Wow! As a former Aussie soldier of the Vietnam years I am impressed with both the quantity and quality of these rations. The 24 hr ratpacks we carried were based on tinned concoctions which were not exactly gourmet stuff. Small tins of corned beef or mutton with the texture of meat flavored tow rope and Vienna sausages that squeaked as they were being eaten and hard crackers. Very few "extras" and only packets of "Happy Aid" sent from home made drinking water palatable. We had similar ration chocolate, but dropped into a canteen cup of boiling water turned it into a passable hot chocolate drink. I may see if I can reenlist in order to enjoy such gourmet food. No doubt, I'll be excused basic training, as my skills from 50 years ago should still be current!

From personal experiences (from 1994 to 2011) ration packs had major improvements. Still, after a few days they all clog you up. Love the way he separated them for breakfast lunch and dinner. Personally didn't really have the time to "enjoy" just get something into your gut as quick as possible lol. Most of the time you would only have time to boil water. Eat the main meals cold and not on a plate straight out of the package. The way he ate the Vegemite was how I and many soldiers would eat it, for the same reasons he mentioned. ADF rations don't come with self heating devices so a small stove and heximine tablets would be issued as well. Hence the reason why many times you either don't have time to heat them up or for tactical reasons you just couldn't so all meals were designed to eat cold. I used to make "bush twisties" with the noodles just crush them in the package sprinkle some flavours on them and crunch them down lol. Atleast ration packs gave me an appreciation of "real food"😜
@TheMichaelStott3 жыл бұрын
@M G There was fibre. Each ration pack contained enough protein, fibre, carbs etc for a person to sustain themselves for 24 hours. Ration packs and meals were designed for the body to absorb as much as it could, this meant there was a little "clogging" of the system. It takes between 24 and 72 hours for your body to digest and get rid of a meal. You hardly notice if you're eating everyday. Yes, taking a poo can be a risk. But pretty much everything is a risk in an area of operations🙂 also, when you're stressed or your body isn't getting those 3 square meals, it slows down digestion. Thus ration packs need to be filled with all the goodness a body can absorb.

Hi Steve, I really enjoyed watching your videos showcasing so many different kinds of MRE. Just wanted to point out at 26:40 when you prepared the noodle (mi goreng) the method is actually fine (it is totally not wrong at all because sometimes when you want noodle soup that's how you're gonna cook it anyway, and will taste equally as good), but originally what we do with it is to cook the noodle in the hot/boiling water for 3 minutes just how you would normally do with any instant noodle, but instead of pouring all of the flavouring packets right into the soup, you can try draining the water first, so that only the noodles left inside your container, then you empty all the packets and flavouring and give it a really good mix and stir, it is more like spaghetti/pasta than a noodle soup, for Asian we call it "dry noodle" or for Indonesian the word "mi goreng" actually means fried noodle. Of course essentially it is not fried noodle since we don't actually fry it, but it is the closest thing to an authentic Indonesian fried noodle, hence the name the instant noodle as 'mi goreng'. I knew that because it says 'mi goreng' and it is similar to the Indonesian version of 'Indomie Mi Goreng' which we can find locally in Australia as well in Asian stores, and I always eat like 2 packets at once for a meal + a fried egg on top. It is very addictive but actually not very healthy kind of food cuz it contains a high amount of MSG. Hahaha... Cheers. www.google.com.au/search?q=indomie+mi+goreng&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiVz53t7tvWAhUKE7wKHcwACh8Q_AUICigB&biw=1366&bih=637

When I was in the Australian Army Cadets, our school would hold an Annual Field Training excercise once a year, and for five of the seven days we were given ration packs that were bought from surplus army stock. I remember always trading for the barbecue beef meal, not because I liked the food itself, but because it had rice with it and I was driving myself inside by day 2 without rice with my food. (I am Korean if you are curious, hence the desire for rice lol)

cheese and vegemite goes on the bread, jam goes in the oatmeal, condensed milk is for the tea and chocolate drink, sugars doubled up in the coffee, and the tuna can be tossed in with either the rice or the noodles depending on which you want with the lamb. In practice though I suspect you just eat as you go since this is a field ration, not meant for sitting in a foxhole.

@@Rodney-fs8kx I was a scout/rifleman with 31 RAR Charlie Company. I really enjoyed my time serving and kind of regret leaving. I joined when I was very young and was still indecisive about my future. I was a crack shot (topped my recruit class) and would often go shooting during the week. I owned an SKK (7.62 mm with 30 round banana mags) a semi automatic assault rifle similar to an AK. Of course when the gun laws came in after Port Arthur I had to turn it in. I joined in 1993 and was part of the last recruit class to train with the old SLR. Shortly later they brought the Steyr in and we had to qualify with those. I also trained with the M60 machine gun and the Bren. I think,they bought in the minimi a bit later. Thank you for your service. Hope you’re doing well.

My dad was in the Australian Army for 36 years, he'd often bring home surplus supplies. I got to experience ratio packs, and from memory they were 6 variations, listed as A to F. This was all the way back in the early 90's, we had to use a hexamine cooker to heat everything up, because all the meals came in cans.

Never realised how much of the Australian CR1M is sourced from New Zealand. ADF & NZDF work closely together, so perhaps not that much of a surprise. I was looking out for which products were made in the DSTO facility at Scottsdale (Tasmania) which I've had the pleasure of visiting and being shown around. If you're looking for a good Australian doco-series on the sorts of survival foods that can be found in the bush, mixed in with some good history, I can thoroughly recommend "Bush Tucker Man" - hosted by an ex-ADF Major who made survival and survival foods part of his career. Despite no MREs being featured, it's superb viewing.
