I was in the Army in 1959 -66. The C-rats we got in '59-61 were dated 1938. We got a full 20 cig pack, and the Lucky Strikes had the green logo which was before the red. The canned chicken was horrible but the Pork & beans were OK. The hard tack couldn't be softened in hot coffee, so putting jam on one was out of the question. The beef stew was pretty good. No utensils, you used yours from your mess kit.

I forgot to mention. In 1973, I went to Basic Training at Ft. Jackson, S.C. Since a few other guys and I arrived a week early, they put us to work cleaning out some old, unused for many years, barracks and some kind of storage room, about 24' x 16', in which we found box upon box of ""MRE"". I'd say there were 12 MRe's to each box. To the best of my recollection, they were at least 20+ yrs. old, so from 1952??... The Sgt. told us to take what we want and trash the rest. I had many of the jelly bars that you showed here, although they seemed brighter in color,.and they tasted similar to the ""Chuckles" jelly candy that used to be popular. Also had hundreds of packs of cigarettes that came 6 or 8 to a pack. I literally had over 100 packs, which I sold during the 1 week "bivouac" training. Guys were willing to pay a premium, as during the bivouac , we had no commissary access. Just a memory that came back after watching the first of your MRE videos...first for me, that is. Your videos are fantastic...thank you!!

I don't know how I stumbled across your channel, but I have a crap load of MREs, so I've been very intrigued with your videos. I've eaten some fairly old stock, but nothing like you have consumed! When I was a kid, my grandmother told me a story about her grandfather who fought during the Civil War for the South. He told her that his unit ran out of food and would go into smoke houses on abandoned farms, dig up the dirt floor and boil the soil, which was coated in fat and drippings from the smoked meats. They would then skim off the fat as their meal.
@BallisticBBQ8 жыл бұрын
They would literally scoop the fat soaked dirt off of the floor of the smoke houses, and boil it. This was verbal history shared with me by my grandmother. I wrote all of this stuff down to pass on to my son etc. Love what you're doing brother. Fun stuff and I dig on how you respect and preserve this history. Much respect!

I Googled the Carr-Consolidated Biscuit Co. of Chicago. The factory burned to the ground in 1955. It made the front page of the Chicago Tribune on Sept. 2, 1955, "22 Hurt in $1,000,000 Fire". Mason, Au and Magenheimer made DOTS candy and a licorice version called Black Crows, among other things. Their factory building in Mineola looks like it's loft apartments now.

I've stumbled into the weird side of KZbin and once again the weird side delivers. I'm already like 10 videos into your videos but I subscribed after the first. Oddly awesome content. Very thorough. I can confidently say that your channel is one of a kind. Keep up the good work!

Izzie Love could be part of the packing process, or it could be discoloration of some of the ingredients.

Mold..Fungus..Don't do anything immediately like a bacteria will do, but fungus keeps on building in our body and later cause cancer, that's what numerous studies have shown. Better to introduce a lemonade or something else in your diet to kill the internal build of fungus. Most of the processed food, especially the old one are lased with high doses of mold (we just don't see them).

Now, im no expert on this kind of stuff, nor anything else of this category, but your videos captivated me in such a way that i cant explain myself. It may be me appreciating that these things are antique;a part of hystory, an era gone but still so recent. You have somehow help found a new niche for youtube.
