, but I'd assume nestle has a contract with a few of their products. It's funny hearing 2000 as vintage, too.

Ha! Massive flashbacks watching this, after consuming a few of them during my time in the ADF in the '90's. My memories are the contents of these "rat packs" evolved through the decade, with less popular items like the "survival biscuits" being swapped out for basically standard store items like this pack contained. Obviously reduced shelf life, but made the packs more palatable at the time. I always thought the "D" menu was the best. You're right about the quantity of food in them. I would never get through it all. If I was out on exercise for a week, I'd always come home with one unopened and a heap of miscellaneous uneaten items. I'm so sad that the cheese was bad. That was always my favourite item, and every menu had it. I mean, where else would you find a ridiculous tiny processed cheese in a can!? Survival biscuit/cracker + vegemite + cheese was the perfect lunch on the go. Suck on the tube of condensed milk for dessert. Not sure why they put a best before on Vegemite. Half life might be more appropriate. Thanks for posting. Yeah, I know this is a near 7 year old upload and no one will read this comment, but thanks anyway for the nostalgia trip! 😁

As an Australian, it's quite refreshing to see an American tasting Vegemite and not be revolted by it heh. But after that processed cheese, anything would taste great!
@MattExzy9 жыл бұрын
+Steve1989 MREinfo Awesome stuff.. and that's just how it's exactly meant to be eaten. It's definitely an acquired taste for many, but I'm pretty happy to see an American that likes it! But man, there's so much sweet stuff in this pack, I get that it's meant to be for energy, but I think I'd be thirsty pretty quick if there wasn't much water around.
@qwareverse8 жыл бұрын
I dont mind Vegemite and Marmite, but i dont get why so many people are totally revolted by it! Its almost like they exaggerate the taste to get attention. Sure i get why some dont care for it as it is pretty salty, but come on its not THAT bad seriously.

I mean, considering everything else he eats, I don't think real food is a problem for Steve, here. Vegemite? Psh, child's play! Haggis? No problem. Surströmming? Hah! You trying to fatten me up? Stinky Tofu. Okay, uh, that's not food, but I've still eaten worse before.

Ah the memories. :) The sweetened condensed milk goes in the coffee and hot chocolate. The sugar goes with the tea (no milk for me) and the Scotch buscuits. The vegemite goes with the canned cheese on the crackers. The main meal cans you bash a dent into the can on the heel of your boot, then toss the can into the campfire. When the dent pops out, it's ready - rake it out of the fire and (holding it with your bush hat) open it up. Point it away from yourself when you pierce the can and work quickly before it explodes. :) The candies and jam biscuits go in the pockets for the march. The chocolate is before you go to sleep.

Yeeaaahhh buddy!! Them eucalyptus leaves!! Hahaha great video. Actually strange because the M&Ms expired 1 day after I turned 2 and I study at Chatswood. Didn't know they had a chocolate factory there..funny because its so close to home. Keep it up Steve. -Steve

Yo and the ANZAC bar. Anzac biscuits were around since WW1 baked by the wives and mothers of soldiers. They did not have eggs in them and thus they did not spoil on the way while being delivered in the care packages. Anzac biscuits are made from oatmeal, dessicated coconut, golden syrup and some other bits that I can't remember. They are an important part of Australian culture because they represented our troops in Gallipoli. Great that you enjoyed them. But the lack of eggs are probably why they didn't go rancid.

Anzac Biscuits are dope. If you ever get them, and they dont feel as fresh, microwave them for like 40 seconds, grabs some milk and its heaven.

Interesting to see this Steve. I just found a case with 4 of these from 2003-2004. Looks like at least 2 have leakage from the pouches, but will have to open them up and see what might be salvageable. At least I’ll get some FREDs!

I'm amazed I don't see instant ramen more often in rations. I've been eating the stuff since I was a kid, still love it.
@excessemail23442 жыл бұрын
I was going to say, because it always leaves you hungry, but as Steve says, if you are actively out on maneuvers or whatever you sould eat basically all of it, so that wouldn't be a downside. Maybe it's the need for hot water? Or because other than the sodium ramen noodles are nutritionally valueless?

Apparently, the little coloured squares of paper were used for quality control, to know who was packing it. The pack instructions suggested using them for markers when making mud maps.

I don't think moisture got into the drinking powders, just the anticaking agent broke down and it clumped up.

Hope you're doing ok after that science experiment Steve, they were issuing these rations to us recruits back in 2004. Mine was a year past its used by date and it was gnarly even back then. At least the M&Ms were good and the dollar store lifesavers, I'd trade a meal can for the M&Ms and just mong on them for the week I was out in the field. Anyways cheers for the trip down memory lane.
